this is for me, good, as far as keybinds go http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showpost.php?p=8289771&postcount=601

loading up a bunch of TRIBBLE on space bar=bad, having a variaty of binds to cover your TRIBBLE offensively and defensibly=good, and will go a long way toward making pvp less 'imbalanced', for you.

so you say it needs more binds and 1 keyboard macro to rule them all

the game needs a doff that reduces the global cd to all powers so when you a2b to be sure you have non stop all powers ready.

While macro's most certainly help, they are not necessary. What I do is I hotkey the left part of the tray with the most userd skills and cluster everything near WASD, so the game plays more like a space sim for me. The right part of the tray I use for skills which would be bad if you spammed them and use the mouse to click them (tac/eng/sci fleet, batteries, cloak ect).

My point is the default keyboard setup for sto is horribad and it took me rebinding almost everything.

The advantage of this over macro's is I can press the exact skill I need for a specific situation
The disadvantage is lag completely screws you over when you click 5 buttons in quick succession, and a mispress can be fatal, also you need to memorize your layout and which key corresponds to what tray position

Get a Naga mouse or the logitech like it... and never use a macro again. You'll have more fun in every MMO you play... not to mention you will beat marco kids about the head most of the time.

I had a naga but ended up never using it. I now use a razer taipan since it has buttons on both sides instead of having that overlycomplicated numpad

i got plentiful mouse buttons and all my macros are on them. why not both?

    This is my naga setup.

1-10 keys on mouse... 1-10 on my tray... you get so used the staandard 1-10 (1-12 in some games) that when you see something in that tray position in any new MMO you play that its just second nature to hit that key on your mouse.

    Second tray... I hold shift

    Third Tray... I hold Ctrl

In STO I use 11 and 12 to switch my power settings

    11 - Weapon
    Shift 11 - Shield
    Shift 12 - Engine
    12 - Aux

Setup like that I can instantly pop off any skill no worry about silly orders of activation or marco timings. I can change power settings instantly.

Far better then macros. I used to use plenty of macros and dance around my keyboard... after I got the naga I just started deleting them... until at some point I realized I didn't have anything macroed anymore.

The only game keybind I use anymore... is to activate weapons. I do have some builds iwth 4+ fire keys.. so I don't have to click on weapons.

i got rows 4-8 and execute whole row binds on them. skills can only activate so quickly be they from an individual key binded to them or from being in a row execute macro. 1-3 are set up for intuitive clicking though, as if i dont run macros. mainly to keep an eye on cooldowns.

1 row for cycling skills, 1 for a string of tac buffs, 1 pretty much just for TT, 1 for heals, and 1 for special offense or defense depending on the build. any of these skills keyed individually would be less useful to me, and just leave me a lot more buttons to keep track of, and there's a lot more then 12 total skills that i have placed in these rows anyway.

    It's escorts online.

Tried it through the weekend... and failed. Trying to replay the PvE missions was SO painful that I quit at lvl 12.

Will wait for next PvP update, if it ever comes out and try then again. But I think until it's possible to level up via PvP I'll never return to STO for long. And it's really irittating cause I love Star Trek and would love to play, hell, even spend real money in STO.

It hasn't been escort online for a long time now.

and yet it isn't escorts online since forever. In every game there are more sci, carriers, dreads, cruisers and romulans then escorts by a large margin.

Indeed, to me it never was escort online. Started PvP with a Defiant and... didn't go very well lol.
I think Tempest is going to be used more and more, can take on pretty much everything.

I'd say everyone should learn to play an escort, after you did you can pilot everything.

    Hi!

Flying an escort is hard work and a whole lot of practice!
I do know some ppl who are really good dogfighters, but
most escort players do suck (and therefore become vapers ;)
Not everybody has the time and the mood to train skills
for a game, but those who do are a pain in the a**.

    Greetz Siegfried

PS: I still suck as well :)

Well, it's really true, you have to spend a lot of time to understand all the dynamics under a good piloting skill and timing, so "newcomers" dont demoralize yourself and keep it up!

btw, if u suck siegfried, then the base level must be raised a lot eheh :P

LOL and this is why we seem to be running out of sci captains in PvP events lately.

Being a good sci/sci pilot or a good eng healer takes very different skills and styles then being a good escort pilot. What you learn in one , does not easily transfer onto the other.

If as a newcomer you find escorts dull, try some of the other options out there. Once you realize how much healing and cc contribute to the escorts ability to kill something you are on your way to seeing the teamsport in STO pvp.

For PvE go go escorts, but in PvP good escort pilots a good healer or sci/sci does not make.
