Enjoy your ground PVP for a couple of months then be ready to buy the new ground traits that will come in the new delta x2 lockbox's....
Honestly the lockbox ground traits haven't been that great for the most part. The Species 8472 lockbox traits were all worthless because they penalized the player when activated. The New Romulus lockbox traits were pretty pointless (minor consumable buff trait and vs. inorganic damage buff trait). The Elachi lockbox gave us one great trait (Regenerative Tissue) and one worthless trait (10% chance to do what tac init already does better trait). The Hirogen lockbox brought out a half decent +Expose trait and a very insignificant +DodgeOnFlank trait. Now the latest lockbox has brought out a great damage trait (Vicious) and great trait for science officers only (Savior). So far only about 1 in every 4 lockbox traits are useful for Ground PvP.
For me it seems that it is a whole new trend that started with xindi lockbox.First there were some OP ships and some OP space and ground traits. If you wanted to remain competitive in PVP (ground or space) you had to buy the new traits because they were much better than the old reputations ones obtained from a year time grind.(btw another unfair thing in my opinion)
Yeah, Ground PvP will always run into the new lockbox kit modules. 8472 modules weren't that good, but Xindi brought about some good modules. Two of the Xindi modules even reached overpowered levels. PVP-ing in Sto has become a much expensive endeavor as it was before season 8.5 and it will be much expensive in future I am afraid.
Personally for now I will probably "upgrade" just one ship and wait until the new T6 kdf raptor will be launched. If that ship will be nerfed from start compared to new fed T6 Defiant then I wont buy it and remain with what I already have.
PS: Actually some time ago, somebody told me that he does his PVP in other games and here it just plays for content as it is. In this moment I am thinking that it would be a possible solution for future because if you don't PVP in STO you don't need much and you can easily pass on grinding content like reputation or crafting, don't need to spend a dime on upgrading any ship, don't need to buy new T6 or other new expensive items that will shortly come in new delta lockboxes.
It is to early to take a decision for what I will be doing in near future but stopping to do PVP in Sto became an option for me. I could only play new episodes or new occasionally content that comes now and then and still have my Trek dream from time to time.
Personally, I may not even upgrade my ship considering that Cryptic is just going to release Tier VI Fleet ships to make all Tier V-U ships obsolete. After which Cryptic will probably release Tier VII ships in a year or two to completely rake the playerbase on things already purchased once again. Sorry, I seem to have picked up a pessimistic attitude about the whole matter. It is just I can't get over the fact that Cryptic is expecting us to pay three different times to get the same ship...but with minor improvements. (C-Store --> Fleet Upgrade ---> Tier V-U Upgrade) Yet I must get the upgrade if I wish to PvP because any serious PvPer will have said minor improvements.
That makes whoah too much. 5k Zen for those I listed
I seriously hope the upgrade price to be way lower, like 250 Zen. Nothing more. At least that way I can get around upgrading them all without many problems.

Its a good illustration of Cryptics problem here. This is a SMALL list of ships. The costs are stupid... even at 250 zen to be honest. Considering the "upgrade" is nothing more then Cryptic basiclly allowing you to still fly the ships you already purchased. Not in fact really be on par with the best of the best anymore. Its a massive money sink.
So I suggest you do what everyone else is going to be doing ... assuming your still sticking it out and not leaving in disgust. Choose ONE of the T6 ships that you like purchase it... use it on all your toons... Worry about gear for the 2-3 toons you intend to play... and turn the rest into your farm base.
Wasting your zen on upgrading is just silly. Take the free upgrades... but buy one T6 Cstore unlock ship... and Save a ton.
Scrap all your old ships there gone. If that doesn't sit well your options are 1) Spend 10x more then there worth upgrading all of them... or 2) give up on Cryptic.
I'm going to stick around... but ya I'm not stupid I'll farm myself one free t6 so my farm toons have a ship to fly... for my actual toons I may grab some new lockbox ships if they are in fact T6, other wise I have 20+ toons that will all be in the same ship. lol thanks Cryptic great marketing.
in pvp, it will just be another great big, huge gap in the haves and have nots, between the fresh 50 in their pleb tier 5 mirror ship vs the 14 year olds in their fully advanced tier 5U and tier 6 ships. and not just worse then ever, twice as worst then ever!
RU is all about doubling. doubling the power creep, doubling the grind because EVERY pieces of gear you use now would be considered vender trash at level 60, doubling the gap between developed and undeveloped characters, AND most of all doubling the cost of entry to enjoy the level of competitiveness you have right now. hope you like $40 tier 6 ships, only double what most tier 5 ships cost. it will totally be that much, add in a $5 fleet mod and a $5 tier 5U mod, and you still have something worse then a tier 6 ship!
please, someone, think of a single reason for all this post tier 5 TRIBBLE, other then doubling the cost of playing at the level you do now. how can any of you stand for this what so ever?
I think this says more about the inherent problem of PVP in an F2P online game.
What Cryptic have done is, essentially, quite reasonable unless you PVP. You can run the "free" stuff you get up to T50 and all of the content is accessible, if challenging (isn't that supposed to be a good thing....?).
Players who have invested heavily in existing alts / ships but don't want to grind, can retain those ships or buy a relatively "cheap" upgrade to T5U. Again, though, all PVE content is playable, and slightly easier than the minimal-gear setup above.
Those players who choose to invest fully in T6 will get extra toys to play with - ship mastery, traits, intel BOffs etc - which will make the new content easy / fast (but isn't easy/fast PVE content a bad thing at the moment?)
So for a non-PVPer, the playability of the game is essentially unaffected, unless they run to self-induced pressure to have the best possible ship / crew. T5U offers a middle way for those who are either on a budget, or want a degree of RP in their builds.
Frankly, PVP is already the domain of a time/cash rich elite of players and this won't make things much worse. PVErs, who are the majority of the base, can stroll along at whatever pace they choose.
Part of the issue is that there is only a limited selection of ships that people (outside of minmaxers) care about. That's why we have refits, retrofits and fleet versions of the same ship.
I think this whole move of making old ships obsolete would be easier if they had a completely new lineup of ships that would then be T6. But due to the limited amount of canon ships, they can't do a regular MMO gear succession where they simply introduce new stuff and instead they have to rehash everything over and over.
Paying/grinding for new things because the game evolves? That's the way MMOs work (with paying having become a focus over working for it due to F2P). But it's not really new things that we get. It's the same old ships with a new coat of paint.
And PVP will suffer because the entry barriers will rise. Or does anyone believe that there will be a large selection of competitive free T6 ships?

This and in general it will looks like fleet t5u and lockbox t5u ships will be better than t6 ships as they will have an extra console (11 for ft5u vs 10 for t6) and another 10% hull and shields. Yes they dont have the extra boff but not all t6 ships will even have the extra boff.
Before I could buy a c-store ship like the vesta and have a top level ship, but now it seems I'll have to buy the base ship then buy the upgrade to have a top level ship.
The thought crossed our minds. However, we'd like to keep Fleet Modules specific to purchasing fleet ships and whatever we do for T5-Us to be entirely seperate.
Upgraded Lockbox ships aren't inferior to T6s ships. Existing lockbox ships lack the 13th bridge officer power once they're upgraded and they don't have a Starship Trait, but they generally have superior hull and shield mods. Additionally a T5-U upgraded lockbox/lobi ship will have 11 console slots vs. a standard T6 ship's 10 console slots.
Good question. Here's the breakdown on Fleet ships. Right now, Fleet Ships offer +1 console slot, +10% Hull HP and +10% Shield HP over a standard T5 ship. If you were to upgrade a Fleet Ship to T5-U, it would gain all the benefits mentioned:
-Bonus scaling HP
-Starship Mastery passive abilities
-+1 Console Slot
The short answer to your question is no. They will have 10% better shield and hull than the non-fleet T5-U variant and have +1 console slot.
I think you'll find this statement to not be true once Delta Rising goes live. A T5-U Lockbox/Lobi ships is still an incredibly powerful ship even compared to a T6 ship. Also, your first two points are the same thing. The 5th Starship Mastery level is just unlocking the starship trait.
I hope to be able to answer more questions later today.

This is what I'll be doing. I've already stockpiled slightly more than 2000 zen converted from dil - or rather from 30mil worth of EC via contraband. I won't scrap the ships I paid for, though - I'll just keep them and dust them off for fun now and then.
With rep grinds, fleet grinds, and now crafting trait grinds, I've long given up on keeping more than one toon at the cutting-edge for PvP. I'm disappointed that this will raise the barrier to hardcore PvP, but I no longer care about the game all that much.
Also, it will be interesting to see how T6 ships with an extra BO ability compete against T5-U-Fleet/Lockbox with an extra console and 10% stats boost. At least until T6-Fleet and the first T6-Lockboxers show up.
Uh, no. Endgame PvP will be at level 60. Fresh 50s are just not in it.
assuming they even bother to segregate the pvp ques between 50 and 60. substitute fresh 60 for fresh 50 if you like, its the same thing. and now, with a new post 60 progression path that you keep feeding skill points into, the vastness between fresh and done characters increases exponentially.
Soooo 11 console slot Scimitar?
Will it have 6 tac consoles or an additional engi one?
I'd be much more interested in the Fleet B'rel. 4 Tac consoles? 4 Science consoles (my personal favorite) or will Cryptic keep trolling the KDF and give it 5 Eng consoles? Questions over questions.
I really hope it's 4 science consoles on the B'rel... would allow me to use 4 gravigen consoles instead of 3... *insert evul laughter here*
Or the Excelsior... 5 Tac consoles? Or maybe 5 Eng? Or 3 Sci?
Or the D'derihax... 4 Tac consoles would be great...
Or the T'varo setup would also be interesting... hopefully Cryptic releases a full list of the extra consoles for all ships.
ok, i can live with those upgrade-cost (as long they not cross 500zen). what i not can live with is the guess of t6 fleet ships (we all know on some point they gonna do it) and the fact that lockbox and lobi ships not get a full t6 upgrade (i fully agrre on ability > con-slot).
there's just no sense in it that a ship made of actual technology would be superior to ships like the wells and mobius (best examples. others are undine and voth f.e.).
it's obviously, like many stated in here, that this progression will widen the gap between players in pvp in the long run. what we need is a proper base to go from, like equal starting-conditions for all (i'd say fleet and lockbox-ships can be seen as such, though there are decent differences in efectiveness of certain ships in comparison to others already. though they share some common stats). all this fleet t5, t5-u, fleet t5-u, t6 is just messing the whole base up.
make it all t6, give all new t6 ships that xtra boff and later on, when the point is reached where t6 fleet versions come, give options to bring ships on par for zen again.
No, it will be on par, as long as you get yourself a ship trait from one of the other sources they mentioned.
T5-FU: 11 Consoles, 12 boff abilities, higher shield and hull from the start plus some levelling gain.
T6: 10 Consoles, 13 boff abilities, shield and hull get some levelling gain.
Didn't Cryptic put down for ''Additional Console Slots'': Upgraded T5 - Yes and T6 - Yes... aswell?
nvm... read Gorngonzolla post from yesterday
Looks like that only Tier 5 Fleet level like ships will get 11 Consoles
so the c-store ship I bought and then bought a fleet module to upgrade it, now needs ANOTHER upgrade except this time its not even on par with the other t6 ships?.... ya no thats not happening
I have TONS of ships, for fed, rom, klink, I got like 10 characters spread between the factions many with lock box ships on them or with multiple fleet ships
ok, and they what? want me to pay them AGAIN to fly these ships?
whats with all the tax fellas? tax just to play the game
and now even if I upgrade them, the stupid ships wont even be top of the line again? whats with that? what fool over there thinks except for the first rush on release day- that anyone a year from now will even bother with getting a t5 ship, fleeting it, then up gradeing it... to fly it period
ya ya, some of the consoles for the t5 ships are nice from the c-store, but common- most folks dont even fly with them, defiants cloak? mvam console? gas for the assault cruiser console? comon, most of these ships we just wont even see anymore period in pvp- unless... cryptic plans on doing an EVEN MORE obvious money grab and re-release t6 versions of all the t5 ships- god would that suck
"here, re-buy all the ships you bought from us and got fleet versions of, honestly, its worth it"
they have already made running multiple characters for pvp a MASSIVE grind, and very costly, and now with this- get folks to retreat back even further to just running 1 toon
so what does that mean for pvp
1) folks are going to STOP buying multiple ships period- (cause they will get what ever ships that would be good for their main character and thats it) so in the long run = less money for cryptic
2) folks are going to pvp LESS- thats right, going to pvp less, you would think being free of all the wasted time grinding up multiiple characters would equal more pvp time, it will for a short while, then folks are going to get restless, they are going to crash up agaisnt the rock, paper, scissor of the game with their ONE build and will find some compositions of teams they just cant beat unless manned by noobs, and this will bug them, they will vent, but in the end it means less pvp time as they start to step away from the game = less money for cryptic
look, I dont know what cryptics master plan with all this is, I hope its better then just offering us better ships for cash and thats it, cause man, we all bought our tickets to ride this thing already, and to be faced with all those ships you already bought being obsolete and the STAGERING cost to upgrade all the ships to what? NOT EVEN t6 level is b.s.
it strikes me as they are trying to reset the game, the high end game, they want every man women and child to have to rebuy EVERYTHING they already paid for, ya- LOL that will be the day,
if this goes live and its going to, Im infact going down (like many have already stated) to just keeping 1 toon pvp rdy,
Ill get my free lock box ship up grade, to whatever, silly t5.5 level LOL and fly in the game as is,
then probably do the same already stated in above, buy JUST ONE t6 ship, and fly that,
and when I get bored of pvp in my one ship, Ill leave the game- cause the grind and money that cryptic calls "FUN!" is not fun, it sucks, and feels like punishment
This sums up my feelings and plans I have 3 tacs that I would call bleeding edge and one sci that is close. I will keep the tacs up because I have free upgrade ships on them and TRIBBLE everything else.

I don't understand how people get these numbers. It seems most ships listed on the "available for upgrade" are 10 console ships.
But if you look at the matrix this is what I think it means:
This assumes 10 console ships as the baseline. In that case, anything less than T6 will be at a massive disadvantage (in terms of PvP).
I could be wrong and would appreciate being pointed to where they resolve this question. I think we really need to see a T6 ship at this point, with a price as well.

Look at the last post on page 4 of this thread. The quoted post.
Seems the system is pretty messy. At the end, you get Retrofit Upgrades, Fleet Retrofit Upgrades and actual Tier 6 ships.
This would have been the perfect time to finally streamline endgame ships, and they make it more complicated (and I don't want to read about the tears of players that upgraded their C-Store Retrofit only to realize they have to rebuy that upgrade for their Fleet ship).
I also have doubts that the upgrades will be balanced against actual Tier 6 ships, since the actual Tier 6 ships will have an extra BO Slot. Even if that is just an Ensign, it seems worth more than a console. (Even if you consider console powers.)
And of course, the new BOFF type could end up being problematic, depending on the power levels of the BOFF powers it gives access to you. And not having a ship with these powers could be a real drawback.
Of course, even among Fleet and lockbox ships, power levels tend to vary considerably. But starting with a weak foundation doesn't make it more likely to improve.
I have no problem with the cost associated with upgrading. I mean, it's not like I want to throw away money, but I can see why it's not free. It's basically how they pay off the expansion (similar to how the Legacy Pack paid of LOR - you wanted those new Romulan ships!)...
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
I think it's the boff thing that will make or break it. We will see how that turns out. Considering that to me it sounds as if it is one additional ability rather than a full boff seat, the abilities need to be quite powerful and whenever Cryptic tries to make something cool and powerful, it usually backfires horribly.
Unless they are terribad and no one uses them, the BOFFs will also certainly change the metagame. But this might be independent from the upgrade mechanics. (Well, it could end up being Tier 6 or get out... But this would also affect the alleged Tier 6 ships that won't have the new BOFF type.)
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
I hope the 1+ Console Slot is Universal for ''Fleet Level'' T5-U ships, since i don't trust them to fixed many ships consoles slots especially my fav ship the B'rel which i expect Geko to give it a 5th Eng Console... if it means to give the a FaW Scimitar spammer a potential 6th Tac Console to work with... i'll be fine with that.
Okay, thanks. I didn't see the post on page 4 either.
Regardless, I still don't see the point of upgrading any T5 ship since T6 fleet ships will be out soon enough.
That's because you don't love your ships like we do ours. You treat them like a tool, not like a good and trusted steed that went with you through good and bad times and alway stuck to you.
Heartless.

How ever there is the fact that the T5U ship can't get the extra Boff powers or other bells and whistles those ships have..
But HEY! Who cares about PVP Any way?! Not a single iota of thought for this went into PVP. All that matters is the all mighty Dol- Ahem.. PVE.

I could be wrong and would appreciate being pointed to where they resolve this question. I think we really need to see a T6 ship at this point, with a price as well.
Look at the last post on page 4 of this thread. The quoted post.
Unless they are terribad and no one uses them, the BOFFs will also certainly change the metagame. But this might be independent from the upgrade mechanics. (Well, it could end up being Tier 6 or get out... But this would also affect the alleged Tier 6 ships that won't have the new BOFF type.)
Heartless.
