Anybody been playing ksp lately? I tried it again when the 64 bit update landed and a lot was broken, not surprising really. I figured I’d wait a bit before trying again. Maybe its time to give it another go?

Something that I had never really thought about till after I stared playing ksp is how magically advanced the tech would have to be let ships do what they do in trek and scifi in general even if you don’t take ftl flight into account.

Well... when you're able to harness the power of a matter/antimatter reaction that is most likely more powerful than a modern nuclear reaction...

I think the tech would be more advanced...

Sure, Matter/Antimatter allows you to have huge amounts of energy--even without any sort of "warp drive", an antimatter rocket can get you up to relativistic speed (where time dilation becomes a factor). The limitation then becomes that you don't have any "inertial dampers", which means that you are pretty much limited on crewed ships to about 20 G's (200 m/s^2) in short bursts and 4 G's (40 m/s^2) sustained for hours/days/longer periods, which means that it takes months to get to relativistic speed in the first place.

Just tried it. I use a 64-bit machine, and all seemed functional.

Edit: they have gone through some breakthroughs in rocket stability recently. Just be careful when you apply physics warp, and you should be fine.

Laws of thermodynamics as applied to life: 0 - You must play the game. 1 - You can't win. 2 - You can't break even. 3 - You can't quit.

Just loaded it again, will give it a try. I’ll start loading mods tomorrow I hope that one scalable fairing mod works I really liked that one. I might load the warp mod. I did before but I hated how it forced me to strap radiators to everything and the fancier your solar panels ie more efficient ones made you need even more of them. No idea if that’s more realistic or not. Could be I think thats what the mod maker was going for. When I see pictures of real satellites and stuff they don’t seem to have them, but it’s not like I really know what I’m looking at a lot of times.

As for magic trek tech. yup access to crazy amounts of power would go a long way into making what we see in trek less magic and more something that could one day be. I think what ksp got me to see better is the scale of that power.

The one that struck me first was the idea of the orbits we see in trek often they are low orbit but stationary. Meaning they are hanging low over a particular location I think the term is powered orbit for what you see in star trek. Which in ksp would not work for long since you’d run out of fuel. Yes you can get into stationary orbit and low orbit as well but those are not in the same place. Well maybe on some moon but not kerbin. You need to find the spot where your orbital speed would match the speed of the planets rotation and on kerbin that’s a lot further out. What you would see is a rocket that would never stop firing its engine and once it stopped it would start to fall. In star trek the ships are doing just that they are holding position wherever they want them to for as long as needed.

It would be an honor to know the uss flyingshoebox will be incinerating the life out of borg and dinosaurs people alike and whoever else might show up in the rep grind.

I tend to use spice weasel name a good deal, always image the captain saying bam when enemy ships exploded.

Oh awesome I’ve seen the service modules on the forum but never used it. Kept running into ram issues by that point do want to give it a try though. I have used the fustek mod before really liked them. Your stuff looks really good. There are so many awesome mods for ksp. I would load some and then play for a bit and then load more then play for a bit more then load more and run out or ram. With any luck the 64 bit should extend that chain of events a good deal further.
