I've been wanting more permanent combat pets so each member of my away team can summon extra help. If the pony can run over to my enemies and repeatedly bite them... I would buy one.

More canon characters liked horses than cats or beagles, so horses are more canon than cats and dogs. And since horses would be too big for the game, ponies would be just the right size.
So everyone gets a pony. If they buy it, of course, but... ponies! Mull on that for a while.
