New Episode: Sunrise

The heavy, stuffed chair squeaked as Admiral Quinn leaned back. Ever since the rebuilding of Earth Spacedock, his chair had squeaked, and there was never enough engineering time to deal with it. The engineers were always busy doing other things, like keeping the station from coming apart when the inertial dampers went offline.

I think maybe Quinn needs to reframe the question. He's got a false dichotomy here, one that's existed throughout Trek. I think I would tell these cadets that their skills and readiness are valuable and will help provide the strength and rapid responsiveness needed to allow them to do their other mission--science and "humanitarian"--in peace. The are explorers but NOT pushovers, and that is a good thing. I would merely ask them to balance the two and judge each situation individually, rather than make the mistake of devaluing their training and acting like it was for naught or treating them like brainless, second-class misfits for knowing how to defend themselves.

I might also institute a cross-training program with Romulan Republic and Cardassian Defense Forces, given that some of these graduates might actually be in a particularly good position to relate to their counterparts in these services, who manage unlike the Klingon stereotype to be a military first WITHOUT resorting to brutish belligerence or conquest for the heck of it. This would further show the graduates that they are valued instead of worthless throwaways.

All that I got from this was that we're probably going to pick up a group of cadets (or graduates). Take them to a star near Ferenginar that's dying because of "Tzenkethi" probes. And we'll be shooting and killing space dragons, thus completely going against what we're supposed to be teaching the cadets/graduates.

Although I appreciate these little articles (a little... appreciation), I'm always left wondering how many immortal bugs can be fixed and how much more playable this game could be if STO team adjusted their focus from satisfying whiners and roleplayers towards dealing with real issues in the game.

Different teams handle different things, just FYI. Whatever team is in charge of coming up with with the news and events isn't the same as the team handling art assets. And those handling art assets do not handle bugs and other issues outside of art asset-related issues like uniform clipping.

The simple fact of the matter is that Cryptic uses a poorly optimized engine that's mutated into a horrible monstrosity (their own words) and doesn't have a team large enough to fully fix everything.

All this technology and we still have to deal with squeaky chairs?

    Some future. [/needeyerollemot]

Well excuse me for having enormous flaws that I don't work on.

Yup, WD40 and Duct tape. The only 2 things you need to fix everything.

Enjoyable read. Kudos to the writer. However, there is a little wrinkle in the whole thing... It doesn't tell me anything about the new episode

We need a little more Linnea interaction in game, she seems like a lot of fun. Also be good to find out how the heck this particular Ocampa made it to the Alpha Quadrant before we cracked open the paths to two Dyson Spheres. And did she take four years in the Academy or was she accelerated too?

I'm fairly certain that's a joke related to the fact that Berengaria VII actually has real dragons a hundred meters long.

The probes in Tzenkethi space are unknown and not near Ferenginar.

The star near Ferenginar may be dying due to unknown circumstances since a star dying isn't big news unless it's going to supernova and burst gamma rays over a nearby planet in a few years.

Hey, when you reinvent the wheel call me. Considering what Spacedock looked like at the end of Midnight, Quinn's lucky he still has a chair. My captain is an engineer, he'd fix the damn chair himself. Maybe that should be a DOFF assignment in spacedock, Fix Quinn's chair.

The team should definitely add that squeaking sound.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

    Haha, that would be funny.

As to that DOFF assignment, let's call it a very rare assignment and it also upgrades the quality of the assigned DOFF when it crits. Perks of schmoozing with CINC-Starfleet. ;)

Security would probably lose Linnea like they did with Sela.

So much negativity in this thread saddens me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, but I believe we all missed something far more important than Quinns' squeaky chair...

The chair bit is fun, but i don't see how this short story relates to the new episode.. unless WE are the repair crews on ESD.

I know, I'm just making a speculative joke about what the episode will be, since they completely neglect to mention anything about it. Though, given that the episode's name is "Sunrise", I'll probably have to go with the dying star. Though, if any part of my joke turns out to be true, I claim the right of "called it".

Maybe the spot we find him on ESD is not his office, more like the Admiral/Station equivalent of a bridge?

Or the door is invisible and untouchable.

Yeah, this I would be interested too . But they are the nice two , 300 -year-old symbiont and 3-years-old Ocampa governing the Starfleet.

I always wondered what kind of personality Linnea has  From what I've seen in the article, Quinn has a lot to thank her - for keeping his blood pressure down ^^

"reports of unknown probes in Tzenkethi space"

Mmm so we'll get to tangle with the Tzenkethi at some point? Have their xenophobic stance towards Federation changed by 2410 at all? Maybe figuring out where these probes come from could break the ice betwen the Fed and the Tzen'.

It's great to see that Quinn sees the issue. I wonder if we'll see commanding officers who had no choice but to sit in The Chair, even if they weren't ready for it (yet). Resolving conflicts created by a few of these "green captains" would put an interesting spin on the "lets-get-back-to-exploration" thing imo

I thought I was being funny when I posted the Marine Engineering Flowchart, not negative... :/

But I do find myself wondering now, has Quinn got more than one office? Which is not entirely out of the question, but I do wonder. ;)

This new Featured Episode feels like a Star Trek Bridge Commander Mission Arc, since there's 'Probes' messing with a Sun, feels like a Sun Flare Device to me...
The Rising of the Delta is the best expansion ever, and people love it to death because it is a good day to die in the endless struggle for supremacy of your own conviction. (A spin off of the Delta Rising is the best expansion ever and all the players love it.)
