Singapore connection. The hop there is timing out, thus net outage is occurring.
Web browsing uses a different route.
The intermediate hop not responding isn't necessarily a problem; that device may be configured to not respond to ICMP. The important thing is the destination; if you can get that to respond, you should be fine.
Web browsing wouldn't take an alternate route, normally; routing is application-agnostic unless you're hitting load-balancers or something like that.

I'm also using optus net from Brisbane and I'm still having issues trying to connect. The launcher is slow to progress to the point that I can "Engage" the game. Only then does the patching bar say that it is unable to connect to account server.
I'm using Optusnet too. Everything else is working for me. It's just STO that keep stalling or crashing out on me.
I'm also having trouble logging into Star Wars the Old Republic. Considering I haven't made any changes to my system overnight. I'm inclined to believe that Optus screwed up. Again.
Sooo...can't log in...AGAIN...anyone else with problems at the moment?
Yup. Launcher updater took about 10 attempts to connect, and now the launcher is sitting at the "Loading, please wait" that comes before the username/password prompt, and has been for about 2 minutes now.
This is getting really tiresome.
EDIT: Just did a NETSTAT. Why the hell is it sending me to the German servers? (at least I presume that's what de.startrekonline.com is)
Let me guess.. You finally beat that hamster to death with your Ferengi whip?
East Coast Sever Farm Network is down? Login Server Crash? Or is this a serious Warp Core breach?
At first it was frozen lag then would update for a second.. then start doing the herky jerky again. (Server not responding 6 times in a row for over 60s each)

Yes; the reasons are listed throughout my many posts in this thread
TL;DR: Regional ISP issue that was out of our control.

I having the same problem too...:(
stostatus.com has been broken for over a year. It invariably find the server down 100% of the time.
I suppose we don't always see eye-to-eye on everything, but you went above and beyond the call of duty, trying to help us out. Kudos or that!
And yes, it's working again!

I think 21th Century Internet technology can handle a little rain. :P
You'd be surprised. Most of the wide-area connections out there are using the same basic telco technology that's been in use for decades.

Rather annoying.
