when I was in Korea last winter for this event I noticed a lot of rubber banding in my connection, which also caused a lot of failures in the race. I think that if you have any problems with your connection (lags or slow internet speed) then it causes your race to run slower than the NPC. I gave up on the race last year and just ignored it this year since I had more than enough lobis from boxes. The race use to be fun, but now is just the same grind with no appeal. :P
Roll forward at corners. Press "W" two times in a row and you will immeadiatly change direction AND stop sliding. It becomes VERY easy that way.
best advice ever!
also I do agree this race is REALLY &*@!ing annoying and needs to DIE! But I think that about most all the winter events....
p.s. to the OP, you are definitely doing something wrong.. even with a Gorn and their slow TRIBBLE speed you can win the race fairly easily. Takes 1-2 tries to get a feel for when/where you slow down but the NPC is slower than a gorn so...
I just uploaded a new video showing a quick run through of the race this year. Not sure about the video quality though, and may reupload after trying to fix it.
I use the same principle as I explain in the original that you linked to, and the new video is more just a demonstration that you can do it quickly and beat your opponent, even without things like frosted boots or that silly winter event tribble.
The year doesn't technically matter, as they haven't made any significant changes to the mechanics for running on ice over the years, but I figured that people might like to see one from this year's event just so that they can see it is the same.

Race for photos is easy. You don't have to go breakneck speed. Just take the sharp turns slow and do a ROLL if you feel like you're gonna slip out of the lane. After a couple trys (to warm back up after 11 months of not doing it) I can win the race easy while reading all the inane zone chat. And believe me I'm no fast twitch gaming god, so if I can do it anyone can!
seriously this ice race is really annoying how is any one suppose to win it I've tryed 5 times and couldn't even win:mad: so I'm just gonna forget about this stupid race and just get the lobi from the lockbox and unlock the ship:mad:
i ran this 15-20 times before I got the hang of it but then im not a defeatist.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
Like the OP, I struggled at first. The key for me was to start rolling on turns - that killed any problems with drifting out of the lanes - and to line up for long runs whenever possible.
I'm now doing the projects on 3 alts to unlock all 3 Breen ships. Good result for 10 mins play per day.

Also on case noone mentioned it the first 5 pages of this useless thread:
You can just wait and watch others win and see how they do it.
I usually overtake the enemy of the rubber before me or even the runner himself. Just dont take the markers too seriously.
When some people are saying the game is easy, please take it with a pinch of salt. For some of us we have been running the race for years on 15 toons which meant before the changes we were running the race 375+ times per year. Having run the race over a 1000 times now is not out of the question. For us then when we run the race we can run it by just using mouse look while watching tv in the background as it is now second nature.
AS i said before: if you can play STO you have a connection to the Internet. Maybe use that connection to use Google to search for a walkthrough. There are several good ones on youtube
Treat the markers as suggestions. I've gotten pretty far outside them without being disqualified. I try to take turns on the regular ground, rather than the icy track. Also, when the track twists and turns, you can often more or less go straight through that section of track.
Do you guys use the keyboard or a laptop mouse pad to run or something? Using a proper mouse to run, I've never had the slightest difficulty with this event. I'm honestly a little taken aback by the strife over it.
Its uninspired TRIBBLE for 5 year old konsole players. No Humor.. no fun.. nothin.
AND:. since it startet the Game is unplayable.. i dont know if it is the same in USA.. but in Germany you can forgett to play it.
30 people i know.. and 29 of em cant play at all cause of laggs.
So thanks cryptic for trying to host a game on less then minimum hardware clusters.
Since DR everything went worse and worse.... think its time to leave the game again and
im glad i never was so stupid to buy a livetime sup.
You want money.. give us servers that work. The game itself is fun now.. lot of possibilitys... lot of different things to do. But its unplayable. Complete.... nonsense.
the sad fact is the more things they add to the game the greater the requirements from you pc you will need, they tried to minimise the impact by deleting stuff nobody was playing (and everyone complained) but what they deleted in no way covered for what they have added.
if you were playing a console like xbox or playstation you would have to upgrade to play the latest versions of games, if you want to keep playing just dump that old pc and get a new one that is worthy.
you don't need to spend a fortune I got a brand new top notch pc laptop from ebay for under £300 and it will play STO for years to come.
the problem is as more and more updates come out there will be more and more pc users who refuse to upgrade who will be left by the wayside.
can you just imagine trying to play 'Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare' or 'Far Cry 4' on a playstation 1.

Wha?
You are mixing up some concepts in a very odd way.
Removal of old content will have ZERO impact on a computer's performance. The game does not load all the zones when you log in or something ... it is on demand. If you were not, for example, actually doing the exploration missions, you would never load those zones. Deleting the files off your PC has a tiny impact on hard disk performance, but that is not even measurable in terms of game performance.
The reason new content uses more resources is they are using better quality graphics and larger numbers of NPC/AI entities and things like that which consume resources.
It is not the quantity of things added, it is the quality. If they had only added one new area with the new graphics and sounds and AI and whatnot, that one area would be slow and the old areas would be untouched in performance. If they added 1000 areas using the old graphics and whatever code, it would perform the same as it had been doing. Its not quantity at all.
Honestly the game is quite gentle for requirements. I have a great network connection on an antique machine and I have zero problems at all. No lag, no crashes, no issues. The game does not demand a hot gaming PC less than 6 months old. It demands a mid grade machine less than 10 years old, maybe, but not by much. The big hardware requirement for the game seems to be having a decent internet provider.

theres still a heck of a lot of stuff you have with you all of the time you just dont realise it, all of your inventory, all of the ships you own, all of your bank content, anything you are crafting, anything you are upgrading, any doff missions you are running.
in fact everything that is not map you carry with you all of the time and they have added quite a bit with this expansion, what with captains specialization and new rep and ship mastery and what have you all adds to slow the system on pc`s that are not up to the job.
and also a lot of data like maps although you might not have them loaded as such they are still sitting there on you hard drive taking up space and making your hard drive run slower and if your hard drive runs slower your whole system including any games like STO will run slower too.
of course not every map is on your hard drive but if you play every day then anywhere you have been in the past 6 months or so is on your hard drive taking up space.
