I do find it interested that so many focus on DPS only. Not that DPS is wrong, but it is not all there is. For example, lets say that you can get 30,000 DPS in a 5 min run of an ESTF. That is really good DPS. However, let's say that you can also go into the same ESTF, and do less DPS, but finish it in 3 mins.
In this case, is the higher DPS build still better, or the one that will let you kill the enemy faster?
I have mentioned in other threads before that I went into an ESTF and had the highest DPS, but only killed three enemies. I did it to prove to others with me that it was possible. In this case, I had the highest DPS, but was no help at all to the others. Others that had lower DPS did all the work.
Then, not too long ago, I went into the same ESTF, but with a different build. This time, I had DBB, and cannons. I had about average DPS, but killed more enemies.
The point here is that running a parser is only going to tell you what you can do over time. Sometimes, it is more than that.
If there is an enemy that cannot regenerate shields, then cannons can kill them quicker than beams, if the build is done correctly. Since a parser is going to measure the damage over time, then it counts the time weapons hit shields. With the delay between the time cannons fire, and refire, it can give enough time for shields to recharge. This means that when the cannons fire again, the shields take the brunt of the damage.
However, beams can offer sustained damage, and that means that the shields are harassed as soon as they start to come up. Therefore, when attacking ships with regenerating shields, beams are better.
Spike damage (cannons) vs. sustained damage (beams) is not always the best way to look at it. If you can use a cannon skill, and beam skill, then you will find that the best combination is spike damage, and sustained damage. The combination is the better solution.
Here is a suggestion:
Give up the parser for a little bit. Run an all beam build, and time how long it takes to run the mission, and how many enemies you kill by yourself.
Then, run a combination of DBBs, and DHCs, with both FAW, and cannon rapid fire. Then, time how long it takes to finish the mission, and count how many more enemies you can kill.
With a ship that can run both beam and cannon skills, the ultimate question will be: Kill the enemy faster, or get higher DPS?
