just replaying fluid dynamics, and i'm still impressed with what the artists came out with, as i was with the incredible job they did with iconia in the midnight episode, kobali prime, etc. Then it occured to me that i've never given them the credit I think they deserve, so for my thank you, i'm giving you the same opportunity to express your thanks.
Do you think the artists in this game rock? 48 votes
Yes, not only do they rock, they are true Geniuses.
I suppose, it's not my preferred art form.
Don't ask me, I have no taste.

I dare you to show me one Cryptic design that's objectively worse than a Yaeger, the U.S.S. Pizza Cutter-J or anything from JJTrek.

Chimera, Odyssey, Bortasqu
Need I go on?

Those are god tier compared to the garbage scows I mentioned.
I'll give you the Yeager and Ent-J, although I attribute the Ent-J to being farther in the future than what we are used to so that could explain the design shift. The Yeager is just a bad kitbash of an Intrepid and Maquis ship used as a background ship.
The AR Connie however does have her good angles. I admit I wasn't a fan at first but seeing her pop out of Titan was frickin' awesome. And my personal headcanon is that she is only 366 meters long. NOT 700+ meters.

Except animations. They look awkwardly puppeteered.
If I could allocate temporary resources to one thing, art wise, it would be getting proper mo-cap work. A friend of mine was a mo-cap actor on the Gears of War series.
STO is still using animations that were developed for City of Heroes 12 years ago, I think. As a result, people look like marionettes. I think that and some of the physics are the weakest parts of STO's visuals. I know people freak out about changing this stuff but the rigging can make some really well designed artwork look like a PS1 game in motion.
For a considerable part in me, they represent the reason why I stick to STO.

Speaking of Titan - the Luna class is not from Cryptic and I really dislike it. It is almost good, but then you see the deflector and it all goes to waste.
But I think overall that ship designs are not to everyone's liking is pretty understandeable. Ship Design is a bit more subjective then environments, I think, and people have different tastes. And it's your personal ship you're going to fly there, and thus there needs to be a lot of variation to find a ship(kitbash) you identify yourself (or at least your character) with. And thus it becomes a bit like clothing and tatoos - people definitely have differing tastes here.
Visually it is widely accepted by the players and it appears to match the aesthetics of the franchise, obviously since CBS signs off everything they produce for use. So client is happy, customers are happy, all is well.
I will add however, that quality wise their work can suffer in places. Certain parts of the models not lining up properly, certain texture problems and plenty of glitches all over the place. Obviously this is due to workload and time constraints, I realise the machine has to keep churning.
Alas, in the real world simply good enough will do when deadlines bear down on you.
Oddy is beautiful, Bortasqu is ok, Chimera is ugly as sin.
"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
they have done an impressive job for: kobali prime, Vaadwaurs, Voth BZ, the old Iconia, the old iconians are just wonderful etc; but there are also average stuff: stretched textures, bad uvmapping, low poly models (ground weapons); texturing problem (forgotten the name of this problem): the textures do not match perfectly, for example the back of the krenim uniforms. this problem exists also for some ship materials (type 5 for the avenger, etc).
but these problems are just details, sometimes very annoying like the problem on the Intel short uniform (550 zen), but my overall opinion about their job is very good.
i have only a real problem. the new romulan ships; pilot ships (so ugly) and the Mogai and arkif t6 upgrades; in my opinion this seems a lazy job (or a financial need): 2 or 3 details added and hop! in the c-store.
But the aelah is very nice (please keep in mind this ship ). i like also most of the kdf ships except the new mogh (personal taste). And i don't have an opinion about the fed ships.
But when it comes to ships I am not so positive. Although I personally liked the intel ships and the delta pack's ships as a whole, federation command cruisers look quite bad in my opinion.(romulan were great though, Vastam class comes to mind) Romulan pilot ships on the other side look like plastic toys, although federation line of pilot ships looks awesome. I didn't also like the Resolute class, the deflector area of Excelsior generally is just ugly(IMO).
But I am looking forward to the unannounced line of ships, I hope they release them soon.
As for the ships...technically I think most of their models are "designed" well. I thought the Intel ships were god awful in appearance but that is more opinion - they were designed well. Ship design is tough going but I generally feel the design team does a good job with detail even if I don't agree with the "look." For example, I've never liked the look of the Excelsior. I've just always thought it was an ugly ship the first time I saw it on screen, but for what it's worth their recreation of it is spot on for the most part.
Overall I think they do a good job with what they have to work with.
"Coffee: the finest organic suspension ever devised. It's got me through the worst of the last three years. I beat the Borg with it."
I somewhat agree. The imbalance in the game is really bad.
Athough, on some things, like the spec trees, they kinda nailed it becouse I found those designed very smart.
My bigest beaf is with the content design, especially the queues one. If for the art part art, may it be enviroment art or ship art, you are rendered breathless sometimes, the timers/optionals/fail objectives seem to be made on purpose to trip, hinder and make the gameplay experience as horrible as possible
Also I feel that the art departement is working even more now, after DR. Well, started actually before the DR, with the first xindi lockbox, where you have 2 bridges. Now on some lockoxes there are even 3 distinct bridges, where prior was just 1 bridge for 2-3 ships (lockbox and/or pack ship). And I know making a bridge takes some time...
