With all the qq going on, I thought I'd get a productive thread going. Want to canvass opinions on the following potential tournament rules. Call it an experiment if you want to see what's more important. Balance, fun, or a bit of both?
What would you say to the following rules?
Only consoles allowed are the ones that came with the ship
All traits, DOFFs, Rep traits allowed
All weapons allowed
All starbase equipment allowed
All Ship sets allowed
No more than 2 of the same class of captain / ship allowed
No more than 1 Romulan allowed per team
No more than 2 members of the same fleet allowed in the same team (includes sister / affiliated fleets)
No lockbox ships
No lobi store items
We all cry for balance / more fun fights. Let's use this as a 1st test of potential many to give live examples of how to breathe new life into PvP
should probably make this vanilla traits only, since there are soo many OP lockbox traits (inspirational) plus people are buying their way to R&D traits
No more than 2 members of the same fleet allowed in the same team (includes sister / affiliated fleets)
I dont think that matters so much, probably too much of a threshold considering you will need teamspeak
Might be nice to use the leaderboard to mix teams from a list

I dont think "we all" cry for it at all, I think most people use whatever tools the devs give them

Or even let people sign up individually with the possible captains/ships they can bring.
Then on the day of the tourney, make the teams by lottery, and give each team a certain amount of time (15 min to 30mins) to work out a team build/strategy...

Pretty much like the Lethal Lottery that I used to host.
We've been bouncing the idea of a vanilla trait Mirror-ship tournament around in TS. Something like that could be fun, whether with fleet teams allowed or mixed up TD style.
Figure it will be all Vesta and Novas spamming particle damage and KDF has nothing to compare when lockbox ships banned.
indeed 1st one that crossed my mind has been dyson-tac one. the ship set is pretty nice . ur right though. as for me, i always think tac-side with a touch of tanking . more than enough good choices there for kdf imo.
also shouldn't be that much of a prob as teams would be mixed. only ones left behind are players with kdf-sci-toons only, or am i wrong?

The KDF DSD is actually nice for a TBR/GW build. One doesn't have to use the mode switching, but if you do you almost get a Dhelan. It's not always raining in Qo'noS
Besides the Nebula would be way better than a Vesta and Nova with it's higher hull points if people are going to be running around with TBR.

But Vesta has a hangar bay. That's a huge asset. Turns way faster than a Nebula, more flexible bridge officer layout, 5 sci consoles on the Surveillance.
Full set is some awesome sauce.
And KDF has some neat science vessels as well, like the Kar'Fi, Dyson Destroyers etc.

Yep and I have both. I love the vesta, it's amazing, but the Nebula was seriously built for PvP with it's consoles and hull hp. It also has a boff layout that can't be emulated by the vesta. If everyone's going to be running around with buffed up TBR the Vesta has a cool console every 3 mins, but the Nebula can pack on the neutroniums or kinetic DR consoles so TBR isn't much of a problem. They're totally different styles of play. In my opinion, however, in this tournament, I think the fleet nebula would be a bit more reliable.

I still think Vesta cuts it. If you think 2 engi consoles aren't enough, go for the Strategic. The Vesta can emulate the Nebula boffs, but the Nebula can't emulate the Vesta. A free Uber-RSP, a Shield that waves goodbye to rams and torpedo bombers, a PBAoE massive hull and shield heals, a Phaser beam that buffed properly shreds trough a properly incapacitated target. Plus the Nebula console can go on a Vesta... but again not the opposite...
Oh and Auxiliary Phaser DHC! That negates the need of caring about weapon power. Nebula is a fine ship, but IMO won't beat the Vesta. 4 engineering consoles... yah... I never met a guy who would like to use 4 engineering consoles on a science vessel

I'm not going to make this a nebula vs vesta thread but the vesta and nebula have only 1 overlapping layout the other one is the same as the d'kyr and the third is unique to the nebula. The t3 nebula console is universal but the t5 one is bound the nebula. That's why the nebula makes one of the better snoopers. It's just different play styles.
Back on topic, I think this tournament will be great to watch. Hope lots of people join. It would be fun to see a TD version (I might even join then if time zones work out).
We should really aim to do this right before the season 10 launch as a sort of going away present to the current game. There's (possibly) going to be a lot of ships fielded that we don't normally get to play with or see on the field, I for one will be in an aquarius obviously.
I know I do t space PvP much, but how about some of the same rules, plus lottery teams. Have an outside player that has no affiliation get a list of players and make teams. Let dice fall how they fall. It should. It be that hard to find a player that understands the bickering in space PvP and separate the teams. Put all players name in three hats divided into their carreers. So you pick one Eng, one Sci, and one Tac per team. The other two will be randomly drawn from the three hats not to put more than two of each career in a team. I can only see one thing bad and there might not be enough eng to make teams. If that is true other rules might have to adapt.
who wants to go to all the gateways and look at everyone while they fight?!
I think he was talking about player buff bars in game. You can clearly see inspired leader, all the new ones, I think some of the crafting ones have a buff as well. The ones that effect the fleet skills has a buff that shows as well. I strikes would be clearly obvious.
About the only ones I can think of that wouldn't be obvious would be helmsman, percise and hot pursuit.
The no more than 2 from 1 fleet doesn't make sense to me.
People can simply leave fleet during the tournament.
If its going to be random then it should be random teaming using the Hilbert balancing tool.
Using your rules but Tyler Durden style
Well obviously simply leaving or changing fleets would not be tolerated. The bigger problem would be deciding what constitutes sister/affiliate fleets. Or where to draw the line when deciding which group you fall into.
Myself as an example. I would consider myself as a HoBO but I also have a fed toon in Lag. I never play that toon or with the group so would I be excluded from a team that already has two Lag players or players from a fleet that may be affiliated with Lag? Just a thought.

Thought of that and edited that rule out...
so ask to restrict it to Fleet ships
Nova has hp of a B'rel... it breaks when you step on it
battlecruisers with BOP support are perfectly viable against cruisers and defiants

It would be something to bring the community together instead of the current petty rivalries causing endless arguments.
I kinda like the idea Zan floated about mirror/9 console ships too. Any excuse to use my Mirror Negh.
