Would you like to see another ship design contest?

omegasprimeomegasprime Member Posts: 289 Arc User
For those of you who came to the game after Enterprise F was introduced. It was designed by a member of our community as part of a contest to design the new Enterprise.

I an mot saying that the contest has to be about the Enterprise, but just a new design created my a community member to be in the game.

I think this should be as part of the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek.

As a designer, I would love it. But they made it clear after the DTNE Contest that they won't be doing another ship contest. Because there was so much that went wrong.

From my point of view (not a designer), it could be a lot of fun seeing the mess.

Well at least I heard that last time it was a mess. Though I love the Odyssey class.
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix, Toveg, T'vritha, To Vrax: Bring in the Allegiance class.
Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia, Ty'Vris, Tia Vex, Toi'Virth: Add Tier 6 KDF Carrier and Raider.
    Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var, Tevra, T'Vira, To'Vrak: Give us Asylums for Romulans.

Don't make ARC mandatory! Keep it optional only!

I'd rather it be a contest to design a crazy-looking alien/minor race ship though and NOT a main faction ship.

Designing a Kzinti ship? sure... sounds good.
    Betazoid? awesome.
Species 3982? sure why not? :p
Nakuhl even? enh we never saw their ships either.

But as Azurian said the idea was good, but people(read: the players) only followed as much of the rules as they had to.... So it went south, and the idea sank. The devs MIGHT do another, or they might not, probably not.

So they learn from the mistakes and carry on, cause let's face it, of the non- canon ships the oddly is the best looking

I think it would be nice to see one, but like the others said. I'm sure it will turn into a mess. Usually contests like these always end up in a mess.

To the eye of the beholder. To me the Oddy is the worse looking one. The Command Cruisers looks the best.

Yes, I would love to be able to design mine own ship for STO. It doesn't have to be Federation flagship. It could be anything at all, like some new Federation class or some Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian ship...

You must not have been around for the "Design the Next Enterprise" contest. There were multiple accusations of discrimination by Cryptic for making the contest US-only (one of the fan-favorite designs was from a Canadian), not to mention plagiarism (both real and imagined), and then the fan-picked winner was vetoed by CBS in favor of the Odyssey-class, a design that didn't even make the top 20.

Cryptic made it very clear it's never happening again.

Great in concept, but was terrible in execution, for all the above named reasons. The butt-hurt is still strong from the DTNE contest.

No. Because they obviously aren't done reusing the art assets from the T6 battlecruisers for every new T6 ship coming out it.

Also... the DtNE contest rules specifically said that any and all voting was no more binding than an opinion poll

Yes, it did. And people even talked about it. But people wasn't expecting for that clause to actually be put into action. Especially against the majority who wanted Chris Madden's ship to win.

Right there was the main controversy of the DTNE. And why Cryptic said, "Never again".

Yeah, I have no idea why they came to that silly conclusion. I mean really.... it was literally spelled out in black and white....

    this thing?

Never liked it. Looks too much like the Ent-J.

It's simple, the majority liked it and thought that it was a shoe-in for the winner and that Cryptic would never do such a thing. Then when it didn't even get to the finals, well I imagine it was like hitting a wall at 50 mph. Then Cryptic said it wasn't chosen because it looked too much like the Enterprise, well back up and hit the wall again in the same car.

Yep. And that's why people liked it, it was traditional Trek.

I don't think Cryptic will do it any time soon. First they got a lot of unused designs the first time. Submissions made those designs theirs to use. Second, I'm sure it was a huge pain to do the contest.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

It lookto much like an original series ship. STO is 40 years after Next Generation. Sure the new ships should have some things in common with older ones but as time goes on the ships must change and keep up with the times.

If that was the case then the Enterprise-J would've been a drastically different than the giant NX-01 it ended up becoming. So while the Enterprise-J isn't liked, it's 100% canon, while the Enterprise-F isn't.

I'm pretty sure they used up all the good ideas by now. Then again, doesn't take much to get ideas from other sources.

I doubt we see another contest due to all the complaints but I would like to see a feature of the game where we can design our own ships.

As it turns out, a lot of Trek fans are talented artists and designers who have a firm grasp of computer arts and a personal vision of what Trek can be. Can you not see how intimidating this would be to a person whose employment is jeopardized by someone who will do his job for free?

This didn end too well for us the last time...

Not for Cryptic, Not for the next enterprise, and not for the creator.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

Hopefully if they do this again it won't just be for a fed ship...they should have different categories for the different races/factions.

Yes. That's my way of agreeing with you and adding the fact that if they did it again(which I doubt they ever would) same thing would happen.
