If true, I wonder if this will affect STO and other Cryptic games...

While PWE owns Crytpic it does not mean anyone working at Crytpic is getting laid off. If Crytpic is making money they don't need layoffs. While if PWE is struggling with its games it might. It all comes dow to what each of them need to be successful.

I hope the top-heavy management at PWE gets the axe. For all the criticism I give to Smirk and Trendy, I can't blame the people at the bottom of the food chain. They deserve to keep their jobs. They are actually the ones doing work.

Most of PWE's management is the fat that needs to get cut to make for a leaner company and encourage growth. They don't do anything except reap the rewards made by people like Trendy and Smirk.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Most of Cryptic's problems lie with PWE. Most of PWE's problems lie with the people at the top. Not the people we deal with on the forums.

And yes, I fully expect Trendy to close this thread too. It speaks volumes that our community managers spend more time trying to put out these rumor mill fires than they do speaking honestly and openly about the issues that players care about for their titles.

    Res ipsa loquitur.

Don't forget about possible NDA's pushed onto employees, it happens.

It happens. Does it need to happen? Yes. Is there a point where NDA's become a sword instead of a shield? Yes.

There is a fine line between NDA and Gag Order. PWE has made it their policy to blur that line as much as possible.

how would you know? cryptic logic doesnt work as intended to typical logic, assuming the cryptic arm got hit with layoffs.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

Matt Miller , former lead designer on City of Heroes , most recently a content(?) designer for STO. (Did the new Tutorials Klingon and Fed side -pretty sure-) .

    There you go.
    It affects STO.

One Matt Miller is worth Ten Al Riveras.
    And he got laid off.
Bets on who we see next ?

    Smirk, Miller .....

    No way that's all

Well reading through the comments on the original article on MMORPG it looks like there's another rumour about Smirk being canned as well.

WOW!!! I'm kinda' shocked.

Matt Miller was probably one of the best assets this half-arsed company ever had. This is their loss completely and believe me, they'll feel this loss soon enough. Miller.....wow, I'm still half-speachless. Really loved his work. :(

And hippiejon, to say a Matt Miller is worth 10 Riveras is a gross understatement. There's no real way to measure the difference between awesomness and utter fail.

At the same time, I'm kinda happy for Matt (although getting laid-off and potentially losing your livelyhood even temporarily is never a good thing) - I hope now he'll get the chance to be hired by a proper company that will apreciate the talent he brings to the table instead of working for the clown of the gaming industry.

I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and employment Mr.Miller, you are one of the people I respected and apreciated most in this company. You'll be missed around here. Wind in the sails.

Hrmmm, I hate the instability that the one suggests. Cause have seen that #1 gone, #2 becomes #1, so #2 decides to go down the road when the chance presents itself rather than being the next #1 gone.

Hrmmm, I hate what the other one suggests...as far as the future of the game itself.

The first suggests clueless management. The second suggests a chronic demise.

Redundancies are a fact of life within any company regardless of who or what they are. .

A company can still be making money and still have to lay off people.

Just cause there is job cuts does not mean doom. . .

Yes, in companies with redundancies those redundancies are usually seen by some bean counter and the fat trimmed. In companies that scream out that they're understaffed though...

    It can still happen.

Restructuring a company to make it more profitable in the areas it needs to be can lead to lay off else where regardless of staffing levels etc.

Cutting off the healthy right arm to save the diseased left arm...is the wisdom espoused by a business mentality that grew out of the 80s and into the 90s. That hasn't done so well in general except for the few individuals involved in the flip.

What pisses me off here is that while STO may (or may not) have redundant position, CO is heavily understaffed. And Positron becoming a CO designer would have been amazingly good publicity. They could have just transferred him over - hell, he probably could have telecommuted, if he didn't want to move to Seattle.

    Instead, he's laid off???

Even a Picard facepalm isn't enough here...

Smirk is no longer appearing on the dev tracker ... i hope I'm wrong cause he seemed like he was going to start taking STO in the right direction, but it looks like he may be gone ... wonder who the new EP would be if that's the case?

Smirk wasn't the Executive Producer - that's Steve Ricossa aka Salamiinferno.

    Smirk was the Community Manager

Smirk is (or was, I don't have confirmation about his position atm) the Community Manager for STO, not the EP. The new EP is Stephen "SalamiInferno" Ricossa that replaced D'Angelo few weeks ago.

Screwed up then, still Smirk was a good guy, to see him get the axe over some others would be shocking. Next to Taco he's one of the few that actually seemed to care about the players.

Judging that his twitter has gone personal and from what trendy has been almost saying (reading between the lines) I would say he

    He has... GONE :(

I WANT to know what's going on man this sucks OK we won't hear the ins and outs but we need to know what's going on for the sake of the game if nothing else..

So pls can someone at STO please let us all know what is going on.

Well, let's wish Smirk a fun time in his post PWE era vacations. Layoffs suck, and it's all because over in China, they're seeing low margins on US based games like STO.
