Will You Pay for Access to the New Trek Television Series ?

taylor1701dtaylor1701d Member Posts: 3,099 Arc User
Trek is coming back to the small screen, but reading further details, this series will only be available via the CBS streaming service, which charges a monthly fee.
Edit: ($5.99/month)

Will you be willing to pay for access to this program ?
I know I will be, and have never felt the urge to pay for streaming services.

Undecided - a lot depends on how much they charge for it.

    $5.99 a month.

I will try it out for a few months, if I enjoy it, I'll continue the sub.

As I don't live in the US it isn't a question of whether I want to or not, but that I can't.

Sure I'll watch it. If it's into darkness on tv I may stop but otherwise come on 6 bucks a month is $1.50 an episode. That's just 20,000 dilithium.

If it's good, then sure. If not, I'll just wait the week and watch it on normal TV.

First, this topic feels more appropiate in Ten Forward.

Secondly, undecided. Although I am pretty excited for a new Star Trek series, I am not looking forward to having to pay to stream it, especially being European. Now, if there would be a single great streaming service in the Netherlands, I would pay for that. But big streaming services like Netflix are horrible when it comes to the amount of content they offer over here. Right now the only streaming service that is available that offers it all is illegal, and I have a hunch it won't be long until the government is gonna start hunting for users of it. Also, this service is international and has something to do with the snack you eat in theaters.

I'm personally hoping that some of the bigger Dutch television companies manage to get a deal with CBS to include their shows on a separate channel on Dutch television. Right now that is the only way I see myself having access to a new series.

Honestly, Trek belongs on regular TV for everybody to enjoy. The more channels go into separate streaming mode, the more money people will be asked to fork over, the less we will actually be able to afford to see legally. Gotta love the logic there right?

Yeah, suppose so. If they need to move it, by all means. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Agreed, seems a little Un-Trek like to be charging a premium, and to not be worldwide accessible is a real problem. I would have preferred it, if it was available to all, and for free (less the cable package you pay for monthly) but it is what it is for the moment.

If it were any other franchise, I wouldn't even consider it, and I'll be firmly on the fence until I get a feel for whether it's worth it to me. I wouldn't have paid a subscription for VOY or ENT, but I might have for DS9/TNG/TOS.

Another concern is broadcast schedules. You'll get fewer episodes during certain holiday-heavy months, and no episodes at all between seasons. They're out of their minds if they think I'll pay for even one week without new content.

*edit* And what about commercials? Am I expected to pay for the privilege of watching the same repetitive handful of streaming ads I get from Hulu? Forget about it.

I though the announcement I saw mentioned that internationally it would be distributed normally.

re: original question - nope. And not just because of the fee, but also the streaming. I don't really do any streaming services. When I watch TV, it's on a TV. /shrug

I already pay for this service, so it's not a big deal for me. I kind of wish it was airing on regular tv so more people could see it, but for some reason I don't make those decisions.

I already have CBS All Access. Dunno what that counts as. (No?)
We got it for Survivor and Person of Interest.
CBS, Hulu and Netflix are still cheaper than cable in my neck of the woods.

I may be totally wrong on this, but I read the article differently. I read it to mean that CBS will be running this new show on their regular CBS channel, but for those who don't have a regular subscription service, such as myself, they will offer their regular $5.99 pay service that they do for all their shows for their online streaming service... It's not just Star Trek...

I could be completely wrong, but that's how I read it...

Has this been absolutely confirmed that the episodes WILL air on regular TV after a short delay? I am seeing conflicting reports of whether anything but the pilot will ever be on TV.

I'm another British person who won't be watching it by what I have read, although I admit I can't see anyone outside of the US actually watching it since it's on a US internet streaming site.

Another question I have is when are they going to basing it on? I have already done the 22, 23 and 24th centuries and now they have rebooted it into an alternative universe. It says that they are going to new frontiers but it seems that the majority of the galaxy has been mentioned if not actually been shown.

They haven't released much in the way of details, I'm sure we'll get little tidbits here and there as time goes on. But nothing has been revealed, except an "all new cast"....which doesn't really let us know if any returning characters will make appearances.

This is what I heard on my local news broadcast, Pilot will be available on regular TV, but any other episodes will be only available through streaming.

If the episodes will come to regular TV (a week later) well that isn't so bad really. But I don't think that is their plan.
Would be happily mistaken if that is not the case.

They probably will find a way to do it in the pilot and/or special episode for an example a 100th episode if it lasts that long.

No, i plan on pirating(stealing) it. I already pay for cable so that I can have internet access, I am not going to be charged once again to watch a show licensed and produced by corporate conglomerate that is already a nationally broadcast company. It is not going to happen.

Greed on my part? Sure, I will admit that. Greed on their part? Most definitely, think they will admit it? Not effing likely, more no effing way.

Sometimes to defeat evil you have to be a bit evil yourself. CBS can go %&$@ themselves on this one. I will steal it right in front of their face and brag about it to their face, just like they are trying to steal from you right in front of your face but laugh at you behind closed board room doors.

Not going to happen CBS, not even for 5.99 per month, they could charge $.99 a month and I would still steal it, just on principle alone. Greed begets greed.

i really don't think i'll even watch it let alone pay for it. as far as I can tell, no one cares for the original trek values. its to old fashioned and out dated for the new generation of viewers. any new trek series will pretty much be a ISS Enterprise style of show where they just shoot they way out every time. the older message of peace for all isn't going to sell in todays action and explosion world. it will just be a copy of all other shoot em up TV shows. even DS9 and Voyager was more war driven after Roddenberry passed because he didn't want trek to be like that while he was alive. I will only even try to give it a watch if.
1 - it is set in the original trek cannon time line.
    2 - JJ's trek isn't used as cannon.
3 - art work and ship design isn't charged like the new tardis in the dr who series. (sorry if its in bad taste to bring up other sci-fi LOL)
4 - its not set to far onto the future where all the politics have changed dramatically.

Why is it so hard for some people to comprehend the difference between a forum for STO specific discussion and general Trek discussion?

and like ilithyn said alot of fans wont be given the choice who live outside the US which is BS feel bad for those fans for not being given the choice.

imo this series will fall flat due to it being on CBS streaming service which means alot of fans who are not in the US wont be given the chance to watch/Pay to watch.

CBS knows where they can stick this whole idea

Maybe, need more details, id prefer not to.. If i can watch it a week later on tv or something like that ill go ahead and do that, but if if i have to wait till the summer or syndication or someday, then i might. There could be some pirate website i could watch it soon after for free. Im cheap, hate monthly reoccuring bills. I already have netflix which i hear is going up.

To bad my LTS doesnt get me this.

there are bound to be alternative ways to access the show if you live outside the US, depending on your country.
here in the uk probably netflicks, amazon prime and possibly sky go if I'm lucky.

the only alternative is to wait and see if it comes out on a boxset.

thats all very well for most other chat but I feel this news is important enough to make an exception, and I am glat its here as I would never have known otherwise, I only usually read Star Trek Online General Discussion stuff.
