Alien character customization: buggily bound colors

So I'm trying to create some custom alien crew-men, and am running into a strange problem I didn't encounter when I first started playing. For some reason the 'skin pattern', 'ear color' and 'eye color' selections are inseparably bound together: change one and all three change, with no ability to lock them/prevent this. This means if you want a character with blue eyes, his/her pattern/makeup/body accessories must all also be blue, or you'll have to go without a pattern/any makeup/any alien body accessories. It's really pretty limiting. Any fix pending?

Sometimes randomizing will help debind them. Other times you're just stuck.
