Lots of different play styles! Excellent, guys!

Another question: Do you use autofire? Or are you a manual activation person?

I use autofire on my DHCs/turrets/KCB, but trigger BO manually. This allows me to activate and hold the power until I'm on target and (hopefully) have a clear shot against their (again hopefully) bare hull. :)

Note, also, that I've dropped all powers from my space bar and use it *just* to trigger weapons (i.e. the BO from above). Everything else - my EPtX cycle, my A2B/A2D cycle, TI and Fleet Support - all tied to WASD so they activate automatically as I maneuver.

One more question: Do you run TT manually? Using A2B or TT doffs for CD reduction? Or do you run 2x copies and put them in a keybind?

I do the latter when running without A2B, but use a single copy - and activate it manually, as necessary - when running A2B.

I use WASD for directional controls.

I use my right mouse button to activate my camera when I need to change my view.

I have a Logitech G600 (Its like a Razer Naga, just built better and less expensive ) which I have set to numbers 1-0, and 2 floating buttons that usually end up as pet attack and pet recall (I am usually in some sort of flight deck something)

Things like autofire and such are all very ship dependent. I'm always trying different things, but I mostly fly dedicated healer in PvP. I can get away with my beams on auto fire most of the time, I can ignore feedback pulses and Aceton Assimilators I rarely hit more than 2 or 3 times before my KCB takes it out or I'm out of range of it. If I'm in an escort... it depends on how many extra buttons I have going on :P

Edit: I always double cover TT, thru A2B, conn officer doffs, or 2 copies. Too many people forget to heal others with tac team...
I once again match my character. Behold the power of PINK!

    /bind space "+TrayExecByTray 9 0 $$ +TrayExecByTray 9 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 9 2 $$ +TrayExecByTray 9 3 $$ GenSendMessage HUD_Root FireXXX $$ +power_exec Distribute_Shields"

TRIBBLE depends on the boat/loadout/what I want firing...

    90 & 91 tend to be EPtX/EPtY with 92 & 93 empty...or for single EPtX/no EPtX, then all four are empty. For an AtB boat, it's 90 EPtX 91 AtB 92 EPtY 93 AtB.

    That's my only multiple bind.

I dont do much WASD i usually set my ship on Follow and spam BFaW and the likes

Id like to do easy dmg with a few spacebar buttons, despite timing which really isnt needed on the build im using.

I use a similar bind, but I put my CRF in there. I put TT in tray 6 and bind it to C with all of my shield heals, and it also sets my power to defense preset.

Frankly, for non-escort play it probably doesn't matter much. But when you're trying to line-up cannons or a BO shot, the efficiency and responsiveness of your "steering" mechanism may make all the difference.

So, how do you steer *your* ship in STO PvP play? And while your at it, tell us how you handle other stuff, like throttle control and powers activation.

Note: I use the WASD keys with my left hand and the number keys pad to activate powers with my right. Not the most efficient solution, and it shows: I suck! :P

    RCK

WASD to steer the ship (W nose down, A turn left, S nose up, D turn right, combinations of these allow to bank and go up or down, e.g. spiral), LMB to move camera around, sometimes double mouse to steer. Tray powers assigned to handy keys for left hand (number keys and SHIFT+x, ALT+x and a few others around left hand area, and also mwheel up/down, and MB4), a few less-used things on the Numpad for right hand to flick over and hit. Throttle as standard (left hand Q, E, R, SHIFT+R).

As a result of playing STO for a while, I now have a good sense of being able to steer the ship consistently in its own orientation with WASD while independently moving camera for view.

I think the control system for space is excellent, best of any space game by far, easy to do with m/k, very powerful.

Follow target camera + WASD + a keybing on rshift to force the camera if necessary
numpad and function key for activate abilities..

It work good for me, however with the s9 when flying my escorts, the camera shake too much and it's orrible (and yes, I have disabled camera shaking).

I am an old school DOS keyboard driver (damn space quest) and I can never get used to WASD. so i have a very strange set up for most games

I remapped flight directions to the arrow keys.
Power bar 1-10 and manual redistribute shields is on the num pad
Targeting is handled via the home/end row or manually selecting with mouse
CTRL power bar is handled via side mouse buttons razer Naga
ALT power bar is pinkie on alt and thumb or index to fire num pad. (I know stretch)
Throttle is mouse wheel up and down
    Fire all beams Right click
    Fire torps wheel click

    I use these:

Belkin n52te and Logitech Marble Mouse or
sometimes this Steelseries Merc and Razer Naga Molten

I was an everquest (navigation was the num pad) player so never really got used to WASD, so I drive with the mouse. The n52te can be flipped on the fly to 3 different configurations where I do have WAD capability, but usually my powers are tied to the buttons as well as throttle control on the wheel.

The Merc has dedicated action keys that mimic WASD, use this when playing MWO, and there are so many buttons on the Naga, usually used for powers.

Also have Logitech G-13 but its not as comfortable and as responsive as the Belkin n52te.

For escorts and fast ships, the WASD keys primarily.

For anything else with a turn rate of 10 or less, I'm starting to use my gaming joystick (for some reason, it avoids the problems with holding down the Alt key and using the numped...).

Another Topic: How are people laying out their buff activations? I keep my most common ones in Tray 0 and just use the numpad to activate them. However, I have so many that I sometimes have to overflow into Tray 1, and that means a ctrl+keypress combo, which is not always convenient when fighting an escort in a turn battle. :(

Well, mine stems back to when I first started playing, for my main, tray 0 slots 1 to 7 are weapons, slot 10 is a weapon, because back then I was spamming those buttons to fire them, 8 and 9 are my two most needed skills (RSF and Evasives respectively). Tray 1 slots 1 and 2 are primary tactical (FAW, APX) Slot 3 is EPSPT (because of flow), 4 and 5 are EPtX, 6 is BFI, 7 is NI, 8 varies by build in it's current form 8 is A2D, 9 and 10 are boff team skills. for tray 2, slot 1 is HE, slot 2 is misc, slot 3 serves the same role as tray 1 slot 8, in this case A2D, 4 again varies by role, in this case DEM but is sometimes EWP depending upon build, 5 is MW, 6 is TSS, 7 is the fleet skill, 8 is RSP, 9 is the warp core capacitor, 10 is Rom Rep. For tray 3, 1 and 4 are A2D, 2 and 3 are EPtX (these four are on the space bar), 5 to 8 are cruiser commands, 9 is misc, 10 is Nuke rep.

Don't know if one would call is an organised system but it works for me.

    Scimitar Barbie
    Angry Badger
    Wasd: move
Mouse wheel: throttle and click for full impulse
Space bar: fire, epte1, eptw1 atd1 launch drone ships. (razor keyboard macros to double tap while held( no distro as it delays fire cycles and other abilities.)
    Q: Apo3
    E:Apb1 or BO2
    R: evasive
    F: brace
    C: ram
    Shift: push to talk
    1-4: tac captian abilities
Then I have a RAT 7 MMO mouse with:
D-pad: target team mate1-4 click to self target.
    Kill now button: dem2 crf2 tb2
All other buttons: tt1x2 ,he1 ,cloak ,target, quantum absorption, all on there own little buttons.
Most people think its weird having aux to bat and damp and weirder still that one is bound and the other isn't but it works for me. The aim is to keep every thing close to the wasd cluster or on quick access mouse buttons so I never lose any control over my scimitar.

Cam is set to chase as scimitar is perfect speed to be fast and nippy without flipping the camera out.

    Left hand:
    WASD: Steering
    1-5: Captain abilities
    F1-F4: Teammates

    Right hand:
    6-9: Captain abilities
Insert-PgDown: Heals and defensive abilities (mostly on Sci ships)
    Numpad 1-6: Offensive abilities
    Mouse wheel: Throttle

After two weeks, I did not even need to look at the keyboard.

Steering? What is this thing you call steering? Does this have to do with rearing bulls?

I just put the throttle at full and keep the W + A buttons held down; eventually the tub that I fly will loop around the combat and bring me back into range to heal things. :P

Is anybody actually mousing around their tray clicking stuff in combat?

Ooh, ooh, me! I click practically everything on my power tray! I've organized my power tray so that all of the like abilities (shield-healing / hull-healing, on same system cooldown) are grouped together for quick identification. Pretty much the only exceptions to that are that my left hand will occasionally hit the 1 - 4 number keys, where I've slotted my Team abilities.

You guys should try it sometimes! No keybinds is fun! Lots of mousing and clicking and general mayhem when under fire!

WASD steers, (while also distributing shields and using every skill set in tray 10) Razor Naga puts 12 buttons on my thumb (12 new commands with 'alt' 12 more with shift, 12 more with ctrl for 48 possible commands... even more with 2 modifiers at once...) - E and Q toggle throttle. Also I use an ergo keyboard because I find the split in the middle lets me hit TGB easily witout YHN getting in my way. every key on the left side of my keyboard is bound to at least one thing (except the windows button I pried off) and the right side buttons are bound to non combat TRIBBLE like map, character screen etc.

And yes, I do need that many binds. I bind everything from targetting teamates to targetting them and sending shield heals in one click, or targetting them and sending hull, my weapon power setings are bound. I have a special button for binding certain priority targets so I can catch them decloaking, or moniter their alpha's etc. (/bind z target Scimitar Barbie). I have a bind that will use epte, evasive, ramming speed, brace for impact, and set power to engines all at once assuming the powers are not on cd, they all fire off with one command, consequently that command is ctrl + mouse wheel up.

    Victory is Keybinding.

Free camera + WASD mostly, but sometimes I also use mouse for manuvering. Right press manuvering (I`m not using mouse very often anymore), right drag or left drag look around. Throttle deafult, except R for full impulse.

Basic spacebar keybind (fireAll+distribute shields), autofire disabeld on tac, sci turned on.
I`m activating all of my powers by either clicking on them or combined keyboard + mouse (G600).

Autofire is disabled on my tac`s just beacause of SS, so I can stop firing quickly (dont wanna killa a team mate afterall :D. On sci doesn`t matter pretty much (mines, torps and DBB or SB)

    WASDQE for steering and throttle.

Right hand on my mouse. Clicking abilities on my tray and adjusting the camera.

No keybinds on either of my bugs ships, A2B boat, nor healer. Only bind I have is a redistribute shields for my Sci ship with no TT.

I think I'm one of the few to do it so old fashioned but it works great for me.

I pretty much do the same, defaults for all movement w/free camera that I use mouse to pan/zoom with. I haven't even bothered to bind distribute shields, I use mouse to click the facing I want or usually the center.

I'll admit I've been tempted to change the throttle defaults from 1/4 intervals.

You have a button to facilitate target-keybinding? What's the command for that? I've been trying to figure it out for a while now (ex. when I have a target selected and press said button, it will automatically create a "/bind Z target name" keybind for my selected enemy). I thought so far it's not even possible.

I move around with the mouse (double button) and Q/E/R for throttle control! It's a hold over from when I first started playing STO and I got used to it fast, as opposed to WASD. I'm trying to use WASD here and there, but I just find it really strange.

Other than that I have a couple of binds set up (mouse buttons 4&5), but most abilities are activated by 1-6, or Ctrl+ 1-6, or Shift+1-6, except rarely used abilities (Tac Fleet, etc), that are on the higher numbers.

Maybe not best practise, but works for me...
