Well, this would explain the recent influx of constant spam plaguing everywhere.

The spam has been coming from accounts that were clearly player owned at some point(non-wargarble @handles) and new accounts don't immediate access to zone-wide chat channels.

Well, since a couple of days I regularily "meet" the spammers at Q'onos transporters or the boff trainer. You see a couple of them, basic outfit, all level 3, just standing there with their Bath'leth. Mostly Gorn, but some others chime in (of course identical twins galore, probably the default look). But when I first encountered them and had a look (for the "twin" reason) I found out that the ratio of "23768314256@fksaugkf" to "tinytom@theruler" or at least "genericcharactername@daplaya" is about one, meaning there are a shipload full of obvious spambots with "normal" handles.

Thanks for the heads up. I'd advise everyone to change their passwords, regardless.

They are using afk or quit player's account to spam these week, It never happened before. All character is leveled or full level as well as high rank, thats impossible to level by these gold spammer

Just going to quash this rumor right now...no..just no. Our db's have not been compromised.

You need check these spammer's accounts, is they are from players ? and i found somewhere selling STO pack and bounded item by half of price, i dont understand how they get them, but something must be wrong

Handles of these spammers just keep adding to my ignorelist. But somehow everytime a new one shows up. But things like this appears on many other MMO's, not just STO.

Also, this "theory" about PWE's database compromised, I wouldn't be too overly concerned. People who got their accounts TRIBBLE probably went to the spammed website out of curiosity. "Stuff for half the price. Let's check it out!" And then their computers got infected. Simple as that. It sounds very unlikely I know, but there are people stupid enough to fall for it.

Sounds like someone might be covering something up.

... And people are complaining about the lack of official presence on the forum when certain people spew idiotic comments like this.

They are legally bound to disclose when there is a breach, both in the US and in Europe (because PW has offices in Europe).

    I'm not worried about this.

I am pretty sure there are legal ramifications to a data breach, to include mandatory disclosure in the US.

There are mandatory reporting requirements for medical data breaches (thanks to HIPPA), but I'm unaware of any reporting requirements for general data breaches.

Yes, they're from players. This is a free-to-play game which makes it all too easy for spammers to make account after account to run their bots from. As for the bound items, those are almost certainly phishing expeditions since the only way to fulfill an order for one of those is to give out account information (and put out more money than they'd be taking in) ... after visiting their malware ridden fraud web site, that is.

Make no mistake, these guys are criminals and they have their fraudulent schemes down to a science.

Short version: There's no US federal law yet (although the President is trying to change that as of very recently), but all but three US states, including California, do have such laws.

98.4% of everything a Cryptic/PWE employee says is a lie. This is clearly another one of those lies. This is further proof that all of our personal information and credit card information have been TRIBBLE, stolen and sold.

I think your tinfoil hat is cutting off the blood circulation to your cerebral cortex. As previously noted, they are required by law to disclose that kind of data breach. If one had happened, you would have been informed.

    Mods, close this thread please.

This is indeed a disturbing rumor.

It is not true, and I will be closing this thread to keep it from being spread any further.

In the future, if you are your fleetmates/friends find much of your EC or other in-game currency is "gone" make sure to file an in-game ticket so our CS team can examine your/their account to see if there are any signs of suspicious activity, or a history of recent purchases that a user might have forgotten after to much Romulan Ale :)

Take care everyone, and remember, only you can prevent forum fires!
