2nd or 3rd in CE/CEE? Is that possible?
I thought finishing 1 st was standard. I have gone in with an Oberth and finished first.

CE(E) tends to give first place more for heals than DPS. Got bored on my KDF Sci, was spamming the DSD set consoles, especially the "shield inversion beam" and got her the first ever first place...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Is this correct, beams are better for overall DPS than cannons? I have one torpedo forward, but none aft. Was told one torpedo would help the DPS, but more than that would be a waste. That's news to me. I always found my DPS to be better on a single target when using cannons. Is this because of the new beam overload that suddenly beams are better than cannons?

To be honest, it all depends on different factors. Some of these factors are:
1- When you start and stop the combat log.
2- Whether or not the enemy can regenerate shields quickly, or fast.
3- How many enemies you are hitting all at once.
4- Whether or not you are hitting things that cannot be killed yet (like gates while generators are still up).

I have been able to get extremely high DPS in the Vortex, and only attack three enemies during the entire mission on elite. I did it to prove to the others with me that it was possible. I was using beams, and BFAW.

Also, there are other aspects of STO besides DPS. It is good to have high DPS, but you will reach a point where you will need to make a choice. You will need to choose between DPS, and quicker kills.

You mean single cannons? Yeah, they don't seem to do enough for the loss of arc vs beams. Dual cannons are good. My main beef with cannons is that their boff powers are LT+ while beam powers start at Ensign. Never understood why Cryptic did that.

I've never tried the A2Batt build, mainly cause I'm a contrary person. :D I see 'everyone' doing something, I won't do it. I look forward to reading the rage when it eventually gets hit with the nerf sledgehammer.

PvE is easy on STO, use what you want. If I'm playing with you, as long as you aren't exploding every 5 seconds I'm happy w/ teammates. Like that CEE from a couple days ago... it went on for TWENTY minutes before I left. It was like I was in the old style CE event!

nope dual heavy cannons. Perfect for CCE. But yeah, having only 1 power sucks. I use A2B to bring it go global. It would be hard using them in pvp. There I stick with beams on anything slower than an escort.

Long long ago I used cannons on my old vorcha in pvp, they did great but now everyone is so fast it's too hard to get in arc.

Personally, I would love ships that used different tactics. I have two ships that have no other purpose than to fire so much energy at a ship that it melts. One is a cannon armed monster of a Chimera class destroyer. It's got the best fleet weapons I could buy, all dual heavies and turrets. It's meant entirely for foward DPS. I've got an Odyssey class cruiser (standard, not C-store), armed with top quality beam arrays, meant to be an AOE monster with fire at will, clearing the shields of everything around me so the escorts can clean up.

I would love to have a ship that could handle nothing but torpedoes, a ship that's purpose is to deal as much kinetic damage as possible when my team gets their shields down. I would love to have a dreadnought carrier, which only has offensive capability in the form of fighters or frigates, with turrets or cannons for point defense and light offense.

Currently, STO is a DPS builder. You build a ship that can shred a battleship in under a minute, that's pretty much it. Escorts dominate PvE, escorts with dual heavy cannons and turrets (or 360 beams).

Aren't those philosophy questions always fun?

Anyways, beams are the superior choice for anyone wishing to maximize their sustained dps.

Beams would beat out cannons in pvp if you only have one target. Overcapped bfaw is some broken hoodoo.

Any gamers. I'm talking about people that build toward mechanics, should use beams, it's less skill and more rewarding on the meter...

    Cheers

P.s. Torps are always a bad idea in terms of dps. You can make a torp boat dps fairly good...but it's nothing compared to cannons and completely shadowed compared to beams.
    Chive on and prosper, eh?

No, it doesn't make you a 'scrub'. You're just making things harder on yourself.

Hit-per-hit, Single Cannons will do more damage than Beam Arrays, but they come with the crippling caveat that you really need to be within 5km to see decent damage. When you combine that with the fact that you'd normally run a single cannon build on a slow-turning cruiser and you need to always have your moving targets in your forward 180, you wind up with odds being stacked higher and higher against you compared to a Beam cruiser that has an effective range of 8km, with wider firing arcs and very noticeable broadsiding potential.

It might be a bit more recommendable if Single Cannons could be mounted aft; you could use an inverted weapon layout with vacuum builds or just omni-directional close-range skirmishers.

I used beams long before I knew how to use the effectively. I used them because the only ships I ever saw use cannons on screen were BoPs and the Defiant, and since I wasn't using that type of ship, naturally, I used beams. I was flying cruisers back when this game was "Escorts Online" because those were the ships that appealed to me.

Nowadays I know about buff-stacking and overcapping and firing at poor Will. I'm no longer punished for the choices I would have made anyway.

Philosophy, eh? No one cares what you use except you. If this question bothered you enough to ask, then the answer is probably yes.
