Haha right OP like I haven't already seen you slandering Cryptic in the first place. Yeah I am sure to take the words you say as the truth. Keep going, you're so brave.
I hope everyone who renamed to Geko has their character automatically renamed to "Miss piggy" and has their renaming privileges revoked for 1-2 weeks.
It's be even better if their characters automatically equipped a Miss Piggy Costume and got uncontrollable urges to chase after random Kermit the frogs which appeared out of nowhere.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
Edit: Forget it, I'm just editing this all out in case a mod rolls through for discussing moderation, and because the discussion is pretty stupid anyway.
Ok,that has to be the dumbest argument so far....just naming your toon Geko is not the same as impersonating a Dev.Besides,in game Devs and GM's are clearly identifiable by their tags on their toon and in chat, only really, really dumb people would fall for such an impersonation.
I'm not surprised something like this happening at all...Cryptic always has these 'crackdowns' when the community is displeased with Cryptic's 'design decisions'.
its not dumb its a security system that prevents people from abusing certain names and/or their privileges.
i was given teile an other company emailname because my bosses had the same surnames.
it may sound dumb for you, but that's it why all these little textes are for. "Batteries not included, there is no food appearing by snipping your fingers.."
people sue companys for everything, so the companys build safe walls.
Yes, it is in the ToS. But does that really make a 24 hour ban necessary?
Imagine a new, fresh player wandering in who has no idea of thedev named Geko. This new player makes a Saurian and thinks they're being clever by naming it Geko, because Saurians look like Geckos. Now imagine how off-put that new player is when they find out that they've been banned for using the name.
Simply making it an unusable name like Enterprise would do the trick. Banning for 24 hours? That's just not right.
I had a "badname" before, he got banned because of something else he did I am sure.

This thread is pure trolling. The OP's trying to cause trouble to add to the DR rage. And I bet his "Number of people banned" is totally random just so he has "Evidence". Sorry dude. If your friend broke a rule, he broke a rule. It would be no different in any other MMO.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

I am not saying that is what is happening, just that, most probably, that is the reason for the ban, if it is genuine at all. I dont agree with it. I think a name is a name (unless, for example, we had a dev called CPTAWESOMESAUCE and a player/players decided to name their toons that I can see that as an issue as it is an original, unique name associated with a dev and therefore could lead it confusion in-game)
Geko is rather common, to be honest. Still, the devs will interpret and utilize the EULA as they see fit. Rabblerousing and encouraging others to knowingly duplicate said violation is a direct violation of the EULA and can, if they chose, lead to a long-term if not permanent banning.

Dude... it's 24 hours... 1 day... it's not like he was perma-banned.... 1 day... on a weekday...
really this is a slap on the wrist. He broke the EULA, knowing obviously. Cryptic came down on the light side with a simple 1 day ban. 24 hours. Hell probablyl with life going on that's what... 4 hours of game time he lost. Boo friggin hoo.

beacuse its good to post handles on the forums and other personal info like mails?
You do realize it's against the EULA to impersonate a GM/DEV, yes? Not that this is happening - but I'll wager that is the reason behind the banning.
I understand that the 24 hour ban/renaming of toons merely because they have the name Geko makes about a smuch sense as my wanting to force everyone else in the world to change their name from 'Robert' but still... their game, their rules.
Don't know him but I am willing to bet he didnt "impersonate" a gm.
He said he got banned for just having his name as Geko.
If he said "Hi I am a GM" that would be impersonating a GM.
Also in most games GM's tells are in a different color and is specially marked... to indicate it is not a normal tell from some other player.
And if they really wanted to stop it... they can just add it to the prohibited names list when you try to name a toon.

You totally missed the point. The length of ban doesn't matter. It's the fact that you are banned at all for using a name. As I said earlier, simply making it unusable is a much cleaner and more logical fix.
not only that but he was not even in zone chat or anything. His toon was level 17 i think and he was leveling up.
btw he was a DR pack buyer...you know ...the expensive one.
yea ,just go read the dev list to see that one of them is John .
going to report all Johns in game
It's entirely up to PWE how to interpret their own ToS and/or when to enforce what rule. John is very common name; I couldn't see them ban over that. Naming a toon Geko, though, serves only one purpose: to you, you know, impersonate Geko, the dev.
Don't know him but I am willing to bet he didnt "impersonate" a gm.

Or, I don't know, you can take personal responsibility for your actions and like... don't do it. It's in the EULA not to do it. You choose to do it, it's obvious what the dev names are if you've been around longer then a couple of months, and the devs can see how long you've been a member of STO. He did it, knowing exactly why he was naming his name Geko (else his "friend" would be on here crying a river about it) and he got slapped down... lightly...

No. But you still have no evidence one way or another. Its your word alone. And based on your tone in this thread, you're trying to cause trouble by announcing a 1 day ban as something world ending and pretty much threatening the game with some form or retaliation through YouTube and Steam.
Think about how that looks to the rest of us on the forums for a minute.

He got badnamed and he will have to rename his toon after the ban.
You cant impersionate a GM because GMs have purple GM tags in chat.He was leveling up and only chat in a pvp chat ,not even talking about his name or anything.

Or logically you could just not do it. You know like I said in my previous post, take some personal responsibility for your actions, try to grow two brain cells, and don't do stupid stuff that you know will get you banned.

you sure need more than 2 brain cells and you tell others to do it lol

Tell me, and be honest to yourself now, what do you think would happen if I suddenly changed my name to 'askray' or or something? That alone would constitute impersonating, whether I said 'I am a mod.' or not, as the name itself (falsely) implies so.

It's impersonating when said name is that of any PWE official, forum leader (...), employees or agents, etc. Not complicated. At all.

I agree that simply outright refusing the name would be better. Like I can't name a boff T'Pal or anything.

But aren't the forum names the same as your in-game handle?
nope... my forum name is totally different from my in game handle.
no ,not everyone has the ingmae handle on the forum
either way this is not important because getting people banned for all stupid reasons doesnt matter ...till it happens to you at least.
Actually in your case I'm going to tell you to use just one. It would be an improvement.
