Star Trek: The Cage

centersolacecentersolace Member Posts: 11,178 Arc User
It's almost the 50th anniversary of The Cage, the pilot episode of Star Trek, and the one that started all of this. It wouldn't be right to miss out on such an important milestone for this franchise, so let's have some ideas for how we should celebrate!

The command yellow uniforms kinda look the same besides the collar. Probably would only get the female officer jackets.

Honestly, I've always kinda wanted one of those laser pistols; it takes second place to the WoK phaser though.

I vote for a TOS ship meet up somewhere as a commemoration, maybe taking over a ESD instance.

Or maybe re-creating the episode in the Foundry?

Would like to have the ship parts that The Cage Enterprise used for my TOS Constitution. Bigger bridge module, bigger deflector dish, different bussards and nacelle end caps. Or maybe just the phaser pistol. Always liked that one.

You know, some items, whether free or Zenbased would be great. Many I'd like were mentioned above, like #1's hairstyle, the pilot uniforms, etc. I think it would be great to have the pilot enterprise bridge too.

Hmmm... honestly I'd buy a Pilot Episode bundle. But I think the best thing would be, if possible, to have an event or a new short mission arc involving Talos IV. Perhaps it could be tied in with the Undine, possibly. And given the Talosians' advanced tech, perhaps we could even meet an extremely old Christopher Pike, with a young Talosian facade...

The idea of a Talosian mission would be awesome and some art assets from that episode would be brilliant! not to mention a 50th anniversary of Star Trek would be and should be a huge event!

Definitely want to see that famous Orion outfit in game.
In fact, we could use some canon Orion outfits period as there isn't a single one for females in the game.

I like the idea of adding some cannon TOS outfits. Orion outfit for KDF, gray jackets for Fed, and Talosian robes & old style laser pistols for all.

The only problem I see with this is that there were only two distinct rank sleeve insignias seen on screen in TOS whenever this uniform was on screen. We never saw anybody above Captain wearing them and pretty much everybody between Lieutenant and Captain wore the same insignia and CPO's had an insignia. So Admiral's would have the same insignia as everybody else if this were added somehow. That's my only pet peave. Like the idea of anything from that era otherwise.

The Ranks from 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' modified that slightly, adding an extra slide for higher ranks.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

This is the second crew I created for STO back in 2010. My homage to Majel Barrett-Roddenberry. Captain Majel Leigh Hudec. In command of the starship USS Lincoln. Other Captain's call her M.L. Or, simply, Mel. I used to think the field jackets worn in that pilot were a shade of light blue. But the HD screencaps I've recently viewed suggest the jackets to be a metallic grey shade. The branch colors were yellow, blue and peach. No red yet. I can't find a good shade of peach in the palette. So picked something close.

I also made my version of The Keeper from Talos IV.

I like the idea of the laser pistol and the goggles. I thought of something else fun. Unlocking a TOS version of Engineering's phaser turret fabrication skill:

    thecagehd1171.jpg

This would be the weapon platform spawned on the ground map. I recall it functioned with power transferred directly from the orbiting Enterprise. Any suggestions for its stats for our game?

That would be fun! Perhaps it could work like the antiproton turrets. The current phaser turrets work like machine guns.

Funny to find this thread now. "The Cage", I think is one of the most iconic episodes of TOS and one if my favorites. After watching it again I got to thinking how I could bring the Talosians back in the foundry.

Shameless plug I admit it. :P

I agree completely we need some developer recognition of this milestone, either through costumes, laser pistols, SOMETHING.

    From Memory Alpha:
The episode's first draft script had an opening scene in the hangar bay where Captain April, whose character at this stage was a tad older than Captain Pike was later written, is inspecting new crew members. He remarks disapprovingly to the doctor, at one point, about the young age of some of these officers. "Something," Roddenberry later wrote in a memo, "that Jim Kirk, the boy wonder of the Academy, never would have done." In this same scene, April sees a number of badly-wounded crewmen off the ship, onto a space shuttle or taxi from the Human colony of Antares. Among these departing officers is an uninjured former navigator named Crowley who April is sending back in disgrace, because he fired on friendly aliens. The officer argues that they were monstrous in appearance and asks how he could have known that they were intelligent enough to have weapons. These protests are met by a stern but subdued dismissal from the captain, who quietly orders, "Get off my ship, mister." (The Making of Star Trek; The Star Trek Compendium, 4th ed., pp. 11-12)

I'll tell you what I'd like.

I'd like an episode set before TOS with Robert April (Pike's predecessor aboard the 1701) and Number One (voiced by the actress who does the computer voice in STO).

Have them wear the uniforms from The Cage and the uniform Garth of Izar (and a couple of other characters wore) as a dress uniform Or Paramount approving, the Kelvin uniforms from Star Trek 2009 which should technically be the post-Enterprise/pre-TOS uniforms in both timelines..

The original captain of the 1701, Robert April.

Heck, April even preceded Pike in the J.J.-verse in the Into Darkness prequel comics.

Here's what we can piece together about April:

He was the first captain of the 1701. Had a wife named Sarah (possible last name Poole) who had served with him as ship's Doctor. He might be British although he wasn't in most sources.

Kirk's father, George, may have served with him as XO (presumably after serving with Richard Robau on the Kelvin and possibly after a stint on Tarsus IV where Governor Kodos performed his executions). Pike also may have been his first officer.

Number One served for awhile as April's helmsman according to recent sources.

I think it was implied that there might have been some aliens serving aboard although obviously no Vulcans. A Caitian, Trill, Andorian, or Denobulan would all work.

Also... The TOS sets might need a slight recolor to get the red out if they were used for a mission like this.
