Yeah, Daz is cool for free. I have to figure out what I like working with before I spend more money on tools, although I'll probably mess around with Blender next (since it is also free).
http://www.sharecg.com/ has a ton of stuff for Star Trek. Uniforms, com badges, props (like phasers & tricorders), starships (Defiant, Intrepid, D7, etc). Then you can mix it with Star Wars, Mass Effect, other free stuff, and mess around rendering dumb nerd stuff like Star Wars versus Star Trek
There's a long-lived thread on the Daz forums about Star Trek goodies. The uniforms are generally built on V3/M3 or V4/M4 figures & outfits. I use Genesis 2, but the V4/M4 stuff works just fine.
"Free" is a bit misleading. Some of the "free" stuff needs to be fit on top of things like the V4 Bodysuit or the V4 Courageous outfit from Daz. The uniforms (a ton of STO-inspired things), TNG/Voy/DS9 pajamasuits, the skant, and so on... they modify the multifunctional stuff like the Bodysuit. I don't want to direct link since there are STO outfits out there, and I don't know how picky the mods would get about those things.
For anyone who doesn't know what Daz can do, here's a really bad image that I threw together in like 5 minutes. It's all just a matter of having stuff on hand that you can pose & move around... not much art to this image at all. http://fav.me/d8g1iic
A stock G2F character, hair, the V4 Courageous outfit with a free uniform modification on top, a free com badge accessory, and a free environment (a curved hallway from a Galaxy-class ship). I didn't even set up lights or a camera... it's just the basic render tool using the built-in 3delight renderer in Daz Studio.
Just imagine: You could bang out all sorts of horrible fanfic with this kind of thing! :P
thanks for the links now to go on a downloading binge:D
and yeah, daz is excellent especially considering it's price (free), it's inability to directly modify the mesh irks me, but that's the same in it's competitor poser as well. you can cheat with displacement maps somewhat but they're still limited

Yup, I admit the price of Daz was what got me into it. Poser 10 might not be that expensive, but it's more $$$ than free.
I had no idea a hobbyist could do this stuff, and for free to start! Plus, at Xmas, there was a ton of stuff on sale. All those microtransactions were very addictive :P I bought way more than I needed, but I guess that's better than having less.
Now I have a reason to upgrade my Windows machine. Rendering sure eats up a lot of CPU and/or memory.
The Daz thread ("Star Trek Builders"...) has all sorts of neat links. I didn't know people use DeviantArt to post 3d models, but I pulled a couple cool things off of there as well. Nebula-class, a Romulan Warbird, some interiors.
I think that's my next little project... learning how to mess with lights (or light-emitting objects, anyway) and rig up those nacelles, deflectors, and impulse engines.
Oh, and I saw some cool head morphs for Klingons, Cardassians, and so on. Too bad it's all M4/V4 (and I'd have to buy a plugin to get the head morphs over from M4/V4 over to M6/V6... *sigh*).
Just added Firefall to my play list and I'm really hooked.
I'd gone in to see what improvements the current team had done to move them past their legendary dragged-out beta (for which certain people got canned). It is a remarkable transformation. The world of Firefall is breathtakingly beautiful if your graphics card can handle its full potential. Mineral harvesting, which dominated the beta, is still important but now a clear second to actual MMO gameplay with an FPS nature. I love the "your chocolate in my peanut butter moments" when two or more player's missions and possibly a world event overlap an area, and crazy war ensues.
I stumbled into the new World Boss today, in the forest during the game's night and a protracted three-way war ensued with the boss and his herd vs. a large band of poachers vs. the players. It is a spectacular fight at game's night, looking like something Michael Bay filmed, and mine was much more intense than the example I linked. (Which looks like the player turned down his graphics to a blander look than I see in game) I'd not had so much fun in an online game in some time.
