So, currently, I'm making moves to prepare for the next ship sale (we all know one is coming
eventually), during which I will get a T6 D'deridex. Because D'deridex.
Anyhoo... I intend to use the "IRW" prefix, and I think I will theme this ship loosely around the idea of "the last outpost of the Star Empire." Again, because D'deridex. In short, this means weapon theme!
What is the "canonical" energy weapon type of the RSE? Judging by the Tal Shiar ships in-game, the sound FX in-game, and what little I read on Memory Alpha... it
isn't plasma. So, that leaves Nanite disruptors or plasma-disruptor hybrids.
Any thoughts/consensus?

The RSE in STO still does. Which makes the recent ground Imperial Romulan Navy Ground Set interesting. Because the kit part of the set boosts Plasma, not Disruptor.
I found that a little interesting, too... although, not surprising, since it also came with that plasma-based kit module.
The more interesting thing is... Romulan disruptors, according to canon, leave a residual antiproton trace. Translate that to our in-game understanding: they're disruptors with the antiproton proc (innate CrtD?). According to STOWiki, those weapons don't exist in the game.
Interesting possibility for a future weapon type... although, I highly doubt they'd use "Romulan" in the weapon title, and they'd probably make them in some fugly color. :P
Well, antiproton is red, and disruptor is green, so . . . Brown lazors of death!!!
As for the OP question, I think disruptors would be a good fit. Nanite Disruptors, Polarized Disruptors, standard Disruptors, Bio-molecular Disruptors. They all look the same visually.
LOL
I think I'm going to go with Nanite Disruptors... mainly because I have them, and I like them.
That's a good choice I use those too. The main reason iirc that was given for the Republic using plasma was to distinguish them from the Romulan star empire and the Klingon empire, and not having all 3 of those factions using disruptors. I'd have to look up the podcast though.
Glad to see another I.R.W. Ship in game!

Even better... use Plasma-style animations, with a green beam and red "lightning" sheathing. Death by Christmas!
Before you rush to get the tier 6 D'deridex, know that they haven't added the I.R.W. prefix for it as a option yet sadly.

WUT.
That probably won't stop me from buying it (waiting for the next ship sale), but... that needs to get fixed!!!
Is it true for both the T6 and Fleet T6 versions?
It also used photon torpedoes, though later TNG-era shows said that Romulans used Plasma torpedoes. More stuff that Trek writers were inconsistent about.
Note that if you were to read the D'khellra's fluff in the shipyard, it is specifically stated to be a Republic project to upgrade the venerable D'deridex.
Also, the Romulan disruptor weapons from frozen have the antiproton residue.

It is a RESIDUE. An antiproton residue does not make it an antiproton weapon.
So the RSE flies by and ****s over everything. Sounds legit.
Disruptors with the AP proc would certainly be fun though.
RR: Romulan Plasma. Plasma with a disruptor proc,...
This is what I use and is the most "canon" of whats readily available in game.
Personally, I would go with the Bio-Molecular disruptor for a "traditional Romulan build". While it may not be "canon" it is a disruptor and the proc is better and more useful than the Nanite one. Though you do need T4 Counter COmmand Rep for them.

That's because until about TNG season 4 Klingon and Romulan weapons were always referred to as "Phasers" onscreen.
TOS "Errand of Mercy" Kirk says "Those are Klingon Phasers", Korris in TNG "Heart or Glory" supposedly used a Phaser according to Tasha Yar, the IKS Pagh in TNG "A Matter of Honor" was also armed with Phasers if we believe the dialogue and so was the sleepership IKS T'Ong in "TNG The Emissary".
Either those were all mysitcally armed with phasers or, as someone else on the forums once said, it's just shorthand for "energy weapon".:)
I can't say yes or not to that with absolut certainty.
The only instances in season 3 where I can remember Klingon and Romulan referrred to they kept it unclear. They were only called "weapons" or "energy weapons" there. But hey no instances of Klingon or Romulan phasers that's already a good thing.:)
The first time I know for certain where those weapons were called disruptors was "Redeption" part 1.
*digs through transcript of "The Enemy"*
TOMALAK [on viewscreen]: You forced the situation. I will not leave without him.
PICARD: He's dead.
TOMALAK [on viewscreen]: Then he is but the first to fall, Picard.
(Transmission ends)
WORF: The Romulan ship is routing power to its forward disruptor array.
PICARD: All shields to maximum.
WORF: Aye, sir.
PICARD: Lock phasers on target.
[stuff happens]
TOMALAK [on viewscreen]: You doubt my good faith?
PICARD: Let's just say my faith would be strengthened by a gesture from you, such as powering down your disruptors.
WORF: Disruptors powering down.
PICARD: Thank you. Cancel Red alert, Lieutenant. Commander, we shall return your officer and escort your ship to the Neutral Zone.
Yup you're right it's there. Thank you. Season 3 it is then.:)
