So, I've been away from STO a couple of months, playing single player games and whatnot. And I periodically open the launcher and update STO in case I want to play it.
But really? What's there to make me want to pick it up again?
New Ships! That I'll have to grind at minimum three months for.
Story Missions! That do not give me current tiered gear.
Delta Recruit! Play through old content + scavenger hunt.
Craft Upgraded Weapons! That will take lots of hassle and frustration while constantly getting undesirable results because Rando Calrissian designed the upgrade system.
New Special Task Force Misisons! That lemme guess: Nobody knows how to do. Nobody's geared to do. Or, someone is just downright trolling you because the mechanics are broken!
Sector Space is Contiguous. Yay. I can barely withhold my enthusiasm.
TL DR. Every time I load up Star Trek Online, I know that it will be a minimum of two months of monotonous gameplay to get anything that has been newly introduced. So, I don't really want to load Star Trek Online.
But seriously, ain't our job to tell you what to play. Play if you like to, and not a moment more.
I recommend Cities: Skylines, Grand Theft Auto V or Witcher 3.
Some people also do this real life thing, I dabble in it, but it kinda sucks. Lots of grinding, and I have never gotten any good drops that I remember.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
I recommend Cities: Skylines, Grand Theft Auto V or Witcher 3.

There are few, if any, games out there which do not contain significant amounts of grind and monotony.
STO at least has Klingons baby.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

is this a step up from an I quit thread?, a why should I bother to come back thread.
well in answer to your question you should not come back as you so obviously don't want to, if you really wanted to come back you would not need to ask the question, especially in such a negative way.
stick with your single player games, you will be far happier I`m sure.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
New Ships! That I'll have to grind at minimum three months for."
Don't really need them. Or you can open your wallet. PWE is a for-profit company, you can't get mad at them for not giving away all their product for free.
Craft Upgraded Weapons! That will take lots of hassle and frustration while constantly getting undesirable results because Rando Calrissian designed the upgrade system.
Again, you don't have to do that. It's really only frustrating if you're looking for the absolute best weapons, the ones that are several times more powerful than what's needed to beat content.
New Special Task Force Misisons! That lemme guess: Nobody knows how to do. Nobody's geared to do. Or, someone is just downright trolling you because the mechanics are broken!
Don't pug. Join a private channel. Or get really good and treat pugs as solo missions. I don't know how game mechanics could change so that trolling is impossible (but the game remains multiplayer) and I see it so rarely in-game that I wonder where this complaint comes from.
Since you were asking: You really shouldn't come back. The game is more broken than ever, there is more cash-grabs, p2w and grind than ever.
After DR almost everyone was complaining about the insane upgrade costs. Cryptic did not care and even increased the cost by about 10 times!!! (Yes, MK II upgades that no longer work properly I'm looking at you )
It's not our job to convince you to stay or go, and honestly most of us couldn't possibly care any less either way.
I know that sounds harsh, and I'm sorry, but it's just the truth. This is a free game, it costs nothing more then time to download and install it and jump in and play. In the time you spend waiting for replies to this thread, you can just install the game, play it and see if you enjoy it.
No one here can tell you if you will enjoy the game or not. It's free.. download it and try it and see if you have fun.
Or don't.. either way, it's your time. Do with it what you wish.

If its all about the gear and items, STO may not be for you.
If its all about getting said items with no time/play investment, STO may not be for you. If content feels like a grind rather than a passtime, STO might not be for you.
If you actually enjoy flying around in your ships and look up one day and can afford something new, and the game is fun, then STO is a good choice.
Most long time players eventually take breaks or move on. Same as every other MMO.

T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

Seriously why is it that everyone lately is of the "If I can't have the latest and greatest NOW, then STO is useless money trap and is cheating me".
Everytime I see one of these threads, I feel like shoving a pacifier in the OP's face and saying "Here, now shut up".
"Go play with your DPS in the corner, I don't care how big it is." ~ Me "There... are... four... lights!" ~Jean Luc Picard
My response to the OP is, don't play for the rewards. Play for your own entertainment. Find something you DO like in the game, and play for that.
However, reading the post makes it clear that he doesn't play for entertainment. If it's not coughing up the top-end goods on a regular basis for free without his having to even try (or "grind", as he puts it), he doesn't want to play.
Which is fine. Not everything is for everyone - there are any number of quite popular games I don't play, because they don't tickle my particular Skinner box. You don't find the entertainment value of this game sufficient, feel free to find another one that does. However, dropping a thread in here demanding that we discover for him a reason to play smacks of some pretty severe ego issues.

I understand your frustration, but I've found that the game is what you make of it. At one point I felt the same way. But they're improving things slowly but surely. The removal of the sector space walls is a great modification. New ships are coming out so I have hope that, one of these days, I'll see a T6 K'tinga variant. Who knows. New content dribbles out. But I've learned to check things out more. I spend some time going places on the maps and making Captain's log entries. I'm making entries and writing a story in the process. I enjoy building up quality DOFF crew. And while doing these things...and other things also...I enjoy it. Even if it's selling things on the Exchange, I enjoy it.
In the past six months, I've seen the developers start to make some good moves. And slowly but surely, it's gotten better. My hope is that this will continue. I'm pretty sure it will. That's their goal obviously. And while I'm playing, I'm enjoying it.

Um, ok. Some people play them because they're fun, but those people are clearly weirdos who think that video games are about fun and not work.
People liked it. And it's over.

It sorta just sounds like you don't like this game. That's ok. You can't please everybody all of the time.

I play games to have fun. If I'm not having fun in a game I DON'T PLAY IT.
I don't enjoy playing Mortal Kombat so I don't play it. I also don't go to the MK forums to whine and moan about how it isn't fun for me.
I do enjoy playing STO. So I play it, and keep my stuffs.
