Todays livestream just cut off. Over 1000 people are waiting around. Apparently STO lost Internet, which is hard to believe for a SF based tech company. Guess things have fallen from the heady days of the DOT Com bubble...

Servers and their offices aren't even on the same half of the continent are they? Quite possible for a telecomms unit to fail miserably as this appears to have done.

Uncontrollable stuff happens even to the most prepared of us.

Cryptic does not own the internet. They are subject to the whims of their IP provider just like everyone else. We have been getting updates via Twitter.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

No, they are not. Servers are in the Boston area and Cryptic is in the SF bay area on the other end of the country.

If I'm not mistaken, it was also the PWE building where Smirk works that lost internet which is in a whole other city from the Cryptic offices.

See, I thought this was going to be about the Phantom.

    Eclipse w/o BOFFs > Phantom w/ BOFFs

Correct. Cryptic is in Los Gatos, PWE is in Redwood city and PWE has lost internet atm.
Yes, I'm that Askray@Batbayer in game. Yes, I still play. No, I don't care.

This would not have happened if BranFlakes was still around. He would have remembered to feed the hamster. :D

Yes, your nonconstructive criticism will help such a great deal, and will make the devs who are hard at work trying to get everything back feel sooo much better about something they had absolutely no control over.

It's sunny, 70 degrees, and gorgeous here in Boston so maybe server maintenance?

The only livestream I would be interested in is one from flyingtarg piloting a 5 tactical console bird of prey all decked out with a targ captain and targ crew snorting at each other for communication purposes.

No kidding. I'm pretty sure I saw some death threats and legal threats over a silly game code. Ridiculous.

For a tech company is a bit surprising they couldn't just piggy back one of the hundreds of Internet access services in SF, though if they are in Redwood City it might not be quite that easy.

Any office building in downtown SF has access to dozens of wifi spots you can quickly access with a credit card, not to mention SF has city wide wifi for $20 a month I believe.

Why didn't Smirk or Trendy just take their laptop down to Starbucks, which are literally on every block in California. Even if they couldn't stream they could at least have answered questions in chat.

smirk and trendy are PWE employees, therefore work from redwood city. and its quiet possible they cant leave their office just to go to starbucks and get their wifi.

P.S. some starbucks have really ****ty wifi and they wouldnt beable to stream.

It never got that far as their internet crashed about 2/3 of the way in. We only got to see about 1 minute of the Scryer Class before it went boom.

Having visited a starbucks or two in Redwood City, I can assure you that there is no stream-worthy wifi to be had.

Wow... This has to be the single most mis-informed OP this month...
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

from what i gathered within a few moments of checking at a glance without really trying; the holo leeta code made its way out, a second code was let loose im presuming was the free r&d pack code, but it seems to of been borked, so that didnt get anywhere, without the rest of the feed, it was just a failboat from that point on.

Yeah, finally a livestream not on a Friday so I can watch live and it goes kaput and no code for a goodie at the end. :(
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

Yep the Holo leeta code was apparently put on reddit but the stream code could never be gotten to work. Each time you try it you are told to log into STO and try again, and to contact support if the error persisted.

I seriously doubt contacting support would do anybody any good though.

Well, apparently, it's true. :P Smirk died less just shooting things in the cruiser than he did using a full boff setup in the escort.

anyways the code will allegedy start working whenever their internal network issues are resolved. might be a while.

    I was watching.

Technical issues like that are simply not something we can blame Smirk for.

In my opinion (and i speak as someone who has been sharply critical of Smirk in the past) he actually coped with the blackout extremely well.

Contact was re-established via twitter until he could get back on the twitch chat.

Messages were informative and frequent enough.

Honestly, in the circumstances, I can't see what could have been done better.

yes the stream had some technical difficulties , We dont know the full specifics , someone could have tripped a cord , someone took the wrong piece gear out of service , .... etc .

smirk and trendy should be commended for communicating the problem , and trying to do something for the viewers . ive seen other CMs in other games that wouldnt just say anything till a forum post the next day or not at all , till they re plan the event .
