Okay, so I finally had enough EC to buy a bunch of upgrades and accelerators to upgrade my Purple MACO rep rifle to MKXIV. So I did it and figured, why not try for an Ultra Rare? Well, as luck would have it, I tried twice. I filled the bar TWICE, and all it did was return the rifle to me unchanged. It was an incredible waste of DIL and EC for nothing worth that much.
Anyhow, I went in thinking that there was some higher chance of UR and Epic with rep stuff since it has its procs and isn't crafted. I was wrong. No amount of bonuses can give you ANY assurance that ANY upgrade will work.
My advice: AVOID IT. Common sense now that the forum is full of this stuff. But believe me, as awesome as those orange thingies look they are NOT worth the time and effort. I had a guy tell me that I have to work for the best gear in game. I thought to myself, why would I want to feel like I'm working playing ANY video game?
Trust my experience. The upgrading system (as well as R&D) is nothing more than a revolving door of WTFs and ragequits.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.

Mark upgrades are easy. Rarity upgrades... not so much. So unless you're willing to invest in an upgrade and have the means to support said upgrade attempts...
One way some people try to get easy rarity upgrades is to upgrade low level white quality gear. Don't know how effective that is myself, as I upgraded a mk I Piercing Beam Rifle to mk XI or XII and managed to get it to green quality.
Just like anything in this game... its kinda down to the Random Number Gods...

Went the same road down with my Engineering Captain.
Had a bit of luck and some Tactical consoles went to Epic within th eupgrading process (I believe it increased at MK XIII), but that was it then. No other stuff even bothered to upgrade to Ultra Rare even though I threw alot of Upgrade Kits, Boosts and of course dilithium at it. Seems like stuff doesent want to increase in rarity when already at MK XIV.
Lesson learned. No more gambling trying to get stuff to epic.
best way to gamble for epics, upgrade mk II very rare items with experimental parts or at least a very rare, 2 of them for one part if it upgrades once, if not, rinse lather repeat, for pre owned Mk Xii rep gear, welcome to the Casino of "games of chance".

Hmm, thanks for posting that info. I was under the impression that filling the TP bar would gradually increase the rarity upgrade chance. Have not tried to quality improve over XIV yet due to cost but after reading your experience I wont be trying at all. Epic is nice but not tons of lost Dil and EC nice.
not sure what the conditions are that they can run "games of chance" but lockboxes do legally give you something of value for your key, not sure if this meets the quota lol...

There's a lot of shady stuff in this game. I wouldn't be surprised if some of it actually is illegal in at least one of the countries this game is played...

Has anybody been able to unlock higher tier MACO equipment via upgrades, or do I still need to grind for several years to finally get a helmet?
I use MACO ground gear on almost all my chars for almost everything they do. During the upgrade of those components from mk12 to mk14 two lucky rarity upgrades were triggered to ultra rare. Think the armor gets a tox mod and the shield a cap one.

I have done ok with upgrading as far as I am concerned, I put in a mk12 rare and out pops a mk13 rare repeat and get mk14 rare if it happens to crit I get a bonus rarity upgrade if it doesn't then I get what I was expecting so no disappointment.
sure its only a few points on the stats overall on one item upgrade but when you have mk14 on 4 front weapons + 4 rear weapons + 4 shields deflectors ect + 9 or 10 consoles so you have 21-22 item with improved stats that's got to make a difference overall.
and all it costs is to play the game to earn the dil & ec you need to upgrade.
if you want to throw cash at it that's up to you, I am quite happy to upgrade with in game rewards.
sure it will take longer but playing the game to get the rewards to upgrade is half the fun anyway.

All of what you said is true. Except...
The 'easy rarity upgrade' method is to craft a mark II very rare item of your choosing, then get an experimental tech upgrade and a major research booster. As you level the item through the following 4-8 levels (depending on whether you had a crit, and what item type you're leveling), you will have a 20% chance of upgrading your rarity for each upgrade cycle until the TP overflow from the initial upgrade runs out.
This method is also used to get those highly prized [Antiproton [INSERT WEAPON TYPE] Mk XIV [Ac/Dm] [CrtD]x4]s everybody says are best these days - you craft a bunch of [CrtD]x3 weapons, eventually some of them get a 4th [CrtD] modifier if they manage to upgrade to UR, and from there it's just a matter of upgrading to Epic - if you are so inclined. Then you just buy a lockbox ship or two with the money you got yourself.

To be clear, that is exactly what happens once an item is already Mk XIV. Fill the TP bar, rarity upgrade chance increases. If that fails, fill the TP bar again, rarity upgrade chance increases again and gets added to the rarity chance from before. Rinse and repeat until the rarity finally increases. If the Mark of the item is not XIV, then the rarity % chance gets reset every time you fill the TP bar.
So let's say you have a Mk XIV item and fill up the TP bar and that gives you a 5% chance to upgrade the quality (the Research bar). If that fails, you keep that 5%, fill the TP bar again, now you have a 10% chance. If you fail and repeat again, then you have 15%. Eventually it HAS to reach 100% in the research bar, but this could take a LOT of dilithium, EC, and tech upgrades (and crafting materials if you're doing the crafting yourself).
Note that the % chance depends on the item's existing rarity, it's not always +5%; it could be more, it could be less, see my sig.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
I got my advanced fleet phaser beam array from UR to Epic just going from Mk XII to Mk XIII. Didn't have the same luck with the next one, but there's still a whole nother level to go. Personally, I like the excitement of not k owing if its gonna change or not. And who cares if it does? It really doesn't gain that much between the two rarities. Its the level that matters most.
Same here. The only thing I want to upgrade in rarity is the solanae deflector and I already wasted tons of dilithium in it. I crafted experimental upgrades and used rarity booster, but still nothing. I could have upgraded a half fleet starbase with what I wasted for this nonsense. I actually think the same about crafting those special lvl 15 items. Investment versus outcome is just bad unless you are lucky. It seems much cheaper just to safe EC and buy it from exchange or trade channel.

Agreed! It made me rethink about the amount of time and money i spend on to this game. Just one look at my friendlist (over 150-200 friends from over 4 years of playtime) tells the thruth about the current state of this game, they are almoust all gone! Cryptic really needs to rethink this whole lotto crafting they have.
I tryed to make a decent Science "exo whats it called" console. Ended on having 3 consoles without any traits. Spending huge amounts of dili just to get worthless piece of ****. And this was at lvl 16 science and 2 blue +50 skillpoint boosters.
Im totally against how r&d was remade. (Get rid of the LOTTO SYSTEM, let us craft what we reallly want/need)

Unfortunately, Cryptic doesn't really care about the contents of a person's friend list. Sad as it may be, the fact is they don't see a need to keep a certain group of people in the game, so long as that group is replaced by another group of equal or bigger size (and, more importantly, willingness to spend money).
What they're failing to see is that there's only so many people on our little marble that can possibly try STO out, and potential players aren't being created as fast as the game's losing existing ones... :rolleyes:

I aim for Mk XIV VR on my gear. I took one item (Borg engine I think) to UR just to see how the system worked, and pretty quickly decided it's a sucker's game, same as you. I couldn't even begin to guess how much dil someone would need to blow through to take all of their gear up to Gold. Millions? And if you have multiple alts? Forget it. The only items I'm going to own that will be UR or Gold going forward will be the ones I get through luck as I take them up to XIV.

This, totally not worth it. I don't bother with rarity upgrades. Chance is just too small. I have one piece of epic gear and that was simply because on my second applying of an upgrade on an ultra rare MkXIII fleet weapon it happened that the RNG gave me a rarity upgrade to epic.

Whoever created this "system" is such a terrible faliure in the branch they're working in that they should be studied in colledges across the world as an example of "how not to do stuff".
If I want to craft 8 VR beam arrays with exactly same mods like I could before, it's next to impossible now. At least without trying Kahless knows how many times to equip the entire ship with beam arrays with same mods.
If level 60 is the new "roof" paired with Mk XIV epic gear, I should be able to get that mark and rarity of gear by playing the game and piling up enough resources. Not be submitted to the will of the RNG after I did all of that.

To be honest, I think it would be better if they did it like an actual video game. Something along the lines of finishing ALL for DR, or a 25-part mission, or maybe unlocking epics upon completion of EVERY rep AND making Fleet Admiral. There are ways to make it ridiculously difficult and still be within the bounds of reason. This "maybe you might get something nice but we don't care enough to let you have it" bull**** isn't realistic or fair to ANY of us. Even the richest players are being screwed -- I suspect it's more likely to score a bugship from a lockbox than it is to upgrade to epic a single time.

Upgrading to Epic is easy, it's getting enough dil to make it worthwhile that's not. The Dil grind has intensified beyond all reason now. It's one of the strangest decisions I've seen to have a major and limited currency used to upgrade gear. I don't actually know of another game that gates Upgrading gear in this manner.
To me the spec tree is irrelevant, people will eventually max it out, TRIBBLE it. This however holds me back from even wanting to spend time in the game.

My Bio Neural Gel Pack console sits at 66% rarity increase chance now. Somehow it doesent want to increase in rarity now.
Either very bad luck or the console is bugged.

Afaik, grind, it's a specialty item so I can't see them ever making them craftable.q
