Indeed. If you are communicating vocally, then say the actual phrase.

Oh how I wish I could rant about that without derailing this thread... As military, I have come home to see people with no respect for anything in their day to day lives, things that they would not have if not for us sacrificing our lives for them. There are so many times I wish we could temporarily declare Martial Law, maybe for a month or so. People will never learn to respect what we give them unless we take it away for a while. Children are easy enough to teach, but most adults are nothing short of incorrigible.

To do that, you need the ability to write reports, and the ability for clear communication over the radio.

That reminds me of when I was in Russia, and ambushed by missionaries from Amerika. Being from Amerika, not even one of them spoke Russian, so I was able to get rid of them by pretending that I don't know any English at all...and it worked quite well...:D

Reminds me of the time I considered getting rid of some Gideons by claiming to be Muslim. (Note: I'm a Methodist.)

Now you reminded me of that joke (don't know if it works in English) in which Jehova's witnesses ring the bell. The guy asks: "Who is it?".
    They reply: "Jehovah's witness".
"You must have the wrong house. I saw nothing!!" - He says.

I hear people saying it, let alone writing it!

Tell me, why on earth will someone who is laughing say that he/she is laughing? Moreover, we speak in our own language, lol is not in our language!

    Oh well...

Yeah, I've always felt as if it was... how do I put this nicely... stupid to say out loud, as in verbally announce "lol" or "omg". I do not say "OMG" unless I'm chatting or texting, but I will say "oh my god".

Oh hey, you know all the cool kids are saying "YOLO" these days

I'd use the term 'cool' lightly...

I had no idea. that would be SSVUV in my language eheheh
I suppose language may one day develop to a point in which most of the sentence will not contain specific words. We already experience that in writing. That is not a major issue if all participants in said communication are aware of the meaning. But it's terrible when they don't.

It's important to have proper punctuation. I'm not anal about grammar to be honest... but, at the least... is it too much trouble to put a comma in the right place?

I just saw the link ...

    The dangling particle was hilarious!
Hopefully I'll come back from my break; this break is fun; I play intellectual games.

    I hope STO get's better ...

Yes, exactly. I see students write their papers and use acronyms from the weekly lesson or whatever and not explain what that means. So as a reader you hit that acronym and are just completely ?????? Just because the writer knows doesn't mean the reader does.

I made up that joke at least a few years ago. Shared it back then with a mutual Doctor Who fan. They liked it too.

As a punster, I like messing with my native language. One response I've had is: "Why do you abuse English so much? What has it ever done to you?" And when I say, "But I couldn't resist", the response is: "What do you mean you couldn't resist? You didn't even try."

Actually, I consider puns (or at least the non-obvious ones) a demonstration of knowledge of a language. You have to understand a language well to take advantage of its ambiguities like that.

I guess. I've also introduced myself to a friend of a friend: "Hi, I'm the friendly neighborhood punster" and the reply was: "Oh, I know you. You're eeevil."

Borg drone #1: "You got assimilated fast."
    Borg drone #2: "I couldn't resist."

I suppose this is helpful on the long run. The more we become ininteligible more people will be able to work in finding out what we wrote some 5000 years from now.

The how we communicate with each other continues to change as society changes. So naturally it will change in the future. lets hope for a smart change though.
