Besides, you are not missing anything gamebreaking, you can find close alternatives in the C-store or on the exchange from lockboxes.

    "Just spend money"

10/10 solution, why didn't I think of that

Surely throwing money at cryptic will make me forget my grievances

Personally, I think it sucks because a lot of work went into the corvette and luxury cruiser. They had more customization options than any other ship in the game -- and that isn't a trivial thing. That's just the superficial ship design, too.

I've never really agreed with Cryptic's policy on removing content or retiring ships.

Apparently those ships were good enough for dev blogs of their own, but not good enough to stick around for the long haul. The Risian Luxury Cruiser didn't even last a year.

If I had spent months working on the Risian Luxury Liner, only to be told it wouldn't be attainable for new players next year, I'd likely be very irate at my bosses.

You don't just retire art like that.

I'd rather have been annoyed at a repackaged T6 Risian Corvette than annoyed at ships with that kind of detail put into them being retired.

It really surprises me Stephen Ricossa would throw his ship design team under the bus like that.

guess the few months i stated back then are over now, we get to see what stephen brings to the table. so there it is, initially wary of stephen, i am still wary of what he will bring. so one not so good choice this time i agree, but it is rather small choice he made.

i want to see where he stands on expansion content under his direction, what choices he makes there before deciding one way or the other for certain though.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.

You can still exchange refined dilithium for ZEN so you dont need to spend a dime to get a c-store ship.

They apparently don't want new players to spend extra time on Risa to earn all the ships.

And considering the only new non-ship reward they've revealed so far is more clothes we're not allowed to actually use, it doesn't look like they want old players to spend much time there, either.

I`m still hoping they will give us alternative uses for this years Vouchers as they have done with the pearls, I enjoy doing the event especially the floater challenge it would be great if I could get some goodies with the extras I don't need especially on alt characters.
only don't make us wait till next year to trade them.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

I also consider it very disrespectful to the artists and developers. You're basically telling them that their time and effort into doing their jobs doesn't matter. It's bad for company morale and I would assume makes the people who work on those kinds of things feel unappreciated.

There is no sense in retiring these ships.

    Actually I don't get it.

These ships were event-bound ships. They have been designed specifically for a certain event and given out in a certain period. Once the event is over, these ships become a kind of a "veteran perk".

It's not uncommon in MMOs. It exists even in Eve Online, where ships are issued in limited numbers and they actually *blow up* (it means, get destroyed, deleted, completely removed: check THIS list).

It is correct that event items are unique, that's the main thing that makes them, uh, unique. Otherwise they would be common.

Why exactly? Someone still has to pay for that zen, it doesn't just poof into existence for free. All you're doing is giving someone else dilithium for zen they paid for.

Actually it is not. Some one payed real money for that Zen. As long as some one is supplying the Zen, Cryptic (rather PWE) is getting their money.

I don't get it either. There are quite a few players who are quite vocal with their opinion of T5ships being "obsolete". The Risian ships were T5. Not T5-U (not right out of the proverbial box anyway) - T5.

So why, all of a sudden, are so many players getting their panties in a twist over the removal of ships that belong to an "obsolete" tier?!?

Come on reyan you been around you know :) .. Some people just want to see the forums burn.

The limited event idea has been around in like every mmo ever, while yea it might suck cuz its not been the norm for cryptic, but it isnt entirely unlike them.. Can somebody point my delta recruit in the direction of the nearest samsar box? Or how about the normal t5 ambassador from the event two years ago? Its not like cryptic hasnt done this before.. Its just nobody expected it for the seasonal events.

Event ships get a free upgrade so they are actually T5U ships right out of the box, unless you're silly and don't press the upgrade button.

    T5 is obsolete, T5U not.

And really, how many new players are doing the complaining here? Sure, there's a few completionists, but most of it seems to be from veterans who either 1. are annoyed that they can't skip the event but still get the ships, or 2. say "oh, I couldn't get the ships in previous years, so I wanted to get back them now." New players, those still learning the ropes, likely haven't gotten so invested in minor dramas like this. (Except for the uber-completionists who will always have some "but why can't I get it?!?" thing to complain about, whether it's event rewards, obsolete achievements, quest items that no longer exist. Man, those folks always had a bunch to argue about in WoW...)

Do they really want players playing the mini-grind twice more over again just for a couple interesting-but-not-all-that-great T5U ships?

Dev's generally want player to spend time with their game but they also want player to spend a long time with their game, over say the course of months and/or years. Enabling burn outs isn't in anyone's interests which is where I can see the retiring of old currencies come in (since it limits you to just ONE grind per event.)

Also, I do find it quite amusing that of all the things to complain about for the upcoming summer event (such as Risa presently not working for a noticeable portion of the population) some old T5U ships have made it to the top of the list.

I haven't seen a ship that looks as good or has as many skin options as the Corvette. That's on top of being a solid ship with a free T5-U upgrade. Which is why I think they are getting rid of it, it's too good to be free.

Its becoming an account unlock for those that already have it. For those that don't it might be an interesting bobble but cryptic is continuously releasing more and more desirable options (such as pilot and command ships or new event ships.)

Granted nothing out now is quite like the vet or the liner in terms of style (which might be why they're generally not used) except of course for the galaxy class (the titanic to the Risan carnival cruise ship) but the same could be said for the devidian's cane or zephram's shotgun. Not all content is going to be accessible to all players ad infinitum. Its not something you may be accustomed to from a traditional offline RPG but for an online game that adds incentives for completing events as they come around and (more importantly to us) a certain warm feeling of specialness (which adds to the contextual significance of the content we unlock. Its not just crafting option number 13, its a special weapon or ship.)

Basically this sort of stuff plays the psychological card which is very important for a proper game of "making an MMO work."

....yes, the Corvette does have a bunch of nice skin options. But, personally, I've always been more of a fan of replaceable part options - different nacelles, saucers, pylons, etc.

(Which have also been a bit disappointing in the modern ships. No/few options unless you buy all the ships in a large pack, for instance. Or no options at all, thinking about the Mat'Ha I just unpacked on my Klingon main.... :()

I think my favorite ships overall in the game, design-wise? The Miranda/Centaur/ShiKahr and the T3 Cheyenne/Stargazer/Dakota. You could do such interesting things with the selection of parts. (The "heavy escort" line, especially once it got more parts from the Escort Carrier, could also do some interesting things.)

...almost bought the Intel Escort or Sci last ship sale, just so I could have different nacelles for my Intel Cruiser. But it really needs some longer/angled pylon options to really make use of them. Kind of sad that the newer ships just don't have the costume options of the older ones.

They wouldn't "always" have such things to complain about, if such things were not made unavalable in the first place.

From a collector's perspective, "retired" items and rewards inevitably ruin a game as new players are permanently disqualified from ever being competitive with old ones.

I certainly wouldn't want to be a new player at this point in STO timeline.

    That's an option, sure.

But the reason I couldn't get the event ships and the reason I don't convert to zen more often is that I just don't have time.

I was going to get the ships this year, all 3, from what effort I put into the last 2 events

Seeing that hope dashed in front of me because of some arbitrary decision to retire the established currency is levels of BS I don't want to stand for.

I already know my schedule is going to disallow me from getting the newest ship, so there isn't even a point loading into Risa this year.

Unless you know, I want a gimmicky shirt that'll be locked to Risa much like the swimsuits.

theres nothing particularly competitive about these ships and I am sure when new players get their hands on this years summer event ship they will be able to beat a player flying one of the old event ships hands down.

add to the fact that if these event ships were all that great you would see players flying around in them all the time but you don't.
they are nothing more then a novelty item, they are ok but most of the other T5 ships around are far better to be flying.

before they announced that the ships were to be account unlocks or any of the other stuff I was not even going to bother getting them for my delta characters even for just 1 run per ship, now they are an account unlock I still wont bother with them their just not that great.

new players have nothing to worry about on that score.

you would have been able to finish them this year with the new tokens when they become available.

Retiring unique ships like the Risian ships is a bad move. Sure, they may not be as powerful as the new T6 ship that will replace it, but not everyone flies particular ships because they're the end-all, be-all or power. Some people (like me) fly ships because they like how they look or fly or how their seating is.

This is another bad decision that is pushing me away from the game. One week without logging in so far and feeling happier for it.

How does this change help retain players?

How does this change bring in new players?

The game is bleeding players right now. There is no reason to make this change when it can only damage the playerbase instead of helping it.

I readily accept there is a problem with people just saving stuff from the previous year to get a head start on the new ships. However, this is a very poor solution to that problem.

They could have and should have just made it so you can only use the current years marks to do any of the ships you did not already have. This way saving would not work but players that did not have the ships could get them.

There is no reason to drive anyone away over this. I know there are people here that have the viewpoint that they have their ships and they should be exclusive so that nobody else can get them. That is a fine viewpoint in a healthy game but right now that viewpoint is not one the game can afford. The game needs players and anything that drives them away is not a good option unless the change brings in more people than it drives away.

I think many of the reasons that players are leaving are fairly easy to address and the situation is not even close to hopeless but changes do need to be made.

In this case change the system so you can earn any previous years event ship using the new currency. Locking out those old ships is only going to hurt the playerbase.

You see, I was here for the events

What's stopping them from allowing the projects to be slotted if you have the pearls?

Why wouldn't they allow that when they do something as TRIBBLE as announcing a currency change about a month before the event starts?

If they had told me LAST YEAR that this was the last chance to slot the ships, I would have, but no
They have to TRIBBLE over long time players for reasons I still haven't gotten an adequate explanation for.

I don't even care if the ships aren't the best, I never was one for the DPS race anyway.

(seriously, "limited" items, no-longer-achievable achievments, etc.... I don't think I've played an MMO over a year old that didn't have these things.)

Of course, I don't really understand how someone can be that obsessed with "gotta get it all"... like when a game comes out and has different pre-order bonuses at different stores, and "OMG, they're FORCING me to buy six copies of their game!!!1!1!one!" threads pop up. I just have to facepalm at the utter insanity of statements like that.

Also "Star Wars Galaxies" ... afaik there were no limited-time rewards, at all ... so I'm not sure to which Korean Asia Grinder everyone is refering to ...
