After one of the last patches i start to have lags again, small ones at first, manageable ones ... then they got worse ... now ... well ... i beg the game to let me enter.
Takes several minutes or even half an hour to be able to log in, only to be kicked back out when selecting a toon .
If i am really lucky he will let me enter , select a toon and play a little BUT with lags, rubberbanding, and freezes. Nothing changed to my PC or internet.
I keep hearing people complaining about this.... many people ...
Can we please fix this ? Please ... with sugar on top :P
If its like this now i don't wanna imagine how it will be when new season will start.
....and for pete's sake, don't game on a wireless connection.
Oh yea... Seriously? Playing on wireless... only good if you're sitting at the optimal distance from your wireless accesspoint with sufficient speed, and not interfering devices around you.
In the average house: no such thing.
Also, who is Pete?
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...

Pete's sake - polite version of "For God's sake!"
also, wifi plugins can fail. Mine is starting to fail.
and yes, the graphic errors can actually trigger a lagfest.

i run three different connection types if and when needed or when the various ones fail. there is the standard wired connection which has been usually unreliable for me ever since i started gaming with st armada demo back in 01' and back then i was using a 56k modem (still remember the dial up noises) and then dsl. i got a wired connection from pc to a socket connector that runs around the house connection for the other socket connector and then uses the house electrics as an extended network connector if wired fails for whatever reason, i also have a bit of hardware that connects as wireless to the main hub.
lemme tell you that for me there is very little difference between wired and wireless connection and ive gamed with it when the other two options are not open for use. ive had no issues or slow down and im around 10m from the hub and my room with the ordinary house walls, metal pipes, celing and wooden floor boards, no drop off at all and im in an average run of the mill house.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
lag is either from internet issues or a weak pc. The game's graphics are extremely inefficient, but a gaming system can still handle it. There is zero lag over a good connection -- there is nothing to "fix" on their end.
I had started experiencing lag out of the blue and I traced my ping to cryptic...
As it turned out I was getting between 25%-100% packet loss on Cogentco hops... this is where COMCAST sends me....
I researched an I found out Comcast is having a legal battle with this Cogentco and bottlenecks are being created there for Comcast customers... I don't give a TRIBBLE whose fault it is I just want them to fix it
Maybe do a ping trace and see if you are being bottlenecked....

Ofcourse you can run the game on wireless connection, or wired, just ping router gateway (all your gateways if you have more than one), timeless command and see what happens. Anything over 5-6 ms on wireless and over 2 ms on cable is not good.
After that try tracert and see how many hops do you need to game servers.
Next problem could be your ISP or route from you - ISP, or ISP and beyond. Most ISP will have different route from them to parent ISP and beyond.
And like noroblad said, check your PC, i also had a problem with my laptop until i disassembled it and cleaned the cooling systems and re installed my OS, now no more problems
Hello all! I am first time poster. I noticed since yesterday that the game has suddenly become more difficult. I have a fun build with 13k that should do stf in an ease Maxed out Rep and proper Fleet and Rep gear. But since yesterday the Borgs where literally chasing me around one shoot killing me constantly. I was on the same day on a Crystalline entity with 3 guys that maxed out Reps and all had to drop from the stf because Crystalline entity one shoot kills everyone.
Is it something on my Character or is it Lag the OP is speaking of?

While unrelated to the thread, the entity builds up damage unless you debuff it with tachyon beam or energy syphon or one of the several other powers that it does. The more it builds up the more damage it does.

While unrelated to the thread, the question is: Do you play elites? If so, do you remember to fix your death-penalties?
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
In this case, I find myself in the same spot of the OP.
Since last patch I find extremely difficult to even login; I understand I have a crappy connection but this doesn't seems to be related.
I usually play smoothly, to this and other online games: now it seems to take ages to even load the login screen in the launcher.

Chances are you (and the OP) are getting caught at a bad junction somewhere. Thats where re-route comes in.
First, try to chose a different proxy... if that dosen't work... come back.

The phrase "for Pete's sake" has two explanations, on is as said above it's meant to be St Peter and a less blasphemous form of "for gods sake" another theory stems from the phrase "for pity's sake" which has been satirized into Pete over the years.
Did you know there is actually a world wide "for Pete's sake" day? It's held on 26th of February every year.
Thanks for replying. I relate the mess on pugs yesterday to lag that is mine and lag from others. So not at all of off topic Sir. I also asked if for the individual player the game can become more difficult suddenly or that has to be attributed to lag.
Yes I know to heal my self in combat but so many dropped out of the Stf that we where overwhelmed.

I did not know that no...
All religion is to me, is helpful reading when I can't sleep... Knocks me out in minutes...
Thank you for interesting read.

Rubberbanding is a good indication your issue with connection related. Rubberbanding comes due to connectivity issued somewhere between your client and the servers. There's a high likelihood that whatever is causing it, isn't actually on the server-side of things, but somewhere along your route to the servers.

To dilute all the flood in this thread - getting back to topic.
Seems like infamous Cogent Communications is having "issues" with STO again
Stable packet losses at te4-4.ccr01.bos06.atlas.cogentco.com
More rare - at te0-0-0-8.rcr21.ams05.atlas.cogentco.com or be2038.ccr41.ams03.atlas.cogentco.com

Cogentco is having bandwidth issues with just about everyone. They are (and have been) notorious for peering-abuse over quite some time, and it is creating routing problems due to flooded connections.
So since this thread has more off topic conversation than actual topic conversation I'm going to close this thread.
Also, this type of thread belongs in the windows & networking forum.

Obviously I am talking to the OP.
^^ This.
There's graphics lag, though (CCE, anyone?), from the game engine, that may need some looking into.

What if Pete is an atheist... Would'n that be very impolite towards him then?
I'm pretty sure Pete refers to Saint Peter, who is probably not an atheist.

EDIT:
Yes Good old days, US Robotics 56k, 20 minutes for one MP3 song at 128 kbps, then i had 128k ISDN
I remember the noise and 300$ bills...
