I had one of these moments earlier today, I had saved 781 Lobi (with the intent of getting the Jem Dread carrier). So the last Dominion lockbox (was hoping for Dil mining claims) I open had 20 Lobi and the Jem Heavy Escort Carrier. I have both now. All the keys I had been using were bought with Dil-Zen trades or off the exchange.
As a sharp contrast, the last keys I bought with real money about 18 months ago (100 of them, and opened 100 boxes), I didn't get one ship (not even a mirror ship).
So, yes. I believe the game is mocking me.
Time is a funny thing; There is always too much of it. Except when you need it the most, then there is never enough.
It's less the game that's mocking you (all of us) as it's more cryptics fault for setting the chances for actally getting one of the lockbox ships ridiculously low.
Just roll with it and be happy that you got one of the best carriers in the game. Use it and have fun or sell it and get rich, your chioce.
I decided I wanted a Galor, but didn't have quite enough (200+ million on the exchange) to buy one, so I thought I'd take a chance and get 100 million ec worth of keys and just open cardie boxes. No ship, I was rather disappointed. Decided to sell all the other stuff that had come out of the boxes, made about 18 million, got a few more keys with it and low and behold I got a Galor.
I opened tons of Undine boxes, no ship. And then for the past month or so I've been opening dozens and dozens of Ferengi boxes hoping to get a D'Kora. Nothing. Then during the promotions I opened about six Tal'Shiar boxes and got a battlecruiser. Then I bought just 3 of the survivor doff packs and got a Bulwark.
People complaining about not getting anything out of the lockboxes are really no different from the people buying lottery tickets at the convenience store and then getting irritated they didn't win anything.
I had been saving 3 temporal lockboxes for some time. I grabbed 3 keys with ec & dil one night to give it a try. Picked up a Wells science ship, which I sold in fairly short order. To be fair, I had opened at least 40 boxes using zen purchased with real money, but there's no need these days for my gaming needs. It's really not worth it, but you can get lucky.
I am genuinely curious because there is one thing I don't understand:
You buy lockbox keys for money and open boxes because you want a dilithium mining claim. Instead of buying zen and converting that to dilithium right away. What did I miss?

You'd be wrong about that. Did you open all one type of box, or a variety?
250+undine.
I just needed the lobi for various consoles and new undine gear, wasnt really going for the ship, i end up buying nicor from exchange last week.
Was kind of frustrating from not getting one after all those boxes

A Dil mining claim is worth more than the Dil lost getting the key which unlocked it.
If you get a Dil Mining claim.

Between Tribble box opening and people tracking their box rewards we have a very good estimation and a large enough sample size that it is representative.
If someone is about to spend X hundreds of Dollars to get a ship by opening boxes, it is not unreasonable to ask them to look up the odds first. They should anyway, you could buy a real world car or motorcycle for that...
It isn't bad compared to a lottery, lottery odds makes lockbox odds look like every box gives a grand prize ship and 50 Lobi.

So, you're the other one. You know you're not alone, right? The LockBoxes mock everyone except those who don't really care one way or another.
One of my Fleet mates had been saving Dominion LockBoxes until he could purchase some keys. He purchases the keys and opens the first box. JHAS. He opens the second box. JHDC. He opens the third. A second JHAS.
I spend US $20.00 on a prepaid once or twice a month. Usually buy about four or five keys with the Zen. Open thirty boxes and the best I get are endless copies of Duty Officer Packs.

i call BS right here.
1. the JHAS was never IN the dominion lockbox, it's only been in the doff packs or the winter package it debuted in.
2. JHDC is a lobi store item, not drop in a lockbox.
Okay, so I got the box wrong. This event occurred nearly two years ago. It may very well have been two JHECs. Unlike a lot of people around here, I'm not all knowing about what ships are where.
The point is whenever the OP opens a LockBox, he has no luck getting the good stuff. Neither do I.
You'd think after this long, I'd be a little more aware of where the neckbeards are and what they wait to passively aggressively auto correct someone in public on.

Folks in my fleet's TS channel have been making Lockboxes Anonymous jokes about this kind of thing.

Grand prize ship odds are around 0.5%. To get the ship is like rolling a 250+ sided dice and hoping it lands on 1.
Maybe it saw your name and couldn't resist. "I've made lots of people ragequit...but to make someone have a stroke, now that will take some doing."

Conclusion: it really is random.
I am seriously starting to believe that exchange keys wont get you the ship

I mean a week or so back I had some spare ZEN after doing some dil grinding and spent is on a couple lockbox keys.
One undine lockbox had a fluidic kit item and lobi. The second had an Undine Nicor (I think that's the name of it) ship and some lobi.
Needless to say I was stunned and happy.
