Sunrise comes and the same ole same ole

I played sunrise at first i was liking it alot making first contact was so trek like and then well wouldnt ya know it? the tholians show up and we get to kill them so as usual "We come in peace shoot to kill".

Cryptic you almost had a real gem with sunrise until you added the tholians that mission did not need a token force we get to exterminate, ive given up hope of any real "Exploration" mission it will always be the same ole same ole "we come in peace shoot to kill".

I realy digged that mission up to the point the thols appeared then i was reminded oh yeah cryptic so go to system A kill everything beam to planet B kill more things beam back to ship in system C and kill more things warp out for reward like a god little lab rat.

Captain unknown alien vessel on approach. Shall I open hailing frequencies?
Negative, we need to test out our new antiproton [crtd]x3 [pen] beam arrays. Open fire.

I enjoyed the mission, it actually felt like a Star Trek episode to me.

In most of the episodes (the good ones anyway) there is some form of conflict, some challenge to over come and it almost always has the crew in a position where disaster will occur should they fail. Granted, this conflict isn't always an actual fight against a hostile force, but you have to remember you're in a video game.

There will always be battles in missions, to expect otherwise is setting yourself up for disappointment. What I look for in a good mission is a balance, a combination of story and action and I thought Sunrise delivered on that. Overall, it's personal taste, but I really enjoyed the mission. I'm eagerly anticipating the next part of the story.
    Insert witty signature line here.

I agree the new FE was very interesting before the arrival of Tholians. maybe the tholians could have been smarter, and use subtlety to steal the "thing" (forgotten the name), without fights.

It makes sense, in the context of my main character, a Tac-spec. Why else would the Admiralty send a Battlecruiser, with minimal science capability, captained and crewed by hard-charging combat veterans on a mission to "rediscover our roots as explorers?"

It's like sending Seal Team 6 to study chimpanzees in the wild.

My Engineer is even worse. This is a woman, who has shown through many missions, to be as undiplomatic as possible and for whom orbital bombardment is the first resort, then proceeds with "overkill" progresses to "Kneecaps!" and almost always ends in "strategic ordnance deployment." Followed shortly thereafter by "collateral damage" and "unspecified urban renewal."

Seriously. With the kind of officers that have risen to the ranks through skill, tenacity and replacing casualties, do you really think Picard-style captaining will ever make a comeback?

We can always hope not. Never was the term "ready room" less apt. It was his "starting to consider commencing to analyze beginning to explore the probable options of my possibilities" room.

    I'm torn.

The thing about exploration within a game such as this, well...it's boring. It's sitting in space pressing F and waiting for the game to do stuff around you. I mean look at the missions where you do no combat. Can anyone honestly say they have more fun playing Of Bajor than any other mission with combat in?

We're geared up for combat. We fly in battleships. We're members of each faction's military forces. And it's a space combat game. I am certain that if proper exploration were to ever surface (since it's not in the season, that's a given now) it will be so dull and pointless no-one will play it after the first time.

See, this is why I have characters for everything. So, when a mission would logically require Starfleet to send a science ship, I use my Vesta captain, not my actual main.

I agree... to a point. I felt that the first round of Tholians was appropriate, smack down the boarders and the handful of ships that sent them. Good, this is fairly Trek(TNG would have "driven them off" instead of "vaporize" but hell lets not nitpick). Its when they happen to have a Tarantula led battle-group on standby that I got annoyed. Outside of that though, the writing didn't suck and the mission was rather overall well done.

That pretty much sums up where im at sure the boarding party acceptible but the second force of thols..uneeded they couldve stole the device using subterfuge thier boarders keep us busy while they beam it out and split.

I liked the mission. I was just recently wondering if we'd hear about the
Tox Uthat again. We never knew was it was

One has to wonder what the Tholians are doing with it. If it's a "star destroyer" weapon, is that something they intend to use against the Mirror Terrans?

One of the things I liked about the writing is that my character wasn't acting stupid and naive. I initially found Kal Dano's "timely arrival" very suspicious and was glad that I had the option to have my character act accordingly.
I also had a laugh at the "I've had about enough of that recently"-line concerning changing the timeline.

Come on...we didn't go in looking for fights. It's not our fault the Tholians were being suicidal once again.

I thought the computer-generated message the tholians made was pretty funny. "GIVE US THE THOX UTAT OR YOU WILL BE DESTROYED!" using that splendidly calm, female voice. It had me laughing a little. It reminded me of the voice you hear in Portal when you're taking the elevator down into the incinerator and it's still promising you cake.

Or in keeping with the theme started on Kal Dano's ship, it also was a bit reminiscent of a less angry, less British Dalek. ;)

Well, sure, that isn't the point though. It would be nice to have seen a mission where diplomacy prevails for a change instead of warp in pew pew.

you mean like you warp in find a newish race, talk to em, help the, ask them to join in a the wonderful bonds of friendship? :P

While I think it's a valid point that it would be nice to have more options where we get full XP for disabling rather than blowing up an opponent...I can't say I feel too badly considering that at the least, the Tholians were interfering with my attempt to stop a genocide. Whether or not they perpetrated the genocide, I do think there's an argument that there was no time left for diplomacy. Now if we encounter them again without an entire species on a short countdown clock to extinction...I think a disable/discuss/interrogate option could be useful (with the tone of it varying some by faction).

This episode was confusing as hell if you were a KDF player....

"Hey we need planets to conquer for resources, now refit your ship for exploration and find out why this star is dying.... Also pick up a Cardassian chick from DS9"

Do mission..... NEVER collect a single resource even though there was ample opportunity to just TAKE.....
