Is this D'Angelo's player account or something? You seem very similar in what you claim to be an exploit.
I absolutely admit to running normals on occasion, not for the dil or marks really, just the amusement of stomping it. If the pugs can't avoid the afk penalty that's on them, as I have gone over before its such a low bar anyone should be able to avoid it.
Maybe this thread will get cryptic to actually make a real afk and stop using damage as the determining factor, but wouldn't get your hopes up. Actually a quick fix they could make would be a simple if statement, if match time is less than X no afk or a much lower bar. Doubt most normal runs are done in under 2 minutes, especially if someone really is afk.

However this basic human nature that even so called "elite" players exhibit is just that and part and parcel of the massive design flaw in their system also consider that autofail conditions in place in the other versions of the thing that means people can in fact waste their time for what can amount to no gain at all.
the solution is for them to remove the optionals which are not optional in advanced so that the player base overgeared for normals can play them as they would normals since obviously he is after marks and dilithium. HOwever that being said the open battlezones are a much better solution to farming these things then q's, but whatever floats your boat as they say. Well, to be fair to the OP, I went left and Nike went right. The OP unknowingly followed one of us. I vaped the whole left side with 1/2 of a FAW cycle (so like 2-3 seconds)--then I immediately evasive to middle and killed that with my beta faw cycle. Nike did the same from the right and we met in the middle. So, the OP was simply flying in dead space the whole time. That left him with a chance to hit the dread at the end, but both Nike and I FOMM'd the dread and burst kiled it with a full alpha/dem omega faw strike. So we essentially took out the dread in less than 2 seconds (spheres included). We completed the entire map in less than 1:30.
It was the dread vaping so quickly that got the OP; normally the other players can lay "enough" damage on the dread to avoid penalty, but this did not happen on the run. So literally, the OP was flying in "dead space" the whole match--albeit a rather quick match. He was simply left targeting ghosts.
As to why we do it? Well that is pretty apparent: It is kind of awesome melting everything in a blink. It really is.
How to fix it? Make the rewards worth it for advanced and elite (when elites come out). There is no reason what-so-ever for us to play elites now as it takes way to long to complete for a piddly reward. Why bother? No Win Elite takes 30-40 minutes to complete for only marginally better dil and absolutely no additional fleet marks. This is a joke. I can do No Win Normal in a little over 5:30 minutes and get most of the rewards and the exact fleet marks. Hell, I can run it twice in the time it takes to do a single elite run and get "more" rewards than doing the elite (and twice the fleet marks).
Basically there is no incentive for us to do elites. . . .

Look on the bright side- word is a big buff is coming and mk XIV should be about 30% more DPS than mk XIII, so stomping should be easier.
...the sub 50's should have an even bigger problem keeping up. Good for you.
Besides, I occasionally do elites and I have the same issue as the OP- elites clearing the level before I can rack up substantial DPS numbers, but I have the added bonus of greifer chat spam because I couldn't keep up with the DPS race. Still, I get to keep my BNP's.
As an experiment, I put a T3 ship (with whatever random white->blue X to XII gear I had lying around) on 'autoattack', and 'target enemies who have attacked you', put engines to full, and set it to /follow another ship in CCA.
After that input, I stayed entirely away from my keyboard.
To my surprise, not only did I avoid the AFK penalty, I also got fourth place.
I too understand and feel for you all newer players with less advanced equipment. I've experienced it in other games. But the Advanced and Elite STFs are too difficult for a lot of us now. My alts can't complete even the Advanced ones now and they have T5U Fleet vessels. I won't even attempt them anymore with any of my alts. I'll only do the Advanced STFs with my main Fed character and even then, only when I'm sure I've got enough time and am up to keeping on top of everything. The Elites are out all together for me and I have T5U Fleet ships and some advanced equipment. I am sorry you are suffering due to the changes, but you aren't the only ones. I will try to be more considerate to others in the STFs, even more than I already am. But if we want to complete the reps and get more equipment, we need marks too.

Here's where the contradiction to this story comes in, why didn't said OP attack the freaking BOP's or, even 1 of the raptors or, 1 of the spheres that hang around the cubes?
I get that you all vaped the cubes and boss quickly but, there was still plenty of viable enemies to be had by the OP so, I find it really hard to believe their conundrum.

Honestly, we truly "insta-vape" a side--bops included. And I mean insta-vape (which is why it is so fun to do). If op was in a cannon build, then he really had no shot at doing any damage as he could not have targeted anything in time. There was nothing for him to shoot at. Now, if he had chosen the middle, then this thread would not have been started. So, unless he entered the map and immediate went full impulse to a side and unloaded, he really didn't have a chance. In other words, unless he was expecting us, there would be no reason to rush out and attack as fast as possible.
We have taken many people (10k'rs) on ISA runs with us and they are even a taken aback by how fast we clear things. We are used to attacking hard and fast and there is constant movement by us. It is very easy to get "caught out" in dead space even on ISA. Not bragging by any means, it simply is how we have progressed. And, saying it in here does not do it justice. If you would like to go on a run with us to see, then that can be arranged. The main reason we do a 3/2 split on ISA is so that we actually have stuff to shoot at and have enough damage to grab. The current speed record on ISA is 81 seconds. That is essentially a total burst run. It is almost disorienting--even to us.

Im guessing the OP was maybe following a player, targeting the same thing, its how id likely approach the situation, and bear in mind, at the time of the run the OP had no clue as to the hell these guys were going to let loose, or the leaver penalty he was about to recieve. Noone is disputing that it could have turned out different. The game isnt all about point and shoot, positioning comes into it as does target selection. My advice has always been, if you are in doubt, target assit the dps racer who flies right in blazing, they will probably carry the aggro and you wont get dead quicky.

than I suggest the OP get off their duff and, actually move strategically to target quicker or, suffer the consequences!
I have been in PUGS that have vaped enemies as quickly as described, yet I still find plenty of time to get some shots in myself and, not suffer any penalties.
Ok, simply put. Queue for The Cure Space normal. Get in I fly out first to go attack the BoP coming from the right cube area. Two seconds later, boom cubes dead and all the gens are dead..as are all the raptors that spawn as well. About 10 seconds later, Far left cube goes up in smoke, and a few seconds later, the middle one is dead. And all this is long before I can even fly from the first to the second or 3rd cubes. Errr, ok, I'll hail the Kang. Done. Ok. I actually pulled aggro first on the assimilated carrier first, but 5 seconds later it's dead too along with the 2 spheres with it.
And this is where I get a sweet little message. "You have been assigned an AFK penalty for not participating enough." WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How the heck can I "participate enough" when people with all XIV gear and T6/T5u ships are in a NORMAL STF and kill everything faster than I can scratch their paint jobs?
So, in essense, I got the AFK penalty because I: A. was a newer character B. Am in the gearing up process. C. cannot 1 shot everything in sight.
Is that the jist of it? How wonderful that is that new characters are now punished for existing. I supposed EVERYONE is supposed to instantly have XIV gear on T6/T5u ships.
I mean, I was a little perturbed before while on my decently geared characters and there were other more geared players coming into the normal STF and 1 shotting everything, but atleast I could put some hurt on of my own. Now that I'm on a newer character, and am not even ready for the harder content, I can't do it because I won't get any Dilith or marks AND I'll get a nice fat little 2 hour STF ban.
How about forcing high geared players into the appropriate difficulty level so they can't TRIBBLE over newer players like this? Did you guys at Cryptic even think this whole thing through? At all? Talk about frustrating.
OP since delta rising the game is really frakked the hell up and right now doing a PUG or Pick Up Group is more like a dying means of STFs.
Then we go to those elitests who think just because you dont have the best of everything that they can ostericize a person for just trying to play casual.
My advice to you mate is play how YOU want and to hell with what others think

You should/could always operate under the assumption that the other players are heavy hitters. Moving into position as fast as possible, opening up with as much dps as possible to get as much damage done as possible...to the point where he is padding meters (which is usually a bad thing depending on the situation). You dont assist off of other players because what if you find out that they are the kind of player that can blow up a BoP in Cure normal in one volley? If they arent a high dps player then oh well you will have to help them. But if they are then now they've just messed up your approach and offensive buffs and you have to line up to something else.
You have to think about what the other player is thinking. If there are two of you are heading to the same cube area in Cure space and you in the trailing ship you can expect the other person in the lead ship to stop short and attack the BoPs first...see people are predictable like that. When i was playing WoW (god i love making all these WoW references) i would mine ore in Scholazar Basin. If you arent familiar with that zone its a huge circular shaped map, basically a crater. You can mine ore along the edge of the circle or in the middle. When i am out there farming ore and i see a person ahead of me moving in the same counter clockwise direction i know that they are farming ore same as me. Would it make sense for me to stay behind this person farming ore too? no...but see i know that this person will move in a predictable circle pattern all the way around the map. So what do i do? i cut across the middle of the map until i am in front of him, and then i mine the ore in front of him. There are other examples of this too...like when i am leveling in an area and i am trying to clear the way towards an objective but there is someone else there too. I will leave a few targets up because i *know* that this other person will attack them. And when they do that it will buy me the time i need to get to the main objective we are both working on. But i'm the one that is actually trying to slow him down...but he just doesnt know it.
Stuff like that...where you know how people will react when they are presented with a certain situation. Dont attack the BoPs in Cure if there are two of you. Move to within range of the nanites first and attack those. And if the guy you were with ends up being a slow dpser then you help them out on BoPs.
What is the problem ?
* DPS players playing below their level?
* Normal content is too easy?
* The mechanic behind the afk penalty?
* Gear/skill level OP?
* All of the above.

That means pretty much doing an auto-Kamikazi run to make sure you can get on the damage table.. What if you then find out it isnt a high dps group and you have basically pulled a Leroy instead. I can totally see what you are saying and it does make sense, but.. When you are running a normal, appropriate level instance, you shouldn't have too deviate, to far, from a pre-set tactical run.
In a game that screams vitriol at inexperienced pugs, they need to learn the tactics, but now we are saying to them, just to make sure you avoid an afk penalty you will need to perform a kamikze manouver, allthough depending on the group it may actually be Leroy, so be prepared for possible griefing or being called out as a noob.
*mining in wow.. i used to play on a pvp server.. that made any kind of gathering competative lol. My ability to process changing situations has greatly diminished over the past 2yrs so pvp is a no go for nowadays.. was a lot of fun at the time though

Ahh yes, the old "I can do it so you can do it" line, not everyone plays the same, has the same setup, physical ability or reaction time as others. If im confronted with an unexpected situation in anything, it can go 1 of 2 ways -
1. Something will come to mind immediatly, I correct for the unexpected and continue
2. I stop dead, my brain goes into processing mode and takes 'x' amount of time to provide an appropriate, calculated solution.
Granted it isn't an ideal state of play, but thats just how my nuerology works. It is why I never make assumptions about another players ability or methodology based on my own. I dont have all the details. This game is played by a 'many coloured myriad' of player types, and again I reiterate, players should not be having to compensate for bad or lazy coding/gating/balance/tuning.
anyone remember that warning i gave several times about powercreep and timegates walling off new players from even getting started?
kaboom. welcome to it.
along with ego and vapid elitism from older players who are too scared of teh nerf bat to see the power levels in this game need a ****ing hard reset.
Simply put you can't say it's just the power levels. The game is too intricately unbalanced for that. There needs to be a full rebalancing of the game, but if they do that, they may as well go "hey we farked it, how about we release STO 2 instead so everyone gets to pay again for the same TRIBBLE"...
Unless they take a few serious looks at STO and do a buttload of unmonetised work on it, the state of play is only going to get worse.
Chris Robert's on SC:
"You don't have to do something again and again and again repetitive that doesn't have much challange, that's just a general good gameplay thing."
There are people that struggle to to 1K dps, and people that do 100K dps
As long as you use MK X weapons, a t5+ ship, and autofire targets, with 125weapon power level, you are doing much more than 1K.
Or use a carrier and launch pets. They'll do more than 1k dps by themselves (up to 3-5K dps for a few of them).
Really, for any DPS lower than 5K, there are no excuses. Casual, undergeared, whatever, it doesn't matter at this point.
I did 5K long before DR on an undergeared cruiser, using a test build (no a2b and stuff), and I forget to set my power level (base weapon power level was 50, dunno with all the skill/gear). So yeah...

What people 'should' do, and what they actually do, are often very different things. I've seen people not manage to break 1K dps in ISA a few times.

Yes, so have I and, it is usually someone with torps front and aft, stuck trying to kill an enemy by broadsiding with 1 BA firing (at probably 50wp) and, nothing else firing!
So, there really shouldn't be much of any excuse for it really!
3k-5k is soooo freaking easy to accomplish on sooooo many levels, that 1k is like having the dps of the weakest possible shuttle!

Sure is, but like the OP pointed out if he didn't get a shot off before the target got instavaped, he coulda been flying a 100kDPS monster and his actual DPS woulda still been zero.

So, get to work you slug!

And if the guy you were with ends up being a slow dpser then you help them out on BoPs.
if he is vaping everything before the op can get a shot in then i would not consider him a "poser"
"You don't have to do something again and again and again repetitive that doesn't have much challange, that's just a general good gameplay thing."
There are people that struggle to to 1K dps, and people that do 100K dps
There are people who play once in a while, and people who play several hours every day
There are people who want to pew pew in their favourite Star Trek ship, and people who who demand the best of everything
You can't cater for absolutely everyone.
Praetor of the -RTS- Romulan Tal Shiar fleet!
Sure is, but like the OP pointed out if he didn't get a shot off before the target got instavaped, he coulda been flying a 100kDPS monster and his actual DPS woulda still been zero.
