I just levelled an Engi character to level 50. R&D was absolutely useless. I did science doff missions to get materials still had no chance of getting the level appropriate item.
And that's not the only thing wrong with R&D You put in a nice effort, really, but its more a pain than gain sad. When it was announced i was looking forward to it, but now it's just sad Before i had R&D maxed out with all chars because when i levelled them, i could us the gear i created. Now: NOT AT ALL.

Well yeah. You can level a character to 50 inside of a day if your put your mind to it. But (assuming you don't stoop to Cryptic's level and buy your way to victory) it'll take you eleven months to hit level 15 in any school.
You're just a machine. And machines can be broken.

Silly Rabbit! Crafting was not designed to help you. .. or be fun it seems. It was designed to help Cryptic. After playing with it, the only used for it seems to be to drain dilithium out of the system form those who have an super abundance of it.
"Star Trek Online is powered by the most abundant resource in the galaxy . . . Gullibility"
This is why crafting is such a fail. It doesn't keep pace with the character's level OR reputation status. When there's gear involved you'd think there would also be some measure of common sense.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
NO game has crafting that keeps up with player level, that I have ever seen. Maybe an oddball... but take the big stuff... wow? Nope, you hit max level and crafting is at most 2/3 of the way to max, probably far less than that. Lotro? Crafting will be more than 10 levels below your char. Your expectations of being able to roll a new char & craft items for it are somewhat misplaced. I say somewhat because you can make mark X gear at crafting level 1. Odds are it will be white quality, but you can make it.
Here is the sweet spot, though:
the crafted gear is mostly account bind. Make it once, and all your future alts can re-use that mark IV purple overload beam or whatever....

You know I really wonder how people get to these numbers. Level 15 is something around 630k experience. You get 6k a day just by running the daily project. So if you do the math you'll find yourself at a bit more than three month per school. Do different schools on different toons and you'll have the entire thing max'd in less than 4 month.

I'm probably running on old information. As in, post-OMGWTF information. That and I care so little about math that I couldn't be bothered to work out the specifics myself.
But seriously, even four months is a joke.

Actually, it's a bit more than 3 months for level 15. I'ts the level 20 grind that takes 334 days to complete.
Note: It's actually less because at some point past level 15, you get 100% chance to crit and get 7,000 XP instead of 6,000 XP every 20 hours. So maybe it can be closer to 300-320 days with random crits.

Actually, it used to take less time. During testing, the daily project used to give 9000 exp instead of 6000, and we all know about how you used to be able to slot the daily project multiple times for one school.
its useful to have so you can craft low level weapons for Alt's of types you wont normally see. right now im running a new fed tac with polaron weaponry.
NO game has crafting that keeps up with player level, that I have ever seen.
That is true. And some of it is on the player, and whether they want to slow down to craft or rush to max level right away.
This game...well, we level SO fast it isn't even worth crafting until we're at max level. And even then, the first 14 levels literally are nothing but research and useless TRIBBLE. You have to wonder about it.

11 months for level 20. since you can get some criticals + maybe craftig weekends its about 10 months.
but yes some more things for low levels were already suggested.
That's probably due in part to the fact that they're also practically useless.
As equipment, maybe, but they accelerate your experience gain if you play around an hour each day. Run a Mk VI project (which only requires components made from Common and Uncommon materials, of which you can easily accrue hundreds) when you start your session, then an hour later claim the trash and the XP. Actually crafting things gives you about twice the experience per hour than the Research project, and you can craft the same thing in all your project slots.

useless is in the eye of the beholder I guess. At the lower levels, purple items are sparse. Its pretty easy to crit out a full set of IV gear all purple now --- and again, most of it is only account bound. True, you don't *need* it at that level, but its not useless either. It is the best you can get at the level apart from featured event downlevel play rewards (example, solanae set from doing the big orange mission over and over when it was featured, at say level 10 or 20). Best you can get is the opposite of useless.

It's sooner than that... i was one of those that bought my way to lvl 15 beams. I was getting 10K during the R&D weekend (6K + 3K R&D weekend bonus + 1K Crit) every time way before level 15. I did it with just under a million dilithium.

Your wrong.
WoW I had several crafters. Each one had their level with crafting. As I was using the crafted items for gear. My blacksmith was up to level. You just had to work it up as you leveled. It can be done. I had a leatherworker. Same thing, I had no problems keeping his crafting up with level. My tailor, thanks to my other characters leveling up. They was crafting stuff so far beyond their level. I had to actually level to craft more higher level stuff. And to actually use those items.
So yes, WoW you can craft to match your level. If you couldn't do it. Then you wasn't doing it correctly.

It's definetly not useless ... It's totally changed the Exchange, where even a lowly Lt or LtCmdr can have Purple Very Rare gear for very little outlay.
You can equip an Escort with an all Purple Anti-proton build (weapons and consoles) for less than 50K EC ...
Where it still s***s is at endgame level, where idiots are still asking 200+Million EC for an Omni Directional Beam or such ... It's totally pointless because if you run one on a cruiser, you can Broadside and fire all your beams anyway, so what's the point?
What I'm waiting for is the boot to drop, and players realize that this stuff, though useful, is not "must have" gear at endgame, then we should see a similar pattern as we currently have at low levels ...
If Cryptic really wanted to make things easier, and more desirable at low levels, they would have selectable parameters or [mods] for weapons at lower levels, either that or restrict the MK number to your character level, but have a greater chance to roll a Purple at that level ...
I been using the crafting as well. What I do know you can make some blue or purple items at lower levels. Where before you would never had much access too. I made 2 phaser banks for my new Sci character so that should pack a wallop. I have thought of making more stuff for them later on. Or just keep doing the regular 20 hour, and save up my mats for higher level stuff.

Yup, same opinion as others. You can craft purple low level gear for your alts and breeze through levels easily with OP gear compared to the weak NPCs you'll encounter.
Frankly, at this point I could probably level up my abandoned toons quickly.

im running ap on mine, ship, toon and boffs. significantly more powerful then others in the same weight league. so 5 levels at the end takes a life time? and when you get there i bet, the game is close to shutting down. yeah.. no, im not gonna go beyond level 15 if i get there. one of my r&d classes is level 8 as it is, could of been a little higher, but not by much. not paying a dime into that 20h research daily and i have missed maybe 2 days since it came out.

I got to level 15 in Projectiles by spending about 400,000 Dilithium I'd had saved up. I ended up crafting about 1,500 IFF Beacons, 1,000 Electromagnetic Couplings and 500 Industrial Supplies; and then running 500-ish Mk VI Torpedo projects.
After I've made Particle Emission Torpedos for everyone in my fleet who gives me the materials for one, I'm just going to be churning out green quality components. There's a gap in the market for people who can mass produce low level components, and at level 15 you have quite a high crit chance.
im just casually going at it at the pace there is, besides i never have the resources to sustain what i want anyway. grinding has never been a strong point ,but luckily this grind is only a few minute log on, select the botton option and just wait 20 hours and do other things, rinse repeat.
my newest toon is consistently running first on sb24 and gorn minefield with the ap load out, with the miranda, far ahead of the rest, now the retro connie at t2 and its still just as good. i havent been able to pursue getting to t3 stuff yet, doing house painting and redecorating. this laptop isnt designed for long term struggling like crazy in the tiny space the mobo, cpu and graphics card is in.
eventually i wanna get to the point of crafting my own tr11 whatever sniper rifle, hopefully a lucky ultra rare critx x2 and shpen x4 :P

Cryptic is forgetting the number 1 rule to a game; It's supposed to be fun, not frustrating. I too was looking forward to the crafting revamp. It's all just a waste of time. For new players, you're much better off getting equipment from the missions and waiting till 50 and joining a fleet.

im running this test specifically to see what the difference is and it huge. however the amount of titanium for the low end stuff is rather extensively used.
