How much Money do you spend on STO?

hyefatherhyefather Member Posts: 1,286 Arc User
I just added up what I spent on STO this month. I got a little here and a little there but in the end it adds up. I've noticed I spend around 20 dollors every 2 weeks. Thats 40 dollors a month (way more than a 15 dollor sub). Thats not counting the Lifetime, Legacy pack, 3 piece ship sets and numerous services. My hats off to cryptic for making revenue for the game. I just wonder how many other ppl spend what I spend. I know the question is kinda taboo (like asking a women how much she weighs).
I have to wonder tho if I didn't spend any money on the game would I still feel the same level of comentment. Am I only sticking around because I have money invested. Would I have the same level of Fun if I hadn't spend anything. Would I be haveing more fun if I grinded out every piece of dil to buy stiff. I don't know. If the gameing community would be so kind as to answer a few questions I would greatly appreciate the Feedback.

1. How much money do you spend on sto on a normal basis or total.
2. People who have spent alot of money on sto are you still enjoying the game.
3. People who haven't spent any money on STO , do you enjoy the game.
4. Do you feel you have to spend money to enjoy sto.
5. Do you, IYO beleive F2P is better than a sub. I know this is a big discussion all to itself. Just for this thread a simple yes or no will suffice.

    1. I'd guess that I've spent about ~$350 on STO, including a Lifetime purchase for $200.
    2. For the most part.
    4. For me, not really, even before the Lifetime purchase.
    5. If done right, yes.

Total, I think I'm at about $250 since starting during the 2nd Anniversary event. All spending has ceased as of the 4th Grindaversary event.
    2. People who have spent alot of money on sto are you still enjoying the game.

N/A, don't see that money over that timespan as "a lot." Still more or less enjoying the game, most of the time.
    3. People who haven't spent any money on STO , do you enjoy the game.

    N/A
    4. Do you feel you have to spend money to enjoy sto.

Nope. And that's not even a "feel," that's a fact. Grinding dilithium, purchasing Zen on the Dil Exchange, damn near anything (outside of a couple of fluffy LTS perks) in the game can be gained without spending any real money- so not having to spend money to enjoy is an indisputable fact.

Whether one has the patience to get things the no-money route might be something else- but the fact of cash not being required still remains.

    Sub = STO:RIP, 2011.

F2P = You and I even had an STO to sign up for.

    You do the math.

We spent $300 for a lifetime and that is it.

I feel you do not need money to enjoy STO.
It is better than any other F2P game IMO.
I still and have always enjoyed it.

    1. How much money do you spend on sto on a normal basis or total.
    Since LoR, 0, nothing, nada.

    2. People who have spent alot of money on sto are you still enjoying the game.
I've spent quite a lot (more than I should I guess). LTS, LoR legacy pack (supporting the Romulan since that what I waited for years), and a few ships (2-3).
I still enjoy the game, mostly. Sometimes I complain because they do something I dislike, or something really greedy, but I still play. That's not because one thing (or two) is bad than everything is.

    4. Do you feel you have to spend money to enjoy sto.
No. Most of my purchase where to support the game. First it was because I played for free up to lvl50 (and even had a silver account thanks to an alienware free 10 gold days offer), and I felt guilty. So I bought a ship. Then I bought the legacy pack to support the Romulan, but it was not needed per say. And finally I bought the LTS for all the advantages and whatnot.
In the end, I could have played the game for free and still enjoy it.

    5. Do you, IYO beleive F2P is better than a sub. I know this is a big discussion all to itself. Just for this thread a simple yes or no will suffice.
    I wouldn't play with a sub. I didn't when this game was not f2p. I wouldn't even have tried with a sub.
I'm not anti sub per say, I played a lot of sub based game, and I'll do it again, if I find an interesting game. However, I don't think STO deserve a sub. Maybe if we had all the goodies in the cash shop for free, but knowing cryptic and pwe, it's not going to happen.
It was longer than yes or no, but you I can't give an accurate opinion in a single word on this matter.
So yes, technically with a LTS I would have a sub, but I wouldn't have tried this game with a sub, and thus, never bought the LTS.

    1) $10 since January 2012.
    2) n/a
    3) n/a
    4) No.
    5) For players? No. For companies? Yes.

edit: Should note, mind you - I've spent over 15000 ZEN on ships alone - not counting ZEN that's been spent on costumes, respecs, BOFF slots, character slots, etc, etc, etc. Couldn't even guess the total there. It's simply a case that's been through Dil -> ZEN transactions. I grind Dil, a product that Cryptic sells indirectly by allowing the Dil <-> ZEN transactions to take place.

    edit2: Heck, I've got 2500 ZEN sitting there waiting on a C-Store T5 Raptor...

    1) $320 altogether since I started playing in August. I came to realize I was quite greedy on some months.
    2) I'm enjoying it, but not because of money. I'm enjoying it because it's fun
    3) N/A
    4) No, not really. It helps, but it's not required at all.
    5) Yes, I do. I see it with my brother - he plays WoW and not only does he have to fork out money for subscriptions, he's in the mindset that he absolutely positively needs X and has to buy it, so that's a lot more money. But, that's just me.

Honestly, I think this entire conversation is showing a few things

    1) Money doesn't buy happiness.
    2) Saying "I won't spend a dime because X" is stupid.
    3) This entire conversation is stupid.

$200 on an LTS when it was on sale, probably a bit more than that in bits and pieces over time.

As others have said, no money to Cryptic since the misbegotten grindaversary.

    Is it worth it?

I've felt like i got a good deal on the LTS, and I dont begrudge anything I've spent on the game.

I'd like to spend more, but recent decisions have made that extremely difficult for me.

    Is it necessary?

Nope, all the cash stuff was nice but not necessary.

It's entirely possible to grind dil for zen to buy the few bits and pieces (account bank, EC limit) necessary to get the best from the game.

When I started as a F2per back when season 5 launched, I was buying 25, to 50 dollars in PWE cards at Gamestop almost every week on payday. I started collecting ships, and uniform packs. Unlocking paid services, and such.
For my birthday last year, my family bought me the LTS, and I haven't spent a dime on the game after that. I guess I just budget my stipend on stuff. Other than picking up the Mogh, theres nothing currently in the C-store I have an interest in.

    1) Less than $20 per month usually. About half the months it is $0. Typically I will buy something that I just dont want to grind for, and I treat it as substitute for the monthly sub. Once I hit $20 I will usually stop and put off any additional purchases until the next month, although I have spent more in a couple of special circumstances.

    2) N/A

    3) I enjoy it well enough the months that I spend nothing.

    4) No, but it helps, especially the early game is hard to get by without spending $$ than the late game, in that you need shared bank access, more inventory space, respec tokens, all that stuff, and you need it all at once so there is a lot of pressue to spend money early just to get past the freewall. To me STO is more of an extended evaluation than anything.

    5) I did not play when it was sub-based, so in that regard F2P lets Cryptic get more money from me that I did not give them otherwise, and I suppose that's "better" for them. I think its generally worse for gameplay though, because Cryptic is always releasing OP TRIBBLE to get more $$ from people.

    - Depends on the likes of the people

    3. People who haven't spent any money on STO , do you enjoy the game.
    - Oh.. are you kidding??? I can just easily get Dilithium and trade it fro ZEN and walla you don't have to spend a dime and you still enjoy the game... so yes...

    4. Do you feel you have to spend money to enjoy sto.
    - No.... Unless I buy a LTS...

since launch it was LTS but I still spent some money now and again on ships etc. with the dilithium exchange introducion I spend even less real money. but I did splash out around this time last year on the LOR pack. since that purchase I've not spent any real money on sto. season 8 caused me to play less and season 9 is on the same par almost.

if a cardassian fRaction was added to the game with a ship pack bundle I would snap that up. but I can't really see what I could spend money on in sto in the future.

    3. Yep, totally. Bought a lot of ships including Scimitars, Mobius, MVAE, Defiant, Avenger, Patrol Refit, Excelsior, T'varo and others. Completely enjoyable and the best F2P model I've seen so far!
    4. No I don't.
    5. Yes I do, to me F2P is better than subscribing.

    2 NA
3 Eh. Been here for over two years and it has good things and bad things. Some parts I dig, other parts I'd never put up with if I had to pay a fee for it, but at the price point, I'll suffer through the various MMORPG conventions
4 Absolutely not. You can do anything in this game with just the freebie and mission-reward stuff. The C-store stuff is just a little more, a little shinier, but absolutely is not necessary.
5 Yes. I'd certainly never pay for crowds, grind, or timesinks.

3 copies of the game when it was brand new: $80, $50, $50
    Lifetime Subscription Pre-Order: $240
    Legacy of Romulus Pre-Order: $199
    Lots of C-Store purchases: unknown

    Total: Probably $2000-$3000.

    in total?

pre-f2p subs around 3 or 4 months worth so that was around, 9 pounds x 4 months = 36 pounds there, occasionally threw in some z/c points around 10 pounds there, LTS around 150 pounds and lor starter pack around 15 pounds... call it around 200-250 pounds total by guess because i dont keep records of this stuff and with the lts last year, i have no need to put any money into it at all any more.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

    1. Me i have spent faaaaar too much money on this game, most likely over $2000 by now. . .
Damn you cryptic for releasing so many cool ships that i just have to collect <.<

    2. I'm still enjoying the game somewhat, the endgame stuff is a bit easy at this point but as usual the important part is the people you meet.

    3. N/A

    4. Of course its possible to enjoy the game without spending anything at all even if spending helps a lot.

    5. I'm not a big fan of F2P myself as it often leads to buggy games etc due to player retention not being as important for the developers. The most important thing in the F2P games is the store items as that is where the game makes its money.
This of course leads to the whole thing we are seeing here in STO, bugs have a low priority as has new missions etc. while the store/lockboxes get new stuff a lot.
Not saying that the missions we do get aren't good, its just that they are rather far between.

    1. About 0-10€ per month. Usually 0. Sometimes, every 2 months or so i buy zen for 10€ and thats all. I dont need more.
    2. Is not my case, so i cant answer that.
    3. I spent money in my first months, but after the 3rd i stop wasting my money on this game. And since then , 1 year later i always enjoyed the game, until the past couple of months that i do what i can. Every day less and less, due to so many bugs and fails everywhere.
    4. NO. I dont need to spend mony on STO to enjoy it. In fact is the opposite. Using money in this game makes me feel i am throwing it away, since i am not really a rich person.
    5. A F2p is better than a sub always. Because meaning f2p doesnt mean less profit. The opposite. And the company behind the game is less worried about wasting resources in things like fixing bugs or make the ideas of the community a reality. This for the company behind. For the players, f2p is always better in the sense of they dont "have" to pay for playing. But it is worst because the general quality of the game decreases year after year.

Quite a lot in the past (subscriber for a year from 2010-2011, then LTS, tons of ships and costumes). Not much, if any, in the last two years or so. I believe the last thing I paid cash for was a the Vesta bundle when it first came out.

That's more due to my own financial situation than any sort of commentary on the game. It's much, much better than it used to be. It's also ridiculously easy for me to get ships and stuff for free, with 11 characters refining dil.

    1. Since I started playing near the end of January 2014... $20 back in April when they had the 15% bonus Zen.

    2. I have not spend much money, but I am thinking about buying a LTS when it goes on sale.

    3. n/a

    4. No. Perfectly happy with the free ships so far. The $20 I spent for 2,300 Zen is still in my account along with some other Zen that was exchanged from Dilithium.

    5. For myself, I prefer F2P since if I do not like the game, then the only thing I have wasted is my time.

The point of this thread was to see if I'm not alone. I read alot on the forums of people praising F2P and say they have never spent 1 dollor on sto. I am Not one of those people. I felt if anyone ever found out I had over 1000 dollors invested into a video game (Mainly my Family) they would throw me out of the house and have me comitted to a mental institution. Now that I know I'm not the only person who has invested so much into sto Its silly but, I kinda feel better.

    Sincerely, TY

Its not investing, its spending money on entertainment

    1.

I suddenly realize I'm one of the game's whales.

I'm not rich, honest, but this and coffee are my two biggest entertainment expenses.

I don't spend every month. But when I do, it's typically in $50 purchases.

    2.

Sure. I wish I could get more insight into the design process and content could be released more evenly but sure.

    3.

    N/A

    4.

Not really. I go long stretches without spending. I think you probably should go gold for one month. Anything else can be handled selling dilithium for C-Points. It strikes me as kinda wrong to NEVER spend. But I think maybe $10-15 dropped, period, could get you a satisfying game experience.

    5.

For this game the way it launched? Yes.

I think you have to be prepared to offer really premium service to justify a monthly fee, preferably premium service, loads of content, and everything available in game and without a cash shop. I'd probably consider as much as $25 for that. On a $15 a month game, I'd be willing to tolerate a cosmetic cash shop.

If you can't have live phone support, quarterly major updates, weekly patches/fixes, and an open world game with free exploration, you should be F2P, IMHO.

STO is many times better as a FTP game. If this game were still Sub-only it would have closed by now.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Whatever, it's all just, as someone said, entertainment money. I probably spent $1000 on STO, but I probably spent $1000 on beer in the same timeframe.

I do find it really hilarious and sad when people who spend tons of money on the game insist that they're "subsidizing" it somehow. Spend as much or as little as you want, but don't pretend there's a higher purpose to it.

Very true. People blow through entertainment money regularly but then make a big deal about it when they spend it on a game. I will just repost something I posted here a few months ago:
It really is a failure on how most people rationalize where they spend their money. I purchase 3 comic books a week for my children and spend $40.00 to $50.00 a month on them. My wife likes the Theater and so we try to go once a month: $80.00 to $150.00 per month for two tickets. I dropped $350.00 on a PS4 right before Christmas for the family, and another $250.00 on games - games that my children are already sick of playing. I can go on an on, like taking my family to the Movies once per month. Taking the family to a museum at least once per month, golfing in the summer 2-4 times per month.

We all spend hundreds to thousands per year on recreational activities - even if it is just gas driving the children out to see unusual things like State Parks and the like. $50.00 on a ship pack is a drop in the bucket if you are enjoying the game you are playing - especially when you can get it at a great discount, or free, simply by playing.
