I keep getting this odd "see through walls" glitch where particle effects like engine cores (on stations) and monitors will show through the walls - or even start flickering.
The worst occurence is on the Earth Spacedock where the planet below decides to overlap everything on screen at certain angles when I'm in the Exchange/Tailor areas. (This only seems to happen in "ground combat" areas, but everywhere - Planets Surfaces, Ship Bridges and even Stations)
That sounds like a z-order/stencil buffer problem.
I see that you found a solution, but you could also try a few other things if you want other options.
Change DirectX version in game.
Disable triple buffering.
Update graphics drivers.
Any of those (and other things) can help with those types of problems. Alternatively it is possible that there is some bad silicon on your GPU causing buffer address issues. That is somewhat less likely however.
My guess is "hope" keeps people not playing but posting on the forums. For others, its a path of sad realization and closure. Grieving takes time. The worst "haters" here love the game, or did at some point.
