Think about it? Why do you really think they "just" use Twatter now?
Social media, it's beaten over everyones head all the time.
The Official game forums are bereft of meaningful Dev discussions because lots of gamers are sick and tired the direction this beloved IP is now heading. I dont speak for everyone, I wouldn't be that bold, but there are enough of us old timers feeling pretty miserable about the state of the game at the moment. Lashing out at the Devs isn't big or clever, but you can only pay lip service for so long.
This STO is a very different beast from it's early days, this next year will be my turning point. I dont subscribe anymore but I still come back for events and anniversaries.
Back slapping is all well and good if you have earned it, riding on others coattails isn't, especially after the last few fiasco's.
You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time. But you cant fool all of the people all of the time. Enjoy the party while it lasts.
Being a fan of dark humour, a german and having historic knowledge, I will not go into details and just say that in human history some ppl have enjoyed very hidious things. Getting a single letter from one fan, but ignoring the voices of the forum, well, I find that kind of...amusing.
While it's really neat and everything that a fan did this for them, and it could be that this Alex is genuinely enjoying the game, wherever he is (honestly, I wish I was in his shoes right now), I really wish that Gecko had, at the very least, waited to post about this until maybe after some of the current issues with the anniversary event had been properly addressed and fixed.
As it stands, it's kind of in poor taste to be posting about how the devs were apparently partying at the same time as their customers were suffering frustration as a result of the rather glaring bugs and other problems currently infesting the anniversary event in particular, and the game, as always, in general.
"There will never be enough blood to wash away my need for vengeance! A single world...I could destroy a million worlds and it would not be enough! Your existence is an insult to the memory of my people! I will continue my fight, even if I must fight alone!"

Picture him as Gul Dukat, and all makes sense.
Like the DSN-Villain he is selfindulgend and lives in an illusion.
Today was our Star Trek Online's 5th anniversary party at Cryptic. Stephen D'Angelo hosted a retrospective of the last 5 years, and many of us shared some of our favorite stories. We also played a Star Trek family feud trivia game, had a Star Trek costume contest, and there was much cake and cookies. It was a very good day. so it was perfect timing that we happened to received a package from a fan.
We opened the box to find a wonderful box of Star Trek micro-machine toys, including an ESD! Oh Boy TOYS!
But more than the toys, we got a wonderful letter from a fan, Alex. Alex wrote a heartfelt thank you letter to the team and told us why he enjoys Star Trek Online, the podcasts, and he shared how STO and the team has inspired him to pursue a career in game developer.
That was the best part of the 5th Anniversary for me.
From all the team, Thank You Alex for the micro-machines, but most of all, thank you for your wonderful letter and for sharing with us your STO story.

Nice that the team had a fun little retrospective party. That said - too bad you guys couldn't have done a bit more testing before pushing out the bug ridden mess that was the 5th Anniversarry the playwers who help pay your salaries are playing because sorry but with the initial lag; the buggy 5th Anniversary content that makes bot the Omega Particle and Q-Party missions a chore and not really enjoyable in any sense (No credit for scanning Omega Particles the Q-Party not awarding Dill at all and the Q's not disappearing making it hard to do then 'shell game' portion, etc.)
And yes, at least you guys did take care of the HORRIBLE lag; but only after player outrage over the "Hey, just give it a couple of days..." <--- Again, really classy initial to a MAJOR issue impacting the real playability of STO itself.
So, yeah, nice to heart the staff was so nicely rewarded for launching a buggy mess of a 5th Anniversary to the playerbase. D'Angelo certainly seems to have his priorities straight as STO EP.

Nice story, and congrats on making it to year 5 as well - it's no mean feat in the F2P MMO market these days. In your shoes I'd certainly celebrate too.
I do hope you contacted Alex in private with your thanks too. He doesn't need to see the ongoing whines of the miserable people.

You know, taking an hour or two off to celebrate the game's 5 year anniversary strikes me as an entirely reasonable thing to do. I doubt that it's delayed any fixes by much (since they'd have to wait to be deployed), and it'd be good for the team's morale. While I'm not a fan of many of the decisions made since last summer, I hope that you had fun at the party.
It was a nice story Al, I'm sure Alex is well chuffed with your response.
Whilst many of us have serious issues and some people are not even playing until it's sorted, or worse have actually uninstalled, it's nice also to see the human side of the dev team. Your comment served no purpose, it merely highlighted how rude you and some other people can be. Better to be considered an idiot and stay silent than open your mouth and confirm it.
This is basically where I stand. I have serious criticisms and have spent a lot of time explaining the reasoning behind them, and possibilities as to how they could be addressed.
But I draw the line at going personal against the dev team. I strongly doubt the problems are due to their being some kind of horrible human beings. I actually suspect the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and the only way to have any chance of being heard is to remember that in how we deal with them.

YEah, none at all. :P
I too am curious which ones Geko got. Pictures are fun!
We shoulda all mail em present boxes too. Im thinking about a large mostly empty box in present paper with "happy anniversary"-card and a USB stick in it.. labeled "best moments of STO PvP, from the time this game wasn't all about grind and still had PvP and quality development".
I didn't even knew you had any complain. You spend your time claiming we are a bunch of idiots and whatnot. Which is not really constructive.
I mean, it's no big deal if you have no complain, opinions and all that, but I never saw a single constructive criticism from you. I'm curious, what's wrong in the game, for you ?
Who is we? All of the forums? I can name at least 5 people who while I disagree with and yet still would not call them idiots.
Now then, constructive criticism. There is a few things but I will pick just one not to derail this thread ever more.
You know how at level 40 feds get two choices per ship type (escort, cruiser, sci ship) for free? I think the KDF and Republic should have the same. Maybe make a strip down version of a few c-store ships to do it.

In an age where we measure our friendships by the number and quality of likes and tweets, it's really nice when someone takes the time to recognize you in an old fashioned way.
Congratulations on the 5th Anniversary - I'm having fun again.
Players, at least those in my fleet, are signing on again and chatting. THAT's a major improvement, and it raises my hopes.
Even though I don't always agree with your business choices CaptainGecko, and that's ok to do, you still surprise me in a good way.
Seriously, why rain on a nice positive post when there are 95872984729375623974012 other threads where you have expressed your dissatisfaction. I am certain they are aware of the problems and are working to fix them as quickly as they can. There is nothing wrong with a little party now and then to blow off some steam. That's not to say I am happy about the state of things at the moment, it's just that there are other threads to discuss those issues.
Anyway, congratulations on on such a nice gift, and thanks for sharing the story with us.
You just lost all of my respect. There is plenty of constructive criticism on the forums. The problem is it gets ignored and swept under the rug.
Bull. I look at the forums daily and I never see any of this "constructive" criticism. All I see is visceral hate and personal attacks against the developer team. If there is any legitimate criticism, you people have done a decent job of covering it up all on your own with heaps of verbal TRIBBLE.
