I play it better to be safe than sorry and do around 50% of each dino. With my awesome engineer I mine him twice and put down a plasma turret and that's enough - so around 20 to 30 seconds.
Don't take this the wrong way, but you and your amazing engineer are both trying too hard and taking away the chance of other players to earn more dil by tagging .
If you want to be smart about it , run a few experiments with hand weapons only .
Currently some of my toons take 10-15 shots to tag a vrex .
On the bright side, you will have more time to run to the next vrex .
But only by testing can you get to your required minimal shots .

I have taken them down 75% and then ran to another rex. When I did (and I had aggro almost the entire time) I got about 10 Dil for it, and 10 for the second one, which I got there with about 80% left on it, and started drawing aggro withing a few shots.
I think that like a lot of other "fixes" to the game, it is not working the same for everyone. Besides, with the campers, I stopped worrying about it. In fact, if I don't need the Dil for anything, I don't bother grinding for it anymore. I have found other games that are more enjoyable, till there is another grind even in STO that gives something for the timegated grind.
I used to enjoy the game when you could choose to tag, or stay and fight. Or you could choose to do high DPS, or tank, or heal. But with the focus so much on DPS, it means you need to play their way, or you bring the overall team performance down.
If they wake up from the money blindness they are in, I will be back full swing, and drop the other games. But as it is now, STO has lost its glamor.
