I have noticed that the Demolition Teams starship trait sometimes targets things that should not be targeted like the Vaadwaur Polaron Barrage targets. The same issue is with chained attacks like Refracting Tetryon Cascade and Isometric Charge.

In this picture we see the Refracting Tetryon Cascade bouncing between the Vaadwaur targets, and the red circle is from Demolition Teams targeting the barrage targets.

This is the same thing, except here you can see by the yellow "Critical" text that the abilities are indeed hitting these things, only it has no effect and simply uses up a charge.
Isometric Charge also bounces between these things but it is harder to show that with a screenshot.
EDIT: On another note, Demolition Teams will not collect more than 3 charges before it loses a charge, so it's impossible to get it to detonate - I parked myself 0.5 km away from a battleship and waited and it never got above 3 charges; it would always drop to 2 and then quickly go back up to 3.

We recently checked some changes that we hope will improve the chaining of effects to unintended targets, such as what you've mentioned with Isometric Charge. These changes will also, hopefully, curtail the bad behavior we've witnessed from abilities like Nanoprobe Infestation and Active Immunity Infestation. I can't say exactly when these changes will appear on Tribble or Holodeck, at this time.
