So it seems it's an attempt to get people back in game. Apparently people who actually play the game get nothing, while people who don't get a free $30 ship, ten spec points and a 'thank you for your support message'. Well, whatever I guess, nothing to be done about it.
Ummmm.... This week alone...
2 FREE Spec. Points per character
2 FREE Ship slots for a toon
FREE Account-wide Section 31Outfit.
Seems fair to me.
You entirely missed the point.
What point, that he was whining cause he didn't get it...
Or that there's rampant self-entitlement amongst many forum posters around here?

And clearly not receptive of the point either.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Trendy herself said it was for people who haven't played in a while, over on twitter. Thinking maybe I should just quit the game for a while.
Conversely, people who ARE here during special events get things that people who AREN'T here, cant. Example: the Summer event ship, and the free items this week.
Typically, that's how things work... you play, and as a result, you are around in game when events happen so you can get those things. Outside of a few reasons (like active military service), I have no sympathy for a non-active player missing out on in-game rewards when the game is F2P and costs nothing but logging in for 15 mins a day for 25 days- at most.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but there is one point that seems a little..."ill thought". The email states:
"As a thank you for your support..."
If they want to give former players some free stuff to attract them back, they have every right to do so. But if you are going to say you are doing it because these people "support" the game, that seems to ignore the people who have always supported the game by never leaving in the first place.
This isn't a "big deal", but it is a strange way to phrase things considering the details.
As I expected, legitimate grievances with Cryptic's business practices are being met with mockery from the playerbase. Well it doesn't matter, what's done is done.
They should have just announced it with the other events that have been going on. It doesn't bother me any they did this, as I have played other games that have given cash item pack to entice players to return. The difference is that they all announced that they were having a returning player pack give-away. To just do it under the table like it seems, is just poor judgement.
Crappy wording on Their part still doesn't excuse the folks who feel entitled and whine about it.
It's a random email based on who knows what kind of parameters They picked out.
Another RNG that will have people up-in-arms over a video game.

I can see how stuff like this comes across as frustrating for those of us that have played the entire time. It feels like players that left are getting something that those of us that have been here supporting the game don't get.
I have to wonder how long the accounts have to be inactive though, if it's a year or more then it's not really all that much. I mean, in the last year we have received 3 free T6 Ships (Samsar, Sarr Theln, Nandi) so it's not like we didn't get anything for being here.
Overall, I always go for the idea of rewarding loyal customers over trying to re-gain lost customers, but I understand why they want to get people back to the game. I personally don't care for it, but I honestly don't care that much.

The thing is, it doesn't have to be one or the other. They could have sent out an email each day this week to former player telling them what item they get for free if they log in. That way everybody gets it, and the former players still get notified about something free they get if they come back. So not that you are doing this, but anyone who acts like it has to be one or the other is creating a strawman argument that is false.
If it were something small like a shuttle or a few keys, that'd be one thing, but a $30 ship and ten spec points is way too much for a 'please come back' bribe as far as I'm concerned.
I am assuming that based on the 10 free spec points. They are sending out to characters pre lvl 60 cap. Also if want them to stay after they return you need to give them something good. Give them keys they will use and if they don't win a ship just leave again. Give them a t6 ship higher chance they will stick around.
I'm uninterested in the specialisation points but the ship is pretty.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

So had I stayed away for some time I would still be effectively where I have got to right now ie able to train boffs in 2 specialisations. Definitely should have neglected STO and played other games then.
cant say I have had an email like this, the only thing I would advise is don't click the "REDEEM NOW" link, go to the proper web page and use the code there.
go to the sto web page, click on Guides and scroll down to the redeem a key link.
if the key works it is genuine and if it fails its a scam.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
Well it is just another fail, by Cryptic. The players that stick around and play the game don't get anything. Players that spend money get nothing except what they pay for. Players that leave because of TRIBBLE poor Dev decisions get 10 spec points and a tier 6 ships. Does Cryptic understand that some of the player base is not happy and they are driving more people away. If they might change their mentality and fix bugs, fix PVE, fix PVP, balance classes, and get DPS under control they might keep player instead of having to intise plays back. All this has done has pissed me off. I use to play everyday, now I find myself logging every other day and player another game more often. This is not helping me want to play STO.
The gifts don't bother me. It's the poor wording of "Thanks for supporting " when the player that received the email hasn't played enough to support anything. The wording makes it feel like a slap in the face to those that stayed with the game and actually played and paid.
wow.... really.
So if i stay away a while, will i get a free krenim dread?
Bathe them in spec points, sure, hand them one of the event ships but to dole out a ~30 dollar ship... uh hum...
Hey, give T6 Galaxy X for free to ever owner of all the other galaxy models...
Because we supported you despite taking a dump on the class for like 5 years..

likewise the gifts don't bother me either but what I think is poorly worded is where it says "Elite Rewards for Veterans like You" surely then this should be for all current veterans not just one or a few.
that's assuming this is genuine.

Just got home and claimed the promotions. Yep, free t6 Andromeda and 10 spec points.
Errr.... I'm probably going to be calling myself out here but here goes. My account is a few years old and has been intermittently active. Right now, my fed is essentially covered in cobwebs... haven't really looked back at him since moving over to kdf. Thing is, my kdf has been very active as of late. Been playing regularly since just before the Iconian War arc.
No idea how my account gets classified as "inactive". Perhaps they were only looking at active fed characters on accounts?
I don't mind Cryptic giving inactive players little gifts to encourage them to return, that's just good business. And the Spec points given out yesterday (and earlier today) do kinda make that 10 pack look small, as I run 12 characters I effectively got 24 free points yesterday. Woo Hoo!
But when the message states, 'Veteran Player' and 'thanks for your support'... well it's a bit rude but I'm still not really upset.
I do find it also a bit rude that Cryptic offers these 'encouragement packages' effectively rewarding inactive players, and has nothing along the lines of a 'customer loyalty' program to offset these kind of things.
Ah well, those absent players probably missed out on nifty goodies like the Nandi, Sarr Theln, or Samsar... but then again, we had to earn those goodies through daily missions or lobi purchases... Hmm.
Edit: For the record I'm not going to make a fuss about this, I'm just scratching my head over it.
Oh, just in case... Thank you for the free goodies over the past few days!
Edit 2: 22 points, not 24. Just checked and I missed a character... darn.

Players who stick around often get stuff that absent players don't.
Still... those absent players did absolutely squat for those spec points...

The problem was that it also went to some active players while other actives didn't get anything for sticking around.
