Ferengi are one of the worst things that Star Trek ever came up with.
While I think this is a bit of an overstatement, the way they were supposed to become the next big bad guy was pretty... ehm... unconvincing.
Add to that that we have a German expression "Arsch mit Ohren" (literally "TRIBBLE with ears" - if the first word gets censored, it's a three-letter term you use for your buttocks) to refer to really unlikeable people, their case was a lost one on this market.
My mother was an epohh and my father smelled of tulaberries
If Klingons can be Feds, and Rommies can be either KDF or Fed, why don't Ferengi get to live up to their full potential and seek profit in all possible markets?
Frankly, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a Ferengi who was handling banking, and investments for the Tholians!
Qonos has Ferengi NPCs! Why not a PC?
Qapla.
Uhh... trading with everyone is one thing, but joining other empire's military? Do you really see a ship full of Klingons simply take orders from a Ferengi captain without his second challenging him as soon as he sets foot on the ship?
Ferengi joining Starfleet is canonic, but we've never seen a Ferengi serve (much less command) another empire's ship.

I'm sure the other races in the KDF would have less issues with it that the Klingons themselves.... heck it's CANON that the Nausicaans are happy to work for Ferengi if they are properly compensated. And Orions? Yeah... They act much the same as Ferengi. Which brings up another point.... If Klingons are willing to work for Orions, who are greedy backstabbers with no honor....

Funny expression...but I thought one of the most frequent complaints about unlikeable people is that they never listen. Makes me wonder where that saying comes from.
