Well to be honest I thought the person flying the defiant was a kid, my reasoning behind that is I couldn't see an adult private messaging me out of the blue to tell me that. So I replied back not wanting to be too rude to a youngster who didn't know better. Being a kid they may not have known their comment was rude, they may have thought they were being helpful. So in turn I took the opportunity to try and educate them on the glaring mistake they were estimating a ships worth.
It was obvious their sole basis for a ships worth was based on DPS. By pointing out that they were blowing up far more than they were making kills I was hoping to teach them a ships worth shouldn't be determined by any one attribute. Unfortuantelly they like many who play this game were convinced of the superiority of DPS over any other ship type or attributes. If they would have let me go in first and grab the aggro they would have been much more effective but so convinced were they of their ships superiority they charged in guns a blazing only to blow up seconds later. Teamwork is more effective than DPS in most cases, I imagine they have disdain for sci ships as well that have the ability to heal them and keep them in the battle.
I must confess I did take amusement and satisfaction in watching them blow up and I couldn't help PM'ing asking "Where'd you go?"
My main reason for this post wasn't to vent any frustration (I found the whole ordeal highly amusing) but to hopefully educate others who are DPS fanatics.
LOL, the fact that someone in a Defiant was talking **** is awesome. You should pat him on the head for trying really hard.
Oh I dunno, I fly a Fleet Defiant, and I hold my own quite well tyvm. I haven't waded into the Voth stuff much, just the story missions, but I can and do solo parts of the Borg STF's frequently.
I do agree though anyone talking **** about anyone elses ship, is a douche of the highest order and very very insecure with themselves, their equipment and.or their abilities.
"Go play with your DPS in the corner, I don't care how big it is." ~ Me "There... are... four... lights!" ~Jean Luc Picard
Those are the types I refer to as "DPS Elitists"... they're noobs who really don't get that supposedly-impressive DPS numbers carefully parsed to be as high as they can, regardless of whether it's effective or not, means squat if the ship can't survive anything outside a carefully constructed team (preferably with a healer to make up for their lack of survivability, of course).
You find them around the place, they're the ones saying "DPS is King!" whenever someone suggests having hull armor rather than another damage-dealing console.
These are the types who go into a mission that requires strategic surgical strike like STF Cure, and Scatter Volley/Fire At Will at everything, just so their DPS can be really really high even though it actually achieves nothing.
The worst are the PvP versions of these. I've noticed that this particular type of PvPer seems to believe that anything done in a team-based PvP must necessarily be better than anything done in PvE (anything, ever... doesn't matter what), therefore even if their PvP playstyle is failing miserably, it's still superior. Basically, any failure of a PvP build is a failure of the mission, not the PvP build. Sounds like your "emergency power to the warp core breach for extra DPS!" friend was one of these.
Odd yes, but (putting on my best Khan impression) you do encounter oddballs... in space!
By contrast, there was another thread about people who like to play a "Star Trek" style build, and I count myself as one of those too. Every ship has a torp, as well as energy weapons. Every ship has some sort of survival ability. And getting killed in a mission is a 'fail', getting killed multiple times means that "something's wrong with my build". In such a build, the ideal is where your damage is high enough to limit the enemy's ability to damage or kill you... but if the battle becomes prolonged, you can still survive.
My Reman tac is in a T'Varo, and can survive STF Elites, Tholian Red Alerts, and any other PvE mission. Being in a Defiant is no excuse for dying!

It's funny you mention that, as I do the same with my Rom Tact, but I consider the T'varo to be superior to the Defiant. Rather, I fly my T'varo like the Defiant fought in the show, as a high speed dog fighting raider. I can't wait to upgrade it to T5U.
I started playing this game because I wanted to play the defiant and was disappointed with the ship when I got there. As for Federation Escorts I much prefer the Advanced Escort line, including the MVAE, MU AE, MU Patrol Escort. They are much more my cup of Earl Grey.
Thanks for the Advanced Light Cruiser, Allied Escort Bundles, Jem-Hadar Light Battlecruiser, and Mek'leth

I had a defiant challenge my galaxy a while back. Not 5 minutes in he gave up and decided to fly in circles until I killed him. He realized he couldn't even get through my shields much less damage my hull. Dps is great, but doesn't mean jack squat if you can't get through shields and survive long enough to win.

Umm, mission or STF?
Because honestly the last romulan mission with Charva where I am dumped at point blank range at a dead stop in front of a fleet I always die once.
Whereas in an STF, if I die only once it is a success, no death is a miracle. And more than three I need to stop replacing sleep with coffee. . . (Yes all same ship/build)

In truth I'd have been better off just following your advise. I didn't make any headway with anything I said even with the proof right before his eyes.

Just tried that one again in the T'Varo, on Elite level. Died first time, but went out and back in to reset that battle. That second time, the game put the support fleet in front of my ship. Didn't die the second time. Will try again in the sci ship, but seems that it's a mix of skills: Eng team to counter the viral matrix hit, haz emitters to counter plasma, and FAW to get some of the torps. I'll also evasive the heck to the back of the fleet to see if that helps.
actually he sounds more like the typical starfleet officer these days. for the same reason people on ESD turn off zone chat.
There are a lot of embarassments to Starfleet these days.
Seriously though I typically fly a Vesta or an Oddy, both are built to give out distinctly average DPS but are otherwise fine tuned towards survivability. Shields, hull, abilities designed to heal. My philosophy is usually to outlast the opponent.
Turns out I'm absolutely terrible in a scimitar. By nature I seem to require a fairly sturdy ship. My KDF character currently flies a Mirror Qin and my Romulan a Deinos. I do best in balanced ships set toward survival.
Why does the Mogh get so much flak while the Avenger gets glorified as on of the top tier ships? They're exacrly the same in all stats except the mogh has the advantage of an built-in cloak while the fed version needs a console from another zen-ship. I really don't get it.
probally because the Avenger looks like its made from Lego while the Mogh is a thing of beauty.

Isn't a pvp "dps vapor build" normally equiped with performance high end equipment? If this is true he is in big trouble only exceeding your dps by 100 points. It sounds as if he has one alpha strike and to prayer of escape after that.

I was Klingon before Klingon was cool.
That Defiant pilot has no idea what he's doing, I own a fleet defiant myself.
My solution with her is to have 50/50 split with both battlefield resilience and fire power
My Boff layout is a reflection of that
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

What a silly criticism. Nothing about pve content requires builds of maximum efficiency. The game is easy. I think it is far more interesting to come up with curious setups and tailor your build to the way you enjoy flying. However some enjoy min/maxing for ultimate farming capability. I say if that's what you want, more power to you.
Why bash builds when optimum setups are unnecessary in the current meta?
