Really, who announced this, and where??
It was announced on the Launcher. It was on the Launcher 3 hours ago when I was about to log in - and I have no way of knowing how long it was on the Launcher before that. But anyone trying to get into the game in, at least, the last 3 hours saw it in red letters. Ignoring it is not the same thing as it not being there.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
It was announced in the launcher (not arc, the actual game launcher) and was there for at least the last 6 hours.
I didn't see the launcher, I only logged out of the game, so didn't relaunch. Regardless, if it was up 6 hours ago, wouldn't it have made sense for them to be making the "Attention Captains: STO will be coming down in 30 (15, 5...) minutes" that they make, even when it is the every-week expected maintenance? Not just a single, "STO will be coming down shortly."? When is "shortly"? Apparently it was at the top of the hour, but it turns out it wasn't even that!! Really now...

Something probably broke, they've got to fix it. Doesn't matter what, its a large integrated technological system and you have absolutely nothing at stake besides what the output of all that is (I'd only be worried about what if I was somehow responsible for a given component). Unfortunate that it happened but them's life with technology.

Yes, EXACTLY THAT. Cryptic needs to prop up their operation (which is no longer viable given their over-specialized economy and questionable administration) via our EC holdings. They needed to shut STO down to do that too because we might mob rush ESD.

Ditto the above posts: would be nice to actually have word about what is actually being done, especially when there is a "...check forums for details..." note included in the notice about the downtime.
Love the game; love the content. But, where you all (Cryptic/PWE) get extremely low marks is in communication with your player base!
Seriously, most of us would be cool with things you need to do (except the nerfs - especially the the "surprise!" nerfs...), but what we get really chapped about is the, "Oh this is what we DID," and the typical NON-explanation about things like today's "Account Server Maintenance."
Sure, we know stuff happens, but at least send out your Chief Hamster to give us the skinny when it does...

This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Account server is not shard..... The account server has been down for maintainence before and it has not bought the shard down. Also when the server came down it was announced "Emergency" not "Scheduled"

I surmise this emergency maintenance is due to experience point reward vs. amount required issues. One of my fleet mates noticed it he was getting the correct increased reward per the patch notes, but the cost for each level of specialty, (I think) was 3 times what it was before.

I think this is tied to ARC, it's just had an update, a "new" account security feature appears to have been added that they call "ARC Defender", it basically ties your account to a registered PC, ie the first one you log into ARC with after the update.

Love the game; love the content. But, where you all (Cryptic/PWE) get extremely low marks is in communication with your player base!
