Resonance Beam & Graphics Settings

So just did a Gateway To Grethor run where I had my first run-in with someone using Destabilizing Resonance Beam (yeah I know I'm 6 weeks late; haven't been doing 5-man stuff lately), plus Neutronic Spread and KLW besides. When he alphaed the boss group at the end, the light show gave me an instant headache that lasted half an hour, and I had to Evasive out of the fight because I simply couldn't look at my targets without feeling sick. 30 years of gaming, never had that happen before. Even JJ-Trek doesn't do that.

So is there something I can turn off in my graphics settings to negate the effects, turn off bloom or some kind of filtering or something? I mean I get that games will have some bright lights they always do, but DRB especially is just waaaaaaay to much and I certainly can't control what other people use. There's gotta be something.

Not that I know of. It can give me a headache too. I complained about it the day it came out, but it's often hard to get the dev's attention on something like this. Even if they just changed the color to purple it wouldn't be so bad. The only thing that helps is moving away so that the blast does not take up your whole screen.

Also, it's terrible in PvP when getting hit by it. One can't see anything.

As for the mechanics of the power, I love it!! It's just too bright and flashy...

    It's an actual player confuse/dizzy debuff. :D

All kidding aside, I agree with you both. The visual effects of these abilities need to be toned down. It has gotten to be distracting, and it slows down FPS by quite a bit when a lot of these explosions go off.

I agree it is a bit over the top with the flashing lights show.

There is no need for it to be so dammed bright and in your face to the extent that you can't actually see what you are doing!

A lot of the newer abilities are causing all manner of graphical nightmares. DRB is blinding you and that weird vortex one leaves its effects everywhere so the Solanae sphere is overflowing with them!

Sheesh another GTGN another lightshow-induced headache. I'm starting to really dread seeing science ships on my team, particularly when I glance them over and see Particle Manipulator slotted and know whats almost certainly coming. I suppose its kinda funny in a sad way, how its supposed to be a licensed Star Trek game but has more excessive visual garbage than the Star Wars prequels.

Regina, if i may ask: did you play CoH? If so, did you get walloped by the 1st-gen graphics for Sonic powers? Just curious, as I know guys who couldn't play more than 5m after someone showed up with a Sonic.

I'm sure your DPS is great, but as Kahless said, "a petaQ with high system mastery is still a petaQ." (Well, he should have said it...!)

I did not play CoH. My only MMOs have ever been Asheron's Call in the late 90s, then STO and SWTOR now.

Fair 'nuff. I asked b/c that was a common complaint about Sonic powers for oh, the first couple years after they went live. I had guys I knew exactly who to play if I wanted to chase them off. :-)

That thread mostly just seems agreement with this one. I particularly like the people who are making statements like 'well if that kind of thing bugs you then you shouldn't be playing this game.' Except this game wasn't so headache-inducing till relatively recently. I mean if they can redo the visuals for FBP or GW or Extend Shields, certainly they can do something here. Just have to hope they do.

Well, some settings to try from the thread (easy to miss with all the arguing I suppose):
"To combat this, I turn off a lot of the settings that make everything extremely bright. Opacity of my game is lowered and my 42" screen has it set to an ambient type setting to prevent from me getting bothered by overstimulation." I could've sworn there was more/better suggestions in that thread, not sure where I saw the suggestions then...

You might try poking the art people on Twitter, Cryptic people typically don't visit the forums much, and I think the art people would be the closest ones, besides possibly systems people, to get in touch with regards concerns of how things look.
