Many of us like cool headcanon and are proud of it. Let us compare our stories!
My toons:
V'Mar joined Starfleet in 2352 and served on the USS South Carolina for five years as a tactical officer, he married T'Vrell, the SC's science officer who returned to Vulcan to start a family. V'Mar commanded the USS Pegasus in the Dominion war and fought in the forefront of the war, he survived the Battle of Tyre and was in the vanguard at the Battle of Cardassia. He asended through the ranks but kept the Pegasus as his flagship all that time. He welcomed his son Ser'ol to his crew as the ships intelligence officer. And he was Ja'rod's secret contact during the Klingon-Gorn war.
R'Tath was born and raised on Romulus in a promonent family. He was freinds with Tovan Khev (suck it Khev haters!) for a long time, he and his brother Hanril (a modified Hiven) and his sisters Anitra (a modified Satra) and Tiva'raau made it off Romulus at the last minute however R'Tath was injured and he continues to wear the scars to this day. His family helped settle Virinat and they were reunited with the Khev's. R'Tath has started a family with Rinna Khev. Anitra was a medic in the IRF but has rejoined her family
Shanara is the daughter of Thotok (a toon I plan to make in the future) of the house of Koloth. She has served her house and the empire all her life. Jurlek was once her commanding officer because their houses were allied at the time. Dang... I hoped she'd have more backstory... oh well I cant wait to hear what you guys have.

-What: Admiral Melati Kusumu is a Starfleet engineer officer. She usually flies an Odyssey(USS Doom Serpent), but occasionally flies a Galaxy-X(USS Norman).
-Who: Admiral Kusumu is a an Orion/Kriosian hybrid. She's a refugee for political reasons, but loyal to the Federation.
-Threat: She's more of an asset than a threat. Like most Orions, she's not one to let principles get in the way of what needs to be done.
File 007002 - Beltran
-What: General Beltran is an Orion tactical officer who has been seen commanding the IKS Dlasoh(a Chel Grett) and the IKS SovwI Zoey(a Vorcha).
-Who: Beltran is an Orion marauder. He does what the Empire asks, as long as he gets to pillage from it's enemies.
-Threat: While he poses a threat to the Federation, that threat is marginalized by his ambivalence to who he pillages from.
File 007003 - Meghan Eridian
-What: Admiral Eridian is a science officer who flies the USS Rachel-B(Nebula).
-Who: Eridian is a Vorta from the Mirror universe. However, in some ways she seems to be similar to a Vorta Augment. Apparently she was experimented on by the Terran Empire, and thus has certain abilities, such as Telepathy, that other Vorta lack. She seems to be a capable officer, if a bit blood thirsty at times.
-Threat: As a being of partially unknown origin, it's hard to be sure of her loyaties, but she hasn't displayed any sort of alternate loyalties. She has an active dislike for the Terran Empire, evne though in some wys she acts like them.
-What: Tetin is an Andorian science officer who flies an Ambassador class ship.
-Who: Little is known about this enigmatic figure. We have verified reports of her having visited almost everywhere in the Federation and beyond. But only rarely has she actually been SEEN in any of those places.
-Threat: While she seems to be loyal to the Federation, her nebulous nature makes her untrustworthy. Also I'd love to know how she can go in public without being seen... ever. Apparently she once walked right past an operative who didn't even notice her presence.
File 007005 - Chuft
-What: Chuft is a tactical officer who flies the USS Traitor's Fangs, an MVAE.
-Who: While his official record claims he's a Caitian, Chuft is actually a Kzinti. It's not clear exactly why he hates Klingons, but he hates them enough to be willing to join Starfleet so that he can make their lives miserable..... and short. Chuft is apparently fond of eating his enemies.
-Threat: Chuft is a potential loose cannon. He does what he's supposed to.... for now. But it's hard to say how long this situation will last.
File 007006 - Drexela
-What: Drexela is a Starfleet engineer who flies the D'kyr class VSS Moldavian.
-Who: Drexela is a rare case of a Trill becoming Joined after being removed from the Collective. Aside from that, she's not particularly interesting.
-Threat: An alternate timeline version of her known as "Drexela Tilo" was a mercenary who merely worked for Starfleet instead of being a proper Starfleet officer. The exact specifics of that situation are unknown, but the main version ahs not displayed similar tendancies.
File 007007 - 7 of 13
-What: 7 of 13 is a Starfleet tactical officer and the commander of the USS Breen is Futile(a Chel Grett).
-Who: The official record mentions that he is a Liberated Borg, but doesn't go into detail on the race. Most assume he's human simply because he looks like one. However he is actually an advanced cyborg called a "Terminator".
-Threat: I'm not sure whether it's good or bad that his original programming was corrupted beyond repair... However the "restoration" of his programming left him loyal to the Federation. While curious about his origin, I'm not looking forward to meeting whoever built him.
File 007008 - Monica Rappaccini
-What: Admiral Rappaccini is a human Starfleet engineer who flies the U.S.S. L.A.N.L.(a Chimera).
-Who: Her family has a history of wierd scientific endeavors, and she's no exception. She has done experiments in cybernetically enhancing herself. The results are somewhat unimpressive, but safer than use of Borg tech.
-Threat: she could be realistically called a mad scientist. It's possible that she got a commision only because the admiralty was worried about what she might do if she didn't find a productive use for her talents....
File 007009 - Carnlan Rixx
-What: Admiral Rixx is a Bolian science officer who commands the USS Friesland(a Chel Grett).
-Who: Aside from a fondness for exotic technology, he's a pretty typical Starfleet officer.
-Threat: none, unless he tries something that backfires....
File 007010 - Sekkoth
-What: Admiral Sekkoth is a Starfleet tactical officer who flies the Congo(an Obelisk).
-Who: The official record only mentions his Vulcan parentage, but some of Sekkoth's recent ancestors were Romulans. But aside from that he's a rather typical officer.
-Threat: Aside from the obvious, none.
File 007011 - Emani
-What: The only thing know for sure about this figure is that she's a Liberated Borg Klingon engineer. There are unconfirmable reports that she flies an Orion carrier.
-Who: Emani apparently works in the applied theoretical physics department of the Klingon Empire in a parallel timeline.
-Threat: If she ever turns up in our timeline, she could pose a serious problem. In her timeline, she masterminded an attack on Vulcan that began with hijacking the Transwarp relay in orbit of Pluto. I still haven't managed to wrap my head around HOW she did it... all the explanations start with "it's impossible unless...." and end with something that goes over my head. Anyone that smart would be a serious threat to the security of the Federation if she existed in this timeline.
File 007012 - Diaula
-What: Diaula is a Romulan science officer who commands the RRW Vassam(a T'Varo)
-Who: Diaula is apparently one of those Romulans who took the loss of Romulus very badly. She has a giant tattoo that covers most of her face.
-Threat: She's more of an ally than a threat.
File 007013 - Emani
-What: Emani is a Liberated Borg Romulan engineer who flies a D'Deridex named RRW G'Anohok.
-Who: Liberated Borg Romulans are surprisingly common, but this one has proven herself in combat many times over.
-Threat: Emani is an ally of the Empire. As such she's a threat, but only when the Empire's interests conflict with ours.
File 007014 - Soheth
-What: Admiral Soheth is a tactical officer in the Romulan Republic who flies a Mogai named RRW Rovaren.
-Who: Not much is known about this individual. There is some evidence that Soheth might be at least part Garidian, but her precise origin is unknown. It is known that she has psionic powers though.
-Threat: Minor. While she is largely an unknown, Soheth has not demonstrated any hostility to the Federation as yet.
Two of my captains, Sills (a Vice Admiral these days) and Sajak (I'd retired the character, then he was killed as a side note in Chapter 1 of "Rule 88"), were young officers together aboard USS Northwestern, a Miranda. After their captain was killed in battle, Sills assumed command of the Northwestern; Sajak served as his first officer for a time, until being offered command of the Seahawk. The Human and Vulcan had developed a fairly close friendship during their early days, and often communicated over hyperwave comm between their ships. In the current era, Sills recently transferred his flag from the Hans Asperger, a prototype Odyssey, to the George Romero, one of the Samsar-class cruisers that are an early result of the Alliance's cooperation with the Kobali. (Although, having experienced the events of "Dust to Dust", Sills is trying to push the Alliance toward a more neutral position - the Vaadwaur aren't the "good guys" by any means, but the Kobali aren't exactly blameless victims here either.)

Short versions:
-Krystal Jade: Earned her first command when the Borg attacked Vega Colony (Old Tutotial), never showed interested in being Joined, earned the nickname Rattler for popping up when least expected, and if it weren't for the spots you'd swear she was human and not Trill.
-Roll Cas'ket: Spunky, short Orion woman with a "Birth Defect" preventing her from producing pheramones. Sister of KDF officer Fali Cas'ket. Currently in command of the U.S.S. Caliburn, a "vintage" modified Gryphon class Fleet Patrol Escort.
-"Blaze the Cat" M'Ress: Bit of a Pyro, hence the nickname. Was named after an officer who served aboard Enterprise in the 23rd Century.
-Ashe Taln: Broke a family tradition of Andorian Imperial Military service by joining Starfleet.
-Saria Kiri: Looks Romulan, but is actually a Kokiri, and willing to fight to protect others. Allied with the Federation.
-Fali Cas'ket: Orion female KDF Officer/Mercenary. Wouldn't fire on her sister if forced into a confrontation while the war was going on.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

I've explored my captains' backstories in my fan fiction here in Ten Forward, but here's summaries.
Kanril Eleya (Fed tac, Bajoran female, CO, USS Bajor, Galaxy-class) enlisted in the Bajoran Militia out of high school, and was trained as a naval gunnery technician. She held the rank of sergeant (E-5) when the Chamber of Ministers shut down the Militia Space Arm in 2401; her CO obtained for her a transfer to Starfleet and admission to officer candidate school, where she majored in naval weapons. She graduated in '03 and was weapons officer on the USS Kagoshima when the Borg hit Vega.
Brokosh (KDF engi, Lethean male, CO, IKS HoSbatlh, Tor'Kaht-class) was born on an independent colony and attended Sirhas State University on Capella, majoring in construction engineering. He parlayed this into a fairly lucrative career as a combat engineer for various private military contractors, and was with Hanson's Harriers when he met Lady Ba'wov, a member of a cadet branch of the Klingon House of Chel'tok who was then working as chief engineer of a freighter. They fell in love, married over the objections of her grandfather the head of House, and when she got pregnant he signed with the KDF to help make ends meet.
Morgaiah ir'Sheratan t'Thavrau (RRF sci, Romulan female, CO, RRW Bloodwing, D'deridex-class) was born into the Romulan political class, a member of a cadet branch of Hfihar s'Thavrau (the House, or Line, of Thavrau) and grand-niece to a senator. Her mother worked as a senior Senate staffer and she suspects that she's the illegitimate daughter of one of the various senators for whom Iliana t'Thavrau worked. She attended the Phi'lasasam (Imperial Fleet Academy), majoring in physics and botany, but ended up transferring to command track during the civil war in the early 2380s after she took the helm of IRW Albintian when the conn officer was killed in a skirmish with the forces loyal to Donatra. Hobus killed her entire family, and she was then forced to flee from the Tal'Shiar and hide out among Romulan refugees, eventually ending up on Virinat where she gained a strong reputation as an ale brewer and vintner.

Ael i-Ra'tleihfi Janicka t'Kazanak Hvei'khenn is the only child of active stellar cartographers, Sulleen tr'Kazanak and Verelan t'Kazanak. Ael was born in 2375 aboard their survey ship, the IRSS Ralaar'nevnilai {literal translation: sky walker} during it's return to Romulus, and her place of birth is often assumed as being the place where her birth was first officially declared and registered: the spaceport of the Romulan capital Ra'tleihfi. She was born into an influential and long established clan dating back to the time of the Sundering, and as such is an heir of ancestral titles. Due to her parents' careers, Ael spent much of her childhood moving from outpost to outpost, although her parents returned to Romulus annually, when her father and uncle, Salis tr'Kazanak, would take her to the Valley of Chula to teach her bushcraft. Often spending much time in near isolation aboard the Ralaar'nevnilai, she learned to make new friend's quickly, developing an outgoing and amenable personality which swiftly ingratiated her with any new peer group. Her private personal name, Hvei'khenn {literal translation: Storm} is known to very few people. Ael was with her parents when the Hobus Event destroyed Romulus, as they were assigned to observe the event for historical archives. With no home world or ancestral lands, the titles of Ael's clan became meaningless affectations, which her parents immediately discarded. Rather than joining other refugees who settled on Virinat, her mother had a grand-uncle living on Vulcan, so the family settled in ShiKahr, and her parents were offered positions with the Vulcan Science Academy as experts in their field. After several years on Vulcan, the family was granted Federation citizenship.Ael considers herself foremost a Federation citizen, despite her Romulan heritage, and is a devout follower of its tenets and founding principles. After attending Starfleet academy, she passed the MACO Selection process, spending a further two years the West Point campus for Advanced Tactical Training.
Upon completion of ATT, Ael was promoted to Lieutenant, and has served aboard the following ships: the Intrepid class USS Kaitain under Captain Christian Hill, as replacement for the onwardly promoted chief of security, the Sovereign class and later Odyssey class USS Endeavour, under Captain Nicholas Atreides as first officer (with tactical duties) and the Eaves class USS Vanguard as commanding officer.
An extremely competent and driven individual, Ael is a skilled officer who thrives in strategic encounters. Ael is frequently characterised as 'stern', and can be distrustful and suspicious of the motives of others, and does not suffer fools gladly. She is however, a supportive commander and a loyal friend. She is a keen painter, as well as enjoying chess, go, and kal toh. Standing five feet seven inches tall, Ael has dark brown hair and light grey eyes. She is a collector of body-art, and has a considerable collection of tattoos, including: Emblems of the Romulan Empire across upper shoulders and lower abdomen, Rihan script running the length of her spine reading ih'shikaen temaeko nnea ch'Rihan {intended translation: Legacy of Romulus} and her parents names in Rihan script on her outer forearms.
I've covered the backgrounds of some of my characters in exhausting - sorry, exhaustive - detail in my forum fanfic writing. But here goes....
Tylha Shohl was born on an obscure Andorian colony world, the daughter of a group of Andorian pacifists who were trying to create a new world for themselves. During her adolescence, the colony was attacked and destroyed by Nausicaan raiders; Tylha lost two of her parents and suffered serious injuries that have left scars, in more ways than one. On recovering, she decided - being of a practical turn of mind - to join the organization that did practical things to stop Nausicaan pirate raids and suchlike: Starfleet. Her practical bent saw her join the operations branch, and now she's working for the Experimental Engineering department, where her job is to take novel starship builds and field-test them in the sort of stress situations that no laboratory worker would think of.
Veronika Grau - call her Ronnie, everyone does - was born in the early 22nd century, distinguished herself in the First Romulan War, and wound up commanding an NX-class vessel in the early days of Starfleet. To wander into a timewarp once and get flipped into the future... is a misfortune; to do it a total of four times smacks of bone-headed obstinacy. In her final encounter with the temporal anomaly known as the Stygmalian Rift, Ronnie and her crew succeeded in... blowing it up, or something... turning it into a wormhole which threw her ship to the far side of the galaxy, where Ronnie herself was assimilated by the Borg. Liberated under slightly peculiar circumstances, she returned to Starfleet, where her (ahem) noticeable eccentricities don't stop her being a canny tactical commander and a formidable fighter.
T'Pia, daughter of a Vulcan academic, joined Starfleet simply because it seemed a logical thing to do. It may have been a logical decision, but it wasn't popular with her father, who's made something of a habit of questioning her career choices. Perhaps because of this, T'Pia is determinedly Vulcan in outlook and action, a student of the Kolinahr discipline, and quite unfazed in stress situations. You might almost think she was trying to prove something to dear papa, mightn't you? - but surely not, as this wouldn't be logical.
M'eioi came from a rural community on Cait, and has been longing to get her furry paws onto the deck of a starship since, well, always. Even the realities of the war, and her participation in some hot-and-heavy space battles (she was under T'Pia's command in a very nasty incident in Andorian space) haven't blighted her enthusiasm or her idealism. Both are currently being put to the test, though, as she's commanding a ship in the Delta Quadrant, a long way from home, and having to deal with various difficult decisions that might take the bloom off anybody's ideals.
Pexlini... is a Talaxian operating as an "irregular asset" for Starfleet in the Delta Quadrant. How she got to be that way, err, is something I prefer not to reveal at this point. (She has a backstory, oh yes. I've even dropped the odd hint, in the current story thread.)
T'Laihhae i-Kanai tr'Aellih was a dutiful rank-and-file Imperial Centurion until she dutifully reported a remark made by a friend of hers - and her superior officer used that as an excuse to have her friend killed. She defected from the Empire, and travelled for quite a while, along the way becoming involved in some sort of temporal incident (the details have never been made clear, and very possibly can't be), at a star system called Priyanapari. From there, she made her way to Virinat, and we all know what happened from then on.... Calling on an unusual friend she made at Priyanapari, T'Laihhae has carved out something of a niche for herself with Republic Intelligence.
Shalo is an Orion and a member of the House of Sinoom, which was on the wrong side in a power struggle among the Orions and consequently lost pretty much all of its assets. Its surviving members have fetched up in a number of odd places; Shalo herself joined the KDF and has progressed high up its ranks, on a policy of being more Klingon than the Klingons.... She is not an evil person. She is just a member of a culture that values things like material goods and artistic revenge much more than trivia like sentient rights. She has her own notions of honour, and won't willingly compromise them... but it's best not to get on her bad side, because that is a very bad place to be.
R'j Bl'k' is a member of a fierce and unpronounceable warrior race; native talent and uncompromising determination have driven her up the ranks of the KDF, to the point where she is comfortably off as a privateer captain of a captured Elachi battleship. R'j is seriously dedicated to the beliefs and rituals of her obscure species (to the point of uttering a ritual incantation every time she takes a drink). The fact that nobody else in the galaxy takes them seriously makes her all the more determined to stick to her rituals. She's also a dedicated games player, with a collection of chess-like games from many planets and cultures. If she has a fault, it's a tendency to get annoyed when real life fails to be as neat as a chess game... that, and a certain impatience with vowel users.
Rrueo is a Ferasan biologist and also a KDF warrior and a privateer captain; "driven to excel" seems to sum her up neatly. She takes a slightly sardonic and realistic view of life, which contrasts somewhat with R'j's uncompromising stance. A native telepath of some skill, she is fond of constructing elaborate metaphors for the minds she perceives. She is proud of having earned a name, and usually refers to herself in the third person because of this. While she's got some very traditional Ferasan outlooks on life, she is too smart to let herself be blinded by this - she is a wily and dangerous combatant.
D'trel's life has been...pretty tough, even for a Romulan.
She was dumped into the orphanage system of ch'Rihan shortly after her birth, grew up in the imperial regime's less-than-stellar system. Ended up living on the streets after she aged out (again, rather unpleasant). Joined the Unificationist movement in her 40s, which led her to meeting a Romulan woman named Adani, who she was engaged to...until Hakeev and his goons showed up and killed her entire group.
Which, given Romulan psychology and neurology, resulted in massive emotional trauma--being the lone survivor is not something that Rihannsu are good at.
So, after another 40-odd years of flying under the radar on an outdated warbird that nobody had bothered to mothball, she settled down on a colony world called Virinat, started off as a farmer because her mentor/best friend kept telling her to let go of the past and start over and there might just be something to that advice.
Which worked about as well as you might suspect.
So she joined the Republic because they were fighting the Tal'Shiar, hired Omek'ti'kallan because he was a good person who had skills she needed, got a ship because she scared the brass too much to refuse her (and Temer said "get that woman out there, point her at the Tal'Shiar, and get the ariennye out of the way"), elected to become a liaison officer to the KDF because the Klingons offered to help her burn the Tal'Shiar out of existence and the Feds didn't, expressed her extreme reservations when given orders to infiltrate the Tal'Shiar, infiltrated the Tal'Shiar for a couple of hours before snapping and killing 15 of them, which promptly got her captured and subjected to mind-control.
So after that little debacle, Command said "OK, we f*cked up, here's a new ship" and sent her to help Obisek. Which culminated with her killing Hakeev when he provoked her to a homocidal rage.
Currently, she's been promoted to High Admiral on the basis that anyone who can command fleets and has a track record like hers deserves a promotion. Besides, the Klingons like her, and anything that avoids making the Klingons any angrier is a good thing. And hey, she's disturbingly good at obliterating entire enemy fleets, especially when outnumbered and outgunned, and her therapist has her mostly stable and has been pulling down her medication dosage...
tl;dr: She's got decades of untreated PTSD that she's starting to recover from, but when she's not dealing with anything to do with the Tal'Shiar, she's an efficient, to-the-point officer with solid command skills, which was enough for Command to give her a promotion to an admiral's seat.
As for my other Captain, Three...she's a malfunctioning living weapon who took a wrong turn down the multiversal superhighway. Like Sergeant Schlock, Richard (Lord of Darkness), and Belkar "The Belkster" Bitterleaf, she likes to murder people.
Well, it's not really so much that Schlock likes to murder people, as that Schlock likes bright explosions and powerful weapons, and as a side effect people have a tendency to die while he plays with them, you know? After all, he's certainly loyal enough to the rest of the Toughs.
Grunt was basically outcast from Ferengi society and branded a pervert for believing that the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the balance sheet. He took up with Starfleet; eventually he wound up in command of an outdated Miranda (more or less) that was always on the verge of flying apart. Someone in Personnel didn't think a Ferengi would ever be a good captain, so they assigned all the "losers" to his ship - like Roclak, a sardonic Klingon who was discommended from the Empire for preaching peace; Vovonek, a brilliant Pakled engineer (but everyone knows the Pakled are stupid, right?); Shelana, a borderline psychopathic Andorian with homicidal tendencies, who reacts poorly to threats to the Federation in general and anything involving Undine in particular; and Dr. tr'Dalen, a Romulan medico and refugee from the remnants of the Star Empire.
Somehow, this collection of misfits has managed to distinguish themselves in a number of ships, including one cobbled together from bits and pieces found in a ship graveyard in the Gamma Quadrant (including a supercomputer from a 27th-century craft, which was essential to providing a home to Mycroft, an emergent AI that had originally been a communications intelligence (COMINT) expert system, but kept getting more and more applications added on...).
Currently they're testing another Samsar-class, USS Lestat (the name of the ship was Roclak's idea; he'd been binging on ancient Terran literature, and thought it appropriate).
This is for the first character I've had that I've given any significant thought to in quite some time, and I now think of her as being a second main alongside my fed science guy. It would have had more detail but I was typing it into the ingame character biography and ran out of space. Maybe I'll finish/re-edit it someday.
Born Valerie Brooks, "Veira" was once a colonist on the fringes of Federation territory. At the age of twelve, Veira was a part of an educational expedition to the moons of a gas giant in her world's star system. When her transport was lifting off for the return trip, raiders disabled the engines. The attackers, who were later revealed to have been funded by the Romulan government, beamed aboard wearing environmental suits and began shooting at anyone within sight.
It didn't take long for them to realize that a sizable portion of the occupants were children. An argument broke out over what they were supposed to do, which went on until someone shouted over the noise that they were on a time limit. Veira wasn't sure at the time, but she thought she recognized one of the accents from a visit to a neighboring colony.
They ultimately decided to focus their efforts on the primary task of taking the scanning equipment that was specially tuned for scanning through dense rock layers. Before leaving, it was suggested that they take one or two hostages just in case they were followed, then drop them off once clear. Two other students were chosen, causing Veira feelings of both guilt and relief. Then to her horror, one of the attackers moved at her. She tried to scurry away but with nowhere to go was pulled back by the arm. The last thing she remembered before dematerializing was the looks of her scared friends and classmates helplessly watching.
Though the other captives were released, her captor insisted on keeping her. Weeks later, Veira was sold to a Romulan who had her name changed. For the next four years she was made to learn mechanical work on some backwater world. On a day when her master was off world on business, evacuation orders were given out due to some distant extreme super nova. As very few knew of Veira's enslavement, she was free to go where she pleased. She ended up settling on a quiet farming colony where she kept a low profile, until one day...
I also have a pair of characters that I've retired, one a half Vulcan, half Betazoid who went to live with the Romulans after joining Federation relief efforts. Unknown to them, their Betazoid parent and Aunt (as a boff) went renegade, taking off with an old Constitution class.
Well, I don't have a lot decided about my STO main, but here's what I have so far,
The now Vice Admiral Elizabeth Angel Klein was born on earth, to a family who had yet to see a single family member join Starfleet.
In general her family admired starfleet and what the federation stood for, but were happy to do their part for the galaxy by making sure earth stayed a good place to be.
Liza finally took the plunge however, having had a rather annoying home life, always being yelled at to put the kitchen replicators back together, and to stop trying to create homemade coaxial warp devices which always blew up and made a mess.
She did not have an easy first year at the academy, and a lot of things were taken apart around campus in short order in her first month there.
However, before being kicked out for her tampering with literally every machine she touched, the counselor introduced her to a Starfleet Admiral (who will likely remain unnamed) who convinced her to buckle down and learn how to use her technical gifts to be much much more than just a campus troublemaker.
His stern words changed her for the better, and she buckled down and studied extremely hard for the rest of her time there, graduating at or near the top of her class in engineering.
She served aboard a couple vessels in her early days in starfleet, being pushed into the role of acting captain during a borg emergency.
It was there where she found she had a knack for command, and became more determined than ever to advance through starfleet.
She's grown from a young 20 something to a woman in her mid 30s in her time, and has advanced greatly in rank from her humble ensign start.
She currently commands the federation starship U.S.S. Yggdrasil, NCC-990066-C, and has commanded 2 previous vessels of the same name by this time.
She's been though enough crazy stuff to have a more quiet personality, her years in starfleet have changed her from the prankster techie kid she once was, but she still knows how to get along with junior officers, and is often insisting they stand at ease in her presence, considering it easier to work with her staff on a more personal level.
"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
First of all I have Robert and LorinaLee both of whom attended Starfleet Academy.
Robert was a tactical officer and eventually worked his way through the ranks.
Lorina on the other hand, dropped out as an engineering officer in her third year and struck out on her own. In a game of chance, she acquired an Dominion War surplus runabout known as the Lucky Lou, and made a modest living in the outer reaches until an ambush by Orions forced her to blind warp off course. This led her to crash land on the Romulan colony world of Virinat. In return for the colonist's help, she agreed to stay at least as long she could until she got her runabout repaired. In time however, she learned their ways, and they accepted her as one of their own.
Beryl was a Starfleet officer who appeared in 2504 on Earth's North Pole under mysterious circumstances. According to interviews, she is former royalty from a parallel dimension and a victim of a possession by Metallia, an entity similar to the Rejac entity encountered by the USS Enterprise in the Late 23rd Century. Warriors in that dimension were able to destroy the entity, but as a result permanently exiled the host. (yes she is a crossover character that I decided to make so what)
Rhiana is from one of the few Romulan refugee families that were allowed to immigrate to worlds within Federation space and enroll in Starfleet Academy.
Jalvok was a centurion with the Imperial Romulan Fleet prior to the destruction of Romulus and had retired to Virinat because he was disgusted with all of the political in-fighting. Only the invasion of Virinat forced him to take the side of the Republic.
Haven't there already been several threads like this? Not that I mind, of course, I just think something like this should be stickied at some point.
Regardless, here are my characters.
Arkos Nair was a refugee from a species called the Korda, a once technologically advanced culture who had been all but annihilated by an ecological disaster, and had since regressed into an anti-technological theocracy. Upon escaping from his homeworld with some of his family and friends, Arkos was rescued by the Federation, and, after acclimatizing to his new surroundings at an astounding rate, he joined Starfleet. He rose rapidly through the ranks as an Engineer, and eventually made it to Captain. He now commands the U.S.S. Archimedes, a medium cruiser that has been deployed to seek and test new technology in the Solanae Dyson Sphere.
At his heart, although Arkos has accepted and adapted to the responsibilities of command, he is still an engineer at heart, and still loves to tinker with technology and devise logistical solutions whenever possible. He is aloof and friendly with his crew, and is steadfastly loyal to the Federation. He is not without his flaws, however-- he finds great difficulty in accepting things he finds irrational or inexplicable (ie organized religion), and he has never once looked back to his homeworld-- in his mind, the Federation is his only home now, though he has never once admitted to the feeling isolated or lonely for being the only member of his race in Starfleet.
Meral Ranek's story is set against the ruined backdrop of post-Dominion War Cardassia. As a girl, she lost her brother to Jem'Hadar executioners, and then lost most of her friends to the orbital bombardment. In the aftermath, she was forced to grow up in a shattered world riven by factionalism. In an effort to protect her, her father, Gul Tolan Ranek, had her sent to the Federation where she would hopefully be safe.
She did more than stay safe: when she came of age, Meral joined Starfleet, survived the relentless hazing of her classmates, became an officer, and eventually gained command of a heavy escort, the U.S.S. Axanar. Throughout all of her life, though, she has tried her hardest to stay out of Cardassian space-- while her father firmly supported the Detapa Council, her mother, a former Obsidian Order agent, has heavy ties to the True Way. Meral has family and friends fighting on both sides of the civil war, and the last thing she wants to do is betray either by getting involved and picking a side. She fears, however, that one day she may have no choice...
Lynathru Ajal (also known as Lynathru the Fool and Lynathru the Forsaken) is an Orion with a long string of bad luck. Once, he was a respected member of his own family's syndicate, until his mother, sister, and most of his family's wealth were lost in a disastrous raid. He was forced to become mated to a powerful Orion Matron, and for a while life was good...until his mate attempted to have him killed. With nowhere left to run to, Lynathru fled to the only place left where he could be safe-- Qo'noS, the heart of the Klingon Empire.
Reluctantly, Lynathru enlisted in the KDF, and eventually gained command of a Bird of Prey, the I.K.S. Notqa'. While Lynathru feigns loyalty to the Empire and says all the right things, he is at heart loyal only to himself, and will take every opportunity to acquire wealth, influence, and goods whenever his Klingon masters aren't looking. To him, honour and glory are just empty words, but as long as the Klingons give him the means to raid, pillage, and practice his piratical skills while staying safe from his pursuers, then Lynathru will mouth those empty words whenever his commanders are in earshot.
Ta'nara Velar has a much more sinister background than the rest. Prior to the attack on Virinat, she was an agent, operative, and interrogator of the Tal Shiar, and conducted hundreds of undocumented operations against foreign powers, Rihannsu dissidents, and other enemies of the Star Empire. She did all of this unquestioningly and proudly, for in her mind everything she was doing was for the benefit and safety of the Rihannsu people.
This all changed when one day she came across a communique between her overall superior, Colonel Hakeev, and an alien source. Realizing that the Tal Shiar had been compromised at the highest level, Ta'nara fled, evading the kill-teams who had sent to seal the leak. Ta'nara's flight took her to New Romulus, where, reluctantly, she defected to the Romulan Republic. Since then, Ta'nara has become a member of the Tal Dhiann, and commands the intel warbird R.R.W. Corax. Ta'nara's superiors do not completely trust her, however, and rightfully so-- in her mind, Ta'nara's defection was a matter of convenience, nothing more. She still believes in the Star Empire and its ideals, though she also sees it as her mission to destroy the Tal Shiar that she once served and trusted.
My captain Jim Harrigan was born in 2379 in North West England and went to the academy in 2397 graduating in 2401 and assigned to the USS Lakota, fought in the in opening rounds of the 3rd Federation Klingon conflict and was commended for original thinking by the captain for advocating attacking military supply routes with small but mobile assault wings in a senior staff meeting with command and raised to XO in 2406.
His out of the box thinking has got him noticed and a raise to captain in 2407 and command of the USS Waterloo, a Sovereign class cruiser.
In the recent Elachi invasion he distinguished himself again by closing to point blank range and lighting up the Elachi command ship at great risk to ship and crew playing a decisive role at the Battle of New Romulus.
Also fought in many actions against the Borg and is a veteran of the 2800 crisis and the battles with the voth and species 8472, currently assigned to the Delta Quadrant theatre of operations in the conflict with the Vaadwuar.
A commander who leads by example with a sharp tactical and strategic mind but also listens to to his senior staff when required and fights by the teachings of Sun Tzu
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."
-Lord Commander Solar Macharius
My main, An'riel, is an ex-astrogeologist, then a part time well digger on Virinat before the full time captain position opened up unexpectedly.
More seriously, she was in college when Hobus collapsed everything into chaos. Some of her family had been Navy, which opened a lot of doors, with part of it moving to Hobus to become part of the new aristocracy. Unfortunately, her uncle had a warbird he was serving on shot out from under him, and he, while not in command, was prominent enough to become a scapegoat, and that, along with a change in who was charge, was enough to finish off most of her family. An'riel had been very attentively not paying politics enough to not get caught up, even by the Tal Shiar, and those strong emotional control and observational controls served her well in her new job.
An'riel drifted to a small geological station which wasn't inclined to look too directly at credentials and passed time until Malem started stopping by. The thought of doing something, finally building something, even on a dusty world, instead of fighting over scraps of old glory was enough to get her interested. The Vulcan ideals did not interest her, dry thoughts from a barren world, and she avoided the Republic until Hakeev happened.
Since then, she's survived, a miracle in itself, and fought and helped the Republic carve out a space for itself and a new social model for the Romulan people she's more comfortable with than Unificaiton. Success in 'unconventional situations' has led her to be more or less D'tan's hunting hawk, sent in to fly around and swoop up what scurried out, and works more with Intelligence than she's comfortable with.
Admiral Antonine Revka (my first char) is more of the 'Vegan miracles' as part of the rapid, rapid promotion happening after the Borg invasion started tearing a hole in the command structure at the same time as rapid expansion in the fleet.
From a small, recently joined world out past the Badlands in Beta Urase in the deeps of the Alpha Quadrant, her species is referred to as the Sivkans, and she's fairly reptilian looking. Which has been a boon and a curse. Compared to more smooth-skinned species, she looks older than her age, which helps ease some of the resentment of her rapid promotions.
She was originally an ops officer, her duty being smooth functioning, and she's tried to bring that to her future commands. Given all the crazy stuff Stafleet is getting into, she rigs her ships and her crews to try and excel, rather than be perfect in a single area. Her biggest failure was getting involved in defense of the Solanae sphere during the Undine invasion, with the loss of her favorite preivous ship. She's taken a less-combat intensive position guarding the Jenolan sphere as she is evaluating her life.

My forum single-issue of rage: Make the Proton Experimental Weapon go for subsystem targetting!
I only have one character with any major backstory--my main, Alex Makepeace. When the Delta Recruits thing comes out, I'll probably create a new char and give him a backstory.
Cryptic's handling of it doesn't make sense, but if I use a bit of headcanon to say that Starfleet is basically so desperate for ship commanders that it's:
1. Granting minor commands to high-ranking enlisted personnel.
2. Aggresively recruiting enlisted personell even from non-Federation worlds.
What I'm envisioning is an enlisted crew consisting mostly of members from the NASA counterpart of a species from the Delta Quadrant, just barely warp-capable, who were approached by Starfleet for volunteer recruits. They're given a month or two of training, granted enlisted commissions, and then plunged into the deep end as soldiers and peacekeepers in a war-torn galaxy.
As for my main, here's his bio:
Alexander Makepeace, born in 2379 to Trevor and Sophia Makepeace, is a starship commander in the service of the Federation Starfleet, where he holds the rank of captain. Makepeace was born in the city of Denver, but spent the better part of his youth in the town of Achilles, at the edge of the Martian wilderness. There, he developed a passion for biology and ecology, and in 2397 he entered Starfleet Academy as a science major, with an emphasis on life sciences. Makepeace excelled in this field, consistently scoring among the top ten students for his classes, but in 2398, at the behest of tactical professor Korok and fellow student Elisa Flores, Makepeace switched to a tactical major. Kurok, who was responsible for recruiting a many officers from science and engineering majors into tactical, cited concerns about rising tensions with the Klingons, and has expressed pleasure with Makepeaces decision to switch majors. Makepeace, however, occasionally expresses regret over the change.
Makepeace graduated in 2401 and was assigned to the security division of the USS Nevada, a Miranda class frigate captained by Lieutenant Robin Tesla. Makepeace proved an adept squad leader, if only an average security officer, and was promoted to lieutenant, junior grade, in early 2402, replacing Lieutenant Gurian as security chief.
In mid-2402, a Borg incursion into Federation home space brought the Nevada into front-line combat. Most of the senior staff was killed in the battle, leaving Makepeace as acting captain. Makepeace performed admirably despite the fact that, in the grumbling words of his acting first officer, Thera th'Zarath, The pinkskin hasnt had an ounce of command training. Fleet command also noted Makepeaces performance, and following the battle he was promoted to full lieutenant and granted permanent command of the Nevada. Thera was not recommended for promotion, but in a move that baffled Fleet Command, Makepeace insisted that she remain as his first officer, despite their reportedly completely opposite and almost antagonistic approaches during the battle of Vega.
Makepeace, along with many other young captains, was placed on the fast track for promotion in an effort to fill the massive need for qualified commanders of newly built and recomissioned starships as war with the Klingons loomed. Makepeace was transferred rapidly from ship to ship and front to front, picking one or two officers from each one to follow him. Following his performance aboard the recomissioned Ambassador class USS Jupiter, Makepeace was granted the rank of captain and assigned to his permanent command, the refit Sovereign class USS Aurora, in 2409, where he is serves currently.
Makepeace is known for his great flexibility in combat tactics, though he is reluctant to engage in direct, head-on conflict. Thera explains that hes not a hard fighter. He leaves that to me. Where Alex excels is in thinking warfare. Hell circle around behind an enemy battle group, luring one or two away by themselves so theyre easier to handle. His favorite tactic is to sneak up behind the enemy, transfer full power to impulse and streak by so close our shield flares up against the enemys. And as he goes by, he drops a set of tractor beam mines and vents warp plasma, leaving the enemy to sit there helplessly and cook while we swing around and bring our weapons to bear.
Makepeace has stated that he considers Thera to be the power behind the Auroras prowess in battle, saying that I just point and say go there. Its Thera and the others that get us there. Further, he states that, Thera makes our battle plans work. I can, occasionally, come up with something good, but I usually dont know it until she starts hitting me over the head with it when I try to throw it out.
Makepeace is slow to anger, and for this reason is often given diplomatic assignment with antagonistic powers, and is occasionally partnered with Captain Shon to balance out the andorians more aggressive approach to negotiating and solving problems. Makepeace is practically Vulcan, Shon reports. Ive seen Klingons shout insults to his face that would make me pull back and punch them, but he just shrugs his shoulders and says perhaps. He admits that In many ways, Makepeace is more the picture of a Starfleet captain than I am. He always seeks peace first and youd better take that peace, because if you make him fight, youll regret it.
Alex is one of those people whose anger burns cold, Thera reports. Its hard to make him mad, but when you do see, when I get mad, I break things, and then I forget about it. When Alex gets mad, its like a switch flips inside him. Its hard to see unless you know what to look for, but he gets this gleam in his eye. He doesnt do anything differentnot anything you can see. But wheels start turning in his head, and those wheels are figuring out how to, um hoist you by your own petard.
Makepeace is known to be talented in viewing situations from other points of view, which combined with his even temper makes him effective at conflict resolution, but he also tends to remain distant.
He doesnt connect easily, according to his chief medical officer, Commander Rahga. He can understand and sympathize with almost anyone, but its hard for him to make friends. It takes time and common purpose to get him to open up to you, but when you do youre in for good. It doesnt matter what your rank is, or if youre Starfleet, civilian, unaligned, or even KDFhe treats all his friends the same way.
Lieutenant RMirru, commander of the Auroras hazard team, reports that Alex has a wonderfully sharp sense of dry wit, but you only get to see it when youve been accepted into his inner circle. Well, that, or when he crushes his opponents. He has a repertoire of delicious one-liners.
Thera admits that when I first fell under Alexs command aboard the Nevada, I had nothing but contempt for him. He was meek, he avoided conflict, he avoided risk, and he was indecisive. It wasnt until much later that I realized he can do practically anything you set him to if you light a fire under his tail.
I remember reading about an incident aboard Kirks Enterprise, Makepeace said. They orbited a planet which altered transporter beams, splitting anyone who used it into two halvesone aggressive, and the other weak and ineffectual. That second one is me, and Thera is my other half. I couldnt do the things Ive done if I hadnt had her as my first officer.
Makepeace, in a remnant of his origin as a biologist, participates in raising of Risan tropical birds, and generally has several on board at any given time. He is also engaged in raising a voth raptor hatchling, recovered from a damaged Voth frigate during the Auroras brief deployment to the Jenolan Dyson Sphere.
I only have created a back story for my main Vulcan Toon T'Moro
First son of the famous vulcan magician T'Dah and her erant Lover S'Allgon.
T'Moro choose to have his hair styled in the shaved mohaxk after his time at the academy. His long flowing blonde hair and pointed ears earned him the nickname Legolas.
He spent the first 80 years after leaving the Vulcan Science Academy performing with the Ultra Techno Group "T'Pau Chika Wow Wow" as lead Lyrist.
The band suffered a schism when Cal' Kor player Snoblock fell whilst performing a S'larian dance, The micro fusion unit on the gravity boots failed resulting in Snoblock falling into a volcano.
T'Moro then enlisted in Temporal Operations to try to find a way to alter the past and reform "T'Pau Chika Wow Wow".
It was only recently discovered that a Kazon shook a carpet in 2805 and this carpet was laced with Oblivicron particles. These particles being aggitated at the atomic level bi-trilopated and created a subspace link between the edge of the carpet and Snoblocks gravity boots, ultimately causing them to fail.
T'Moro has made it his personal mission to eradicate all the Kazon now so the carpet in the future can't destroy the gravity boots in the past thus ensuring Snoblocks existence.
Commander Ryan Allington, Starfleet, CO, U.S.S. Victorious:
Born in the city of Ipswich, UK (yes, I'm an optimist :P), he's the son of two Starfleet Officers - Commanders Richard and Mary Allington, XO and CMO of the U.S.S. Horizon, respectively. He's from a long line of military officers dating back on-and-off to the Second World War. As soon as he completed Secondary Schooling, he applied for Starfleet Academy, where he developed a close friendship with fellow cadet Marilla Saph. Midway through his freshman year, he'd see his parents killed during a Klingon surprise attack on Starbase 24 while the Horizon was carrying patients. As a result, he nearly quit the academy and eventually switched from the engineering track to the command track.
He takes his oath to Earth and the Federation seriously, believing in the Federation's guiding principles sometimes further than Federation law, even forcing the Federation Council to acknowledge that its policies of segregating augments and subjects of genetic engineering was in violation of their sentient rights.
Lieutenant Elizabeth Dannover, Starfleet, Chief of Engineering, U.S.S. Victorious:
An orphan from Manhattan, NY, Dannover applied to Starfleet Academy a year after Ryan and served as an Engineer on the U.S.S. Norfolk at Vega Colony when the Borg attacked (old tutorial). She was captured and assimilated before being rescued from the wreckage of a Borg Sphere by then Acting Captain of the Victorious, Ryan Allington.
Traumatised by her experience with the Collective, and suffering major pain due to the Borg implants still stuck inside her, over the next few months she integrated deeply into the Victorious' crew, to the point where she became a close friend and sparring partner of the ship's security chief, Tala Tr'zarac. She came to have an almost brother-sister relationship with Ryan. She's a creative thinker, as well as being fast on her feet when it comes to doing her job. She's also selfless, willing to go to serious lengths to not only perform her duty, but exceed them, even against her worst fear; the Borg.
Commander Marilla Saph, Starfleet, CO U.S.S. Darwin:
A Trill from a mining colony on New Midlands, Marilla Ziran was studying at Starfleet Academy when her home was attacked by the Orion Syndicate - her parents becoming refugees and her sister being taken - presumed killed. She enjoys a close relationship with fellow Captain, Ryan Allington, occasionally having intimate relations. Other than that, her focus is on the next geological anomaly to cross her radar.
At the age of 15, Marilla (named 'Daya' by her friends, after the word used by the New Midlands natives for 'blue', a reference to her symbiont's name) is the youngest Trill to become a host, mainly as a matter of necessity, as the Saph symbiont's last host died on New Midlands, with no other suitable hosts and with the previous host specifically requesting Daya take the symbiont. After several months adjustment, she joined Starfleet Academy with the experiences of 4 previous hosts, 3 of which were in Starfleet and the 4th being a Federation Ambassador. Despite this, Daya's own personality remains dominant over those of the previous hosts
She never went through either tutorial, but she was a fairly typical goldshirt junior officer from her graduation from Starfleet Academy in 2402. She was aboard the USS Montgomery Scott as the Damage Control Assistant until 2405, along with a promotion to Lieutenant JG. She was then assigned to the USS Clifton Sprague, a Sabre class escort as Operations Officer, earning a meritorious promotion to Lieutenant. In 2408, she was detached from the Sprague to attend Senior Starship Officers School. Her status as Honor Graudate (1st in the class across all catergories), selected her for a slot to command a starship.
I only have on character that I head cannon/RP on.
Captain Richard Bristol of the USS Constellation.
He took command of the ship in 8387 during Admiral Kirk's exile on Vulcan. His first mission was to find the USS Goddard that went missing in the UFP border with the Sagittarius Arm of the galaxy.
The mystery uncovers a Dyson sphere and a heretic sect of Voth that evolved from Velociraptors. These Voth believe they are from Earth and plan to use the advanced weaponry from the sphere to reclaim it. To prevent the Voth from reclaiming the Earth they cause the sun in the middle of the sphere to collapse and become a black hole. The black hole destroys the sphere and the Voth. The Constellation is caught in the grip of the black hole but manage to escape.
Heavily damaged the Constellation limps back to Earth Starbase...and discovers that time warp occur and that it's now the year 2409.
After being vetted by Temporal Investigations Starfleet decides to turn the Constellation into a museum ship with the mission to travel around the Federation, promoting Starfleet.
The ship returns to ESD, where Captain Bristol is about to resign his commission...being a museum ship driver was not what he wanted to do with his life. While at ESD the events of "Surface Tension" take place. Bristol fights the Undine on the station and saves Admiral Quinn. The crew fire up the Constellation and retaliate against the attacking Undine ships. Thy warp to Qo'nos and destroy the Planet Killer...at the loss of the Constellation.
Back on the new ESD Admiral Quinn brings Bristol and crew back to the active fleet. He assigns them a new ship....in a scene very similar to the end of 'Voyage Home'. Captain Bristol's shuttle is heading towards a Miranda class starship. The shuttle turns and approaches an Odyssey class star ship renamed Constellation.
Crew:
Captain Bristol - shades of Kirk...he's very much a space cowboy
CDR Sharyn Seo - Bristol's Executive Officer and ex girlfriend...they don't get along...very competitive...like Kirk and Decker in TMP
LCDR Kraig Cofield - Constellation's Chief Engineer...he is a clone. I like the idea that each series added the villain species from the previous series as a crew member (TNG added Klingons, DS9 added Ferengi, Voy added Borg). He'll be the outsider character and sort of hated outside of the ship as people expect him to go Eugenics war.
CDR Belinda Gusky - Senior Medical Officer...she's has a rough bed side manner...think House...she tends to ignore ship business
LT. Bettina Fagan - Helmsman...top of her class...loves flying and speed
LT. Julio O'Hara - Navigator...he's a jokester and magician...loves to do card tricks and sleight of hand
LCDR Trevor Stabler - Security Chief...workaholic...loves guns and explosions
ENS Robbie Johanson - Science Officer....he's the reverse Wesley Crusher...I really like the idea that there's rookie in the spot where we see the most experienced character...it's his miscalculation that sends the crew to the future
LT. Dinnen G'sav - Communications....Andorian female...she's an expert mimic and can copy any voice she hears.
CDR Gels - Counselor....Tellarite female...her job is to help the crew integrate into 2410.
Your pain runs deep.
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.
Comments
here's some brief bios I wrote out a while ago:
File 007001 - Melati Kusumu
She has an active dislike for the Terran Empire, evne though in some wys she acts like them.
traits: Accurate, Conservation of energy, Elusive, Resilient, Sturdy, Techie, Telekinesis, Telepathic, Photonic Capacitor
File 007004 - Tetin
My character Tsin'xing

Then again, that could've been just professional courtesy....y'know, courtesy between two monsters.

In Cold Blood
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.
