Yeah, I guess I don't have much experience. I may have just had my first date without realizing it, actually.

Yeah, I agree that Neelix wasn't a paedo and that Kes was an adult...I'm just saying that when I am reminded that the hot elf chick in the tight outfit who's dating the hedgehog is one, I have an instinctive, unconscious reaction of revulsion.

Intellectually I recognize that Kes wasn't a child. Subconsciously, hearing that she is X single-digit age creeps me out.
Keep focussing on the intellectual aspect, and eventually the subconscious might catch up... :)

    Hopefully...Nurture over nature, eh? ;)

So, you're humanocentric. It's not uncommon, and in fact it's one of the things leading to values dissonance between the Moab Confederacy and the Federation in the Masterverse stories - the "child soldiers" were able to enlist because at the time they were a Klingon protectorate, and by Klingon standards they were of age.

Their biology, however, remained human, which comes with some cold, hard facts associated with it, when it comes to physiological and psychological maturity. (And frankly, IRL, evidence actually suggests that in both of these regards, 21 comes closer to appropriate than 18, especially in modern technological society and that a more graduated increase in rights from 18 to 21 ought to be in order.)

Oh...and worffan, Berat hasn't forgotten Ssharki's self-serving hypocrisy when it came to the Moabites. Suddenly the issue wasn't a "real" one when it brought the potential for criticism to Ssharki's own doorstep...

Well, I hope to see more of Berat soon.

The main reason that I let Ssharki off the hook was that he reacted with obvious rage at the end of Faces to the continued use of child soldiers when it was brought to his attention. Given that his son was a child soldier, I can see why he had to restrain himself from becoming...violent. As violent as he became towards those tomatoes in Let Hope Burn.

Which reminds me that I want to see more Ssharki, too...

He did initially but as soon as the discussion got serious he realized he had to cover his behind fast before he came under rightful scrutiny...and tried to force Berat not to press the point by making it so the only way to stick to his guns was to publicly call Ssharki a bad father. Very manipulative trick, that. Of course Jesu saw that headed nowhere good, and smartly broke it up before it could really explode, but yeah...

(Oh, and even more "fun": as it turns out, Ssharki could have ended his sons' service at any time once they became his wards. Berat didn't know that little tidbit at the time...but yeah, won't help his impression if he finds out later. ;) )

FYI this is nothing sander doesn't know I think. And yeah, Ssharki is well written, but definitely a big blind spot there. Kinda along the lines of Alyosha being big against racism but presented with another Devidian pretty much will go straight to death threats or shots fired (pretty much, "You refused my offer? DIE.")

Heh, and my mains are (a) a Romulan with extreme PTSD and the shortest fuse in the known universe who has gone multiple days without eating to obsess over revenge, and (b) a malfunctioning living weapon who tortures people to death just because it can and obeys frankly arbitrary rules.

Omek'ti'kallan is stable and generally a good guy, but...

I think that all of our characters are screwed up in some way. :D

Okay, I know I'm in the minority for this opinion, but I actually didn't mind Neelix that much. Granted, his perpetual cheerfulness was annoying, agreed, but the way I see it, that's because he was constantly making the effort to be cheerful. He was separated from his people and alone among a bunch of strangers, but instead of letting any of that get to him, he instead did his best to not only be outwardly optimistic, but to also make the Voyager's crew (who were even more lost and alone than he was) feel a little better about themselves.

I'm not saying it worked, of course, but I could see that's what he was going for.

EDIT: Oh wait, that's been mentioned already. And refuted, with expected vehemence, by worffan.

    Oh well, I tried.

And Kes' biology remained Ocampan, which meant, ridiculous as it may have been from a scientific standpoint, she was physically and emotionally mature (well, as mature as an Ocampan gets) at the age of 1. Neelix's (and Tom's) attraction to her was only squicky from a Human point of view.
