Um, nope. MS isn't in the habit of giving their OS (no matter what version, currently supported or not) away for free; so if you're asking is there a legal copy of Vista available for free from MS - Nope.

That said, the minimum system reqs on the Arc support page for STO still list WinXP (SP2) (or better) - so if the launcher is actually telling you it needs Vista - Cryptic/PWE hasn't updated the minimum specs on their ARC and STO support pages. (link to the support page is question - link)

The speed at wich the game patches is not (necessarily) related to the Operating system. Much more likely your hardware is set up poorly, or some of the hubs along the way are slow.

BTW, my son runs STO on a very old Windows XP laptop... Purrs like a kitten.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

I think my computer has pubescent mood swings. Some times it does purr, other times I have to lower the graphics all the way down. Other times I can run them at full/near full. My computer is special that way. But I cleaned it up recently, and it seem to be working nicely

Just as a tip if you do end up upgrading your OS. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT waste you time/install Vista. Skip right to Win 7.

you can usually find a legit old OS for cheap online if you are broke -- it is fractions of the amount of the most current OS.

win 7 would be your best bet, if you do that.

Yeah MS has dropped support for XP. I only use Windows 7 on STO. I did try Windows 8.1 on it it's better on Windows 7 box. I use to play it on laptop but now it's on desktop with 27-inch LED HD Monitor. Of course the other way was on 40-inch HDTV with TrueHD 7.1 surround amp.

Anyway try to get Windows 7 there are online retailers selling older software cheaper. MS does give software away for free but only Office now on certain hardware platforms.
