As a captain who has had the pleasure of flying both ships I can say the avenger is a much better choice. Turn rate and its ability to cloak makes it a deadly combo. I did enjoy the refit but it was very slow and I found that I died a lot more in it regardless of its extra hull. Also the avengers special console is an amazing weapon and extremely useful.

Superior Durability ++
Boff Flexibility ++ Less Maneuverable --
Less Armament Flexibility (Beams only) --

"Aesthetically Pleasing" facts are absolutely irrelevant strength should always beat design
i used both, fleet assult cruiser and avenger, and for me
the avenger does outstrip the assult cruiser in almost all important states
and it is really a very beasty ship as beam- or cannon- or torpedoboat ... and makes much fun to fly

OP, have you looked at the Fed Tac Command Battlecruiser yet? It sits right between the two ships you are looking at mission profiles with more, pretty much everything.

Aesthetics do mean something. I looked at the high performing stats of the Avenger when it came out and saw a great ship. Then I saw the ship model.
I didn't fly it since it looked horrible. It makes Intel ships visually amazing and that says a lot.
I would have rather flown a Lv40 Star Cruiser with Single Cannons and Turrets than the Avenger.
respectfully, the avenger class battle cruiser actually does fit the classic definition of battle cruiser.
a battle cruiser is a light battleship. it is a ship that by definition can smash anything smaller than it, and run away form anything larger than it. its a battleship that deletes armor in favor of speed and firepower. it wasn't until the late war fast battleships made the battle cruiser obsolete.
personally, I consider the avenger to be everything that we had hoped the chimera to be, and wasn't until the last of its most recent upgrades. fleet t5u chimera is an interesting beast again.
the special torpedo platform weapon is a nifty surprise too. I also have the space mortar console for assaulting heavy targets.
I run a slight hybrid. 2 dual heavy ap canon, 2 dual ap canon, 1 dual beam array fore, and 1 Omni cutting beam and 1 Omni ancient ap aft. and a torp launcher aft.
I can fire all of my energy weapons into my foreword arc, and fire at will with the limited beam weapons means I am ok when attacked by fighters. the Omni beams cover me when I am off target.
I fleet mine consoles in engineering left over from my chimera build that handle durability and turn rate, so I have quite acceptable turn and durability.
my latest change is the ap torpedo, but I haven't tested it out yet because I am still enamored with my t6 breen carrier with two hangers full of purple swarmers.
I also have the mogh battle cruiser and its build similar, except I have the plasma torpedo launcher forward and 3 turrets aft. she is also mainly disruptors. also a good ship build.
one thing I would like to note, one of the other members in my fleet has an avenger he mounted 5 dual beam arrays fore, and 3 Omni beam arrays aft. that's an intense outlay of fire power.
Aesthetics are subjective to the eye of the beholder.
Also some think the Avenger looks a bit like a T5 Constitution throwback design upgraded for the 25th century. It's all subjective.
As far as performance goes the Avenger is superior.
I agree with you, but aesthetics have different levels of importance to different people. personally, my avenger has fleet pylons with tabs left on. but then I have the blue windows and the whole thing is dark almost black with black accents.
I think it looks like a larger, meaner voyager with the low nacelles and very dark hull.
frankly, with the low nacelles, a case could be made for the avenger being an offshoot of the intrepid class.
You can go either BFAW or Cannons, the boff seating allows for both options.
You can trade ltcom and com level engineering for awesome Intel powers. Override system safetys and surgical strikes.. alogn with emp probe.. intel team... dance-dance-revolution-cloud....
You also get intel-scanning which will allow you to slap on a massive debuff onto your target every 15 seconds and basically subnuke buffs of a specific category.
The Ship trait raises your defense for free.
All of this works perfectly fine in a aux 2 bat build.
You get your powers on global cooldown, which means more intel fun.
Being able to run your systems at 140 power + massive debuffs + several options for "no u don't" escape moves beats both the avenger and the assault variants.
My 2 cents.
Although i suggest you wait for any surprise new ship releases.
