What are you going to do about Windows 10?

As most of you have probably heard, Microsoft will be making Windows 10 publicly available soon, with free upgrades to people who are currently using Windows 7 and 8.1.

I may be the only person in the world who is still not decided on what I will do when this happens--and even more, one of the only Windows 8.1 users who has actually been happy. I never had the original Windows 8 version--just 8.1. But most critically, my laptop has a touchscreen that I use heavily. I was even pleased enough with 8.1 that when I got my tablet, I chose an 8.1 tablet over an iPad (the other device I seriously considered), and definitely over an Android (baaaaaad experience there...baaaaaad).

I am actually hesitant about taking the Windows 10 upgrade, and potentially ruining an interface that for me, is actually working as intended.

So I am curious to know what you guys are planning to do (or not do) about the Windows 10 upgrade, and why.

I use 8.1 because it's what's on my computer and I can't afford to buy a custom device with Windows 7 (my preferred system). I am a big anti-fan of touchscreens and products designed for them in general; call me a traditionalist.

There's a reason they did. It's nothing nefarious. But in lay terms, there are a lot of programs out there with rules for windows systems labelled "9x" which is to say "Windows 95" or "Windows 98" which causes something to run differently.

To prevent those rules from recognizing Windows 9 as "Windows 9x", since it only identifies the first number, they skipped to 10.

You sure about that? I recall the wailing and gnashing of teeth for months when STO wasn't working for Apple users.

This isn't a snipe at you or any other Apple users. I feel the same way about AMD or anything else that isn't nVidia.

Most companies test their games on nVidia cards primarily, it's the industry standard. So if I ever need a new graphics card, I instinctively to go nVidia because I know it is the least likely to give me issues with video games since that's what game companies tend to use.

Similarly, I know most companies have little support for Apple or Linux systems, so if I want to play video games on a PC, I'll go to a Windows-based OS. This isn't to say Apple and Linux are somehow inferior to Windows, but if something is the industry standard, I gravitate toward it for the sake of usability.

Honestly, I was just getting my fanboy quotient in for the day.

And, yes, Apple gets the shaft from the gaming community... and, yes, the time in which the STO client was constantly crashing was very frustrating. (That time reminded me of the the four-plus years I had to sit on the sidelines, when there was no Mac client at all... THAT was just frustrating.) However, I don't see how that's Apple's fault... which is why I don't take your comment as a slight. It's a simple fact: most games (MMOs especially) don't run on Macs, outside of WoW.

All that said... I do a lot more on my Mac than play STO, and that I why I love it.

You find their lack of 9's disturbing? ;)

But anyway...I did want to throw out two questions to see if anyone knows the answers to them.

    1) If you like the Metro interface on 8.1 (I do because I have touchscreens), can you still use that on 10, or are you forced onto the "new desktop" as the be-all-end-all of interfaces?

    2) Will there be an option to download and install Cortana on 8.1 devices other than phones? As in, can I get Cortana for my 8.1 laptop without getting Windows 10?

As a Window's Insider, I will stick with Windows 8/8.1. I don't like being forced to install updates automatically, I don't like having Windows Update automatically install and choose the best drivers for my system, I am so past the stupid Start Menu, and I hate the massive step backwards it is! As someone who embraced each version of Windows and beta tested everything from XP forward. Windows 10 will be the first I refuse to upgrade to.

Oh, that's a BIG hot button for me. One of the reasons I dropped the Chrome browser was forced updates (which I did a LOT of setting changes and manual deletes to prevent) and force-preventing rollbacks--compounded by the fact that they released several fatally bugged versions and wouldn't own up to it. That starts to push me more towards staying with 8.1, since it works for me.

I still have Cortana envy though...if they would put that out as a software package you could put with 8.1 on a laptop, that would be nice.

And am I interpreting correctly that the Metro interface is not an option at all with Windows 10?

Cortana is a nice addition but Windows 10 is literally just Windows Phone 10 for your desktop. It unifies the same code for the XBOX One, Windows Phone, and PC. If you have an old dual core or something that came with XP that hasn't been upgraded. It would be something that would breathe new life into an old computer. For something new though, it lacks a lot of polish, there is no Aero, no Metro UI, and basically just a Start Menu with tiles added into it that can go full screen.

I hate forced updates as well and these updates extend to drivers as well. Windows is absolutely awful at deciding the best drivers for hardware less than 2 years old. If I want to stick to a particular display driver that is different than the one Windows recommends, it will download and install it without any sort of notification. Windows 10 will have no native DVD support so you will need to buy an add-on or install another program to watch DVD's. Anyone with the Windows Media Center will completely removed when upgrading from Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Previous versions of Windows games like Solitaire will be removed although free versions should appear in the Windows 10 store for at least some of them. This also leaves complete control over your OS in the hands of Microsoft because they can install and remove anything they want at will.

No reason not to. It's similar to a Facebook or YouTube update; disorienting at first, but you get used to it.

As a side note, it's also similar to another recent update I know of...

Wow. That just gets worse and worse. And when I read what they intend to do AFTER Windows 10...yuck. No. Office 360 is bad enough (I use LibreOffice to get around that on my tablet...fortunately my laptop came with Office 2013). Dealing with a whole OS that is a subscription service...ewwwwwwww.

I'm thinking now that my gut feeling to stay on 8.1 was the right one. O_O

I use 8.1 now and will upgrade to 10.
I have to say, when 7 came out, i always found 7 the most loyal and stable OS. Even when 8 came out, even when 8.1 came out i decided to stick with 7. Also of fear that the programs i had were lost (compatibility, etc )
After a severe computer crash, making me to force reinstall, i tried Windows 8.1.
Since i am producing music and using heavy usage DAW'S ( Digital audio workstation software ) , i was curious how 8.1 handles that. They told me W8.1 is efficient with dedicated memory usage, so i gave it a try.
After doing some initial settings, like turning off Metro, i was actually stunned about the response times, start-up, and how it handles my DAW. I actually regret not installing 8.1 earlier, because i am so happy with 8.1.

Now that Windows asked me to reserve a copy for the new 10 installment, i was doubting aswell. But i am learning my lesson, that sometimes waiting could be regretable. So i decided to install 10 when it is available. I have backed up everything already, and will do so again just before i install 10. I still have the 8.1 installment, so when i don't like it, i install back to the original state. For what i read 10 is even more efficient then 8.1, and for my work as producing music it's only convenient.

Hah, trust me not to fit any of the available options - I'm running Vista on this one and XP on another one that's not connected to the Internet.

I do think it's pretty stupid that Microsoft insist on either making desktops run an interface designed for touchscreens, or touchscreens run an interface designed for desktops - surely it's not beyond their ingenuity to think of the astonishing possibility of having two versions!

If that's true about Windows 10 making automatic updates compulsory and non-reversible, then that pretty much rules it out for me. I've had updates break things like everyone else has. Hopefully my current computer will last me until they have to go back on that.

Failing that, anyone here know a good non-Windows OS that's compatible with a reasonable proportion of programs meant for Windows? (there are always programs you can't just use an alternative for, such as games, Open University course software, and so on.) No, not Android, for the reason Iconians just mentioned... I was thinking more in terms of whether any of the Linux variants do well on that, say.

For me, compulsory updates is a small price to pay for realising the potential of my system (See DX12). If it does go subscription based then I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Well Win 7 will be receiving extended support till Jan 2020 so there's no rush unless you want Win 10 upgrade for free, if so you will have a year to upgrade (last I heard).

You could run Windows in a Virtual machine on Linux or dual boot Windows and Linux only using Windows for gaming or programs you absolutely need. I dual boot, use Windows to play STO but web surfing, email, most every thing else on Linux. It is possible to even watch Netflix on Linux now with the Chrome Browser.

If you just need a simple machine for web surfing, email, cloud services, watching youtube, a Chromebook could be a good choice providing your okay with Google having all your stuffs.

Still worried they'll be repeating the control freakery of Vista (and the bit I heard about the new(ish) Xbox refusing to allow an owner to watch rented movies unless the 'approved' number of people or less are in the room is hardly encouraging in that regard.) Also the forced updates - I can kind of understand it from the security perspective, but to me it just seems like another way to control what someone can and can't have on their machine.

Plus, I don't actually know how accurate this is, but I was under the impression it was being deliberately designed without support for Steam, and based on some other anti-competitive practice in the industry, I'm willing to give that credence (although if someone can correct this impression, I'd welcome it.)
