all I know is that I cant even play at this point. it takes a very long time to log into the game. and then if I get in game. I get kicked off afther a few mins.
This is my user "experience" so far today (11:30 AM Monday 4/13/15):
- Launch the game (via steam)
- Wait about a minute for the dialog to completely render so the user can enter the password. Click Login.
- The dialog re-renders itself and provides a "Attempting to connect to controller tracker.." message
- Wait about 2-3 minutes for the patcher to decide nothing needs to be patched and renders the ENGAGE button. Click ENGAGE.
- Wait about 2-3 minutes for the character selection screen to render and allow the user to select a character. Click Play.
- Wait about 1 minute for the login to timeout (Login2_Timeout failure tag) and dump the user to the Login screen.
- The user enters the password again. Click Login.
- Wait about a minute for the character selection screen to render. Select a character and click Play.
- Wait about a minute to get disconnected and dumped to the Login screen.
- The user enters the password again. Click Login.
- Wait about a minute for character selection screen to render. Select character, click Play.
- Wait about a minute and get the Login2_Timeout failure, get punted tot he Login screen.
- Enter password, wait for the character selection screen to render, select character, click Play.
- Wait about a minute and get the Login2_Timeout failure, get punted tot eh Login screen.
- Click Exit
I never even reached the state where I could see a Login Queue so I could complain about that instead. This is fairly serious and will weigh heavily on how long I persist so I can offload gear to friends and fleetmates before I give up on this game forever.

umm sounds like your computer sucks from this... the launcher shouldnt take but maybe a couple seconds to popup, and maybe 5 before you can click engage(at worst)
that whole process takes me maybe 30 seconds total including typing my password and clicking engage
edit:
and if this is new behavior on your computer I suggest its time to very aggressively and thoroughly scan and clean it
so it's either DR is the best event ever and tons of folks are flooding back...
or the population dropped so low that they reallocated servers to other games or sunset the old ones and never replaced... so if the population goes back up...

I need to agree with the person your replied to. On a normal day my launcher acts as you described. The patch check is so fast it is a flicker on the way to engage. But when the servers are lagging or misbehaving then it takes a while to do everything.

Login Queues have been in game since before I can remember. Just a bunch of people playing STO now. "game is dead" hah.
or it could be that after the catastrophic crash the other day (which is when the queues started) they are down a server cause it just gave up... thus making it look like more players, when in actuality, it is likely that equipment malfunctioned and the same amount of people are playing that were before the crash...
that is a lot more likely... as I don't see a few weeks after a release being busier than at the launch of it..

I logged in this yesterday (as a FTP player), at 564th in the queue to play. Whilst mildly irked (mainly at the fact I had to wait in line between every character change). I did think "well at least I know that many people at the very least are waiting to play the game, good".
I've spent tons on this game over the years however I have never managed to sub or get a lifetime sub so I'm not worried overtly for having to wait in line, simply because I never fulfilled the requirement to be further on. And again it makes me happy to know that many people are not just playing the game but waiting to play it.
"If this will be our end, then I will have them make SUCH an end as to be worthy of rememberance! Out of torpedos you say?! Find me the ferengi!".
Yeah this isn't something new. You just don't see it unless there is too many people trying to play. Last time I saw it was when LoR launched.
Surprise to see it now. Didn't realize Delta Recruitment was that much of a draw.
Inaccurate. The queue is for the login *portal* which goes to all of the games like Neverwinter, Champions, etc.
It doesn't mean anything one way or another concerning STO, just that people are trying to get into Cryptic's games. Neverwinter just had an expansion. It can just as easily be that as new players to STO.

not true. i played co all weekend and never had a login queue pop up until i switched over to sto. what happens in sto has nothing to do with what happens in co and nw.
I have no statistics to prove that though and neither do you.

I was just stating a fact. With a harsh tone, but still a fact.
No, you were stating opinion, you even say you don't have numbers to back you up.
Let's play with some numbers, since you brought it up. Someone who has taken a statistics class more recently than I can probably make this more accurate, but here goes:
We have reports in this thread that the queue was as high as 500, so Queue=Q=500 players
We are also in this thread told that when queues happen, the player count according to Steam peaks out at 3600, so Steam Players=S=3600 players
As a LTS, I don't sit through the whole queue, but the general actual wait time I was seeing reported was "under 30 seconds" so we'll go with that upper number of Wait Time=W=0.5 min
The rate at which players are signing out of characters can be figured by dividing the number of players waiting in line by how long they wait: Rate of Leaving=L=Q/W=1000 players per min
(Using the stated place I was in line and the amount of time I actually waited, this number holds true.)
How much time do players spend on a character? If I am just cycling through, filling DOff/crafting/Rep projects, I spend about 5 mins per character, but if I'm working on leveling a toon, I spend at least 30 mins, usually quite a bit more. Just to pull a number we can use, let's say 15 mins per toon spent for leveling, DOffing, etc. Time Played=T=15 min
(I really think the number that'd be more realistic is at least twice this, but I don't want to pad...)
The rate at which the players sign out of their toons can be expressed as the number of players divided by playtime: Total Rate of Leaving=Lt=P/T
Therefore: P=Lt*T
If we assume that, statistically, the total rate players leave the game is the same rate we calculated based on queue size and wait time, the total active players can be calculated as: P=L*T=(1000 players per min)*(15 min)=15000 players
15000>3600
The numbers reported by Steam are a small fraction of the actual playerbase, and since, as I stated in my last post on the matter, it is common sense that the playerbase more dedicated to the game are not using Steam, the Steam numbers, by nature, represent a much more transient population anyways.
I also believe that the numbers I used are the figures thaat would minimize the actual number of players.
What facts were you stating, again? Oh, that's right, you don't have any numbers...

They already did this...
..., which is why this is causing issues.
