Its also scary, seems like this pointless rage is abundant online. You can see it in forums, game chat, news comment sections...blogs etc.
Theres a lot of anger in society today. But it appears more often then not, in an online environment. Where someone feels protected by anonymity.

being a faceless keyboard warrior doesnt give you the right do unimaginable evil, besides most isps have the ability to track you anyway, and police can get court orders to violate your internet privacy if its deemed to be in the best interests of an investigation to fit the circumstances, not even virtual isps can ignore regulations and they monitor activity as well, if by law they are ordered to give up their information, there is not a lot they can do to hide your exploits, both legal and illegal.

a lot of keyboard warriors/trolls/whatever else fail to realize how easy it is to be found out from their anonymous status in todays internet culture. so you got all these false personalities floating around. the great irony in all of this is that everyone here for the most part are using nicknames, myself included and its a hypocritical thing that we do when we argue about it and forget our place as to how we get the message across fully.

at this point i will cut it short from a self defense stance in an attempt to explain myself because no one cares, and if anyone else did the same nor would i care.

Lordy I'm glad to be over here this week.

The grass isn't greener here, it's that cheap indoor-outdoor patio carpet that we're told is grass...and it's more bluish than green.
    Meh.

Really? REALLY?!? You're okay with a man and his entire family having their lives placed in danger because of a stupid issue involving a video game???

I... I just don't... If I facepalmed myself half hard enough to express my disgust and confusion, I'd get a concussion.

You are not facepalming hard enough. The only facepalm that sufficiently expresses the disgust of this action would result in a black hole being created due to overcoming the various forces that make matter exist. Of course, such a facepalm can only be done once since it would destroy the Earth.

The nerdrage is strong, in the manchild community of SWTOR.

And that is a severely gross understatement on my part.

Banning a forum account does not really mean much if you have 7 other forum accounts you can use. When anyone can simply make a gmail account and create a new forum account in a minute it is difficult to enforce forum banning. I have seen it on this forum many times: someone gets banned and nerd raged back on with another account to yell at the Dev for banning them.

At the end of the day if you are going to allow FTP players to post on your forum you are going to end up with a lot of multiple accounts and no real way to enforce against them. You can initiate an ISP ban but that paints with a wide brush and can lock-out innocent people. And then you have all the Smartphone/Tablet users who can have multiple ISPs.

Well, the thing is to post on the SWToR forums you HAVE to have an active subscription; so it would work in EA/BioWare's situation in that unless the person banned REALLY wanted to grind that axe, it's unlikely he's create a new account and re-sub just to continue posting a rant or worse only to get banned again.

For Cryptic/PWE, the situation would be worse in that yes, a person banned could just create a new free account and even continue posting on the Tech support areas (as I believe Cryptic/PWE either requires a certain $ amount of purchase or the account be active for a certain time period before full posting rights are conferred.

Again, as someone who have often given the STO Dev team a lot of flak when I think they've done something I find really negative (of course I also give them Kudos when I like something too - thus as a result many here often had called me a member of the Cryptic Defense Force); attacking them on their personal non-work accounts and further actually threatening and harassing them (and their family members) SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN - PERIOD! Further anyone that condones or think that such behavior is either understandable, or justified, need serious mental help.

In the end, we're talking about games; and NOTHING in a game is worth injuring anyone physically in the real world. If you're really upset about a change you have every right to cancel you sub/stop paying for/buying anything further in said game; and moving on to something else you find enjoyable. You NEVER have a 'right' to truly harass/threaten ANYONE outside of a game (and especially not family members of friends.)

Personally, I hope the fringe that was responsible for that type of thing over in the SWToR community does get traced and prosecuted to the full extent of the law; and I'd call for the same full legal prosecution response if anything rose to that level here and was perpetrated by fringe members of the STO forum community.

Actually Cryptic allows you to post in any thread. You simply cannot create a new thread unless you have either spent Zen - even if it is Dilithum Exchange Zen - or been on the forum a certain amount of time. This is why you see so many noobs posting in Zombie threads - they want to talk about the particular subject but cannot make a thread of their own.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Someone should post something on the SWTOR forum, about how we're debating the whole fiasco here on STO forums........

Or would that be trolling ? :p
Really though, reading through this is another reminder to myself, to not be an idiot online.

I've had a couple really stupid posts here.
I apologize if I've offended anyone.

It isn't that today's society is more mean-spirited, it's that it's easier for once-isolated communities to see what other communities are doing. It seems like there's more danger in society because in the past actions like that taken against the TOR dev in the OP link would have been known only to a small group. The internet, and globalisation as a whole, means that we see more of this anti-social behaviour - the internet gives us ready access to it - but in reality the balance between social and anti-social behaviour hasn't changed all that much, we simply hear about the anti-social behaviour more.

Or as Spider Robinson once put it, we finally got the communications system working here on Spaceship Earth - of course it's going to be dominated by damage reports for a while.

    It's a joke, Jon.

You did see the :P at the end, didn't you?

You should know better then to have a knee-jerk reaction, especially to something posted here of all places.

Hrmm, outside of the threats and all... the replies to that John guy's thread seemed pretty tame compared to what goes on around here. At one point Smirk was talking martial law things had gotten so out of hand and he was pissed off at the attacks on the devs...Trendy's likely to decapitate some folks with her Baco'leth if things keep up. Cause Hell, there have been folks talking about burning down the Cryptic offices, the one really stupid guy that made the bomb threat, etc, etc, etc...folks just be crazy...the grass here isn't really any greener. Though, maybe today. :D

That's what happens when you let Bajorans in...They don't get what they want, and they go nuts.

i doubt anyone over there would care.

its a different mindset over there then it is here. i mean over here its mostly respectful but people can show their fists and teeth when they need to, occasionally getting a little over their own heads in the process, but no where near to the point it happens over in the tor forum. besides this forum is got better policing then you get in the tor forum so things remain in good standing for the most part.

if you were on tor you need to mind your own business, there are some serious trolls on that and sometimes it gets out of control to the point somone has to step in and shut the thread down or until it burns itself out. it has happened in the past and it may happen again. and their support section of their forum is another beast entirely, heavily moderated, however it receives the most threads and a heck of a lot of the threads remain unanswered, especially the critical constructive ones. no game is perfect.
