For those of you railing against the OP - this was clearly what he was referring to...
Until we get more information its hard to judge, but from what I can see this looks like a pretty spiteful move by Cryptic. Timegating Defera because its popular, in some kind of attempt to push people elsewhere? Lame
But that's just not how it works. If they remove content we enjoy playing; it won't make us to go play some other content that we don't enjoy, for one reason or another. This is exactly what pushes people away; and I'm starting to see where that's coming from. As unfortunate as that is for me - always wanted this game to be good and fun, not just for me but for others - but recently, I feel so negative with the direction they seem to be taking... so removing content I actually ENJOY, without adding new, equally enticing for me - makes it harder to just swallow.
Agreed. Shutting down the Defera warzone means people stop playing there. It doesn't mean we go to some of the less interesting, if not entirely exclusively grindy "content". Making other spots better would mean we would go to those places more often. Honey attracts more flies than vinegar. But they insist on throwing away the honey and doubling down on the vinegar. What's next? Shutting down the Voth or Undine BZs too? If they keep this up, it will start another exodus much like Delta Rising.

That's exactly my point. This is not going to encourage people to go off and play a diverse range of content, including the latest flavour of the month PVE that Cryptic wants them to in order to meet their metric targets.
It is going to p**s people off, and drive them to find the next most efficient source that meets their XP, Fleet Mark or whatever needs. Its like Tau Dewa, Argala, etc, all over again.
I think Cryptic really needs to reconsider its strategy of attempting to coerce and control player behaviour - it seems determined to crush any emergent/meta gameplay. Players have agency and will not react passively to Dev actions/changes. They are creative and will find ways to work around these restrictions and changes, probably in a way that Cryptic finds worse than the original situation.
Whats that quote from Star Wars about "The more you tighten your grip, the more planets will slip through your fingers?"
The reason Defera & for example, Voth BZ is fun, is because you can come in when you want, no need to have a team, and simply play the game. It rewards nicely enough for the effort, given the content is fun to play. Most other places and content is timegated, so you have to wait around - unless you concede and play something you don't enjoy as much - just to have something to do. They're getting this entirely upside down. They're not encouraging people to play the game with this - they encourage waiting around... or wanting to control what content people play & how often.
And that, in my opinion is in exactly opposite direction of what makes the game fun. Games are supposed to be fun for us, aren't they? And we should be given the free-hand to play Adventure zones in our pace, the way it has been, the way it's fun. As something different from timegated queues.
But, lately, everything is timegated. Red-Alerts. STFs. Adventure Zones. Bringing more of that... eh.. just bad decision. Let us play the game.

Defera was great to pop in and see if you could get a team together to run the hard missions. Or just run around and run some of the easy missions if you wanted to. And the Borg are not as annoying to fight as the Voth with their medics, or the Vadwuaar and their stupid, stupid guns of quick death. The borg were fun to fight, and one of the few enemies you can go full melee on. Now we have to fit to Cryptic's timetable? What about the different timezones? What if people are at work when the timegate pops? What the frak is the point in this?
This won't convince me to go anywhere else in the game, this will just convince me to spend less time in game. Seriously, I want to know the reason for timegating Defera. And if the answer is metrics.....

Not necessarily, at least not with the Defera Borg. I know a few high spots that are perfect for sniping positions. And even while perched up there, I have still been assimilated by drones ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM. So I can personally confirm that at least the Defera Borg do possess the ability to assimilate from sniping range.
Defera was the one last thing that I still did in this game. So now, Cryptic wants to remove the only thing I still do?
Not wanting to condone it, but it unfortunately makes sense from an economic PoV. Not talking about you in person, but players mostly residing in a single niche of your offers often do not help the overall experience and tend to be, unless they're whaling, dead weight. If - a big if - Cryptic goes down this path of thinking (and as mentioned there are reasons to do so) it does not bode well for other favorites, like certain patrols and/or STFs.
Which is somewhat disconcerting, since probably most of us, certainly me, find their own little niche in this game which we enjoy (more than the rest) and not being able to do so at our leisure would be inconvenient. And though I always found Defera less fun than, say, Nimbus III, we can't really argue about who's enjoying what and why.
In either case, it's not really useful to worry if it will come while it is still on Tribble. You may feel uncomfortable, but until it hits Holodeck I would try to keep disappointment and anger at bay.
My mother was an epohh and my father smelled of tulaberries
It was the last genuinly fun thing in STO. So if it does end up being removed, expect to see a large portion of the playerbase permanently leaving STO.
Should they really think that there are too many people here? I don't know about other time zones, but when I play, there's 2 instances, 3 tops. Hardly the type of excessively overplayed areas.
I don't suppose there's even a fools hope this is about fixing defera instead of shutting it down, is there? A few days without Defera in exchange for a future defera that's bug free?
There are too few places these days where you can just come in and play.
And as to a large portion of the playerbase leaving STO... why would they even risk it? After giving a "come back" gift to some long time non-players, why would they risk more of an exodus?
If they try this, they might as well release the T7 ships as well, because I won't be around for either.
We killed thousands and they still came. Nothing more satisfying than popping a Seismic Agitation Field on a group trying to assimilate a Deferi. They stumble around towards the center, keeping them together, then you hit them with an Elachi Subspace Rift, then cook them with an Exothermic Induction Field. Put any remainders out of their misery with a few placed shots from a TR-116b.
You see people running around with all sorts of melee weapons having the time of their lives.
I go there every day with one of my Delta Recruits. I sure hope they are not going to pull 'Geko' on this fun zone.

The reason WHY there are so few people around is because Delta Rising broke it worse than it already was to begin with. Instead of writing new episodes, and new content, they need to fix the stuff that already exists.

Indeed... and by that, I don't mean add timegates & more restrictions on when and how to play content I and I am sure some others, enjoy. <.<

I don't like doing the FE's (too much pizzin' & moanin') and the only way I can get the OMEGA stuff is by playing Defera on a regular basis. I LIKE playing there. I can collect the things I need pretty much on my own.
If They do remove it or time-gate it, there will be very little reason for me to continue playing the game as regular as I do.
Defera is a great place for lone-wolf players like myself to gather resources.
PLEASE Cryptic, don't frack around with it so much that it becomes even more impossibly difficult to do the OMEGA Rep. on ones own.
I'm already pretty much cut out of getting any of the other high-end gear from several of the other rep's, due to my dislike of FE's, any limiting of the Defera Zone would severly curtail my interest in continuing to play the game.
I know I'm only one player, but I've invested a rather large sum of money into this game over the last five years, and would like to continue to do so for several more for both of our enjoyments.

Actually I think I can see why given recent fixes to server lag and rubberbanding why the content may become time gated, as it is at the moment when I run around Defera I see loads of players using all sorts of powers and as a result I rubber band all over the place.
This may be an attempt to reduce the problems this creates while looking at background data to further see what causes it and under what circumstances.
All that being said though, I still don't like the idea off it being that way, but all depends on what else they are going to do along side it (if anything!).

So they're re-adding the timegates they got rid of a while ago becuase people complained about them. That makes no sense.
Are we sure this isn't some kind of Tribble goof like the skill points thing?

what?
get a tr-116, max it out, and go have fun, defera is fun if you can tolerate the bugs
dont use shotguns against the borg... tr 116 keeps you out of range of their needles
Edit: Or is this yet another Defera bug?
