I found a workaround for missing/corrupted textures

I'm been having this issue along with lots of other people; after a long period of playtime textures will be slow to load, sometimes not load, and particle effects will be blocky. Typically the only way to fix it is to close and restart the client.

I found that if you go into the graphics options, under troubleshooting, and set the memory allocation to 128 MBs the problem will shortly resolve itself, no need to restart.

After it clears up I set it back to auto or 1024+ and I'm good for a few more hours until the problem returns.

Not a solution, but much better than having to completely restart the game.

    What may work for one, may not necessarily for another. If you include your graphics card details in your post other players with the same card may benefit from your workaround,

    Interesting.

    A long standing workaround, whilst avoiding a full restart, has been to log off and back in; although that tends to produce diminishing returns in subsequent repeats.

    I wonder if you could indicate how long you get resumed play, using that method. A 'few more hours' is far better than I'd get (typically 30mins-1hr best case & if undertaken on very first onset of condition; 5-10mins worst case) but you may have been less affected to being with.

    Should others also be able to benefit from this, then it would be useful to baseline the difference in performance between both approaches, whilst on a single consistent hardware configuration.



    In case anyone is wondering where the very large original thread on this topic has gone, it has been b̶u̶r̶i̶e̶d̶ intelligently refiled under Windows and General: PC, Network and other technical issues. This despite being demonstrably cross-platform in nature.

    I usually don't get hit with the problem initially unless I've been playing for like 4-5 hours. Then I do this trick and usually I'm good for another 2-3 or so. But yeah, I think I have to agree, there are diminishing returns with each "reset".

    I've never tried logging out and back in. I know going to the character select screen doesn't work, as when I've tried that all I see is a giant blob of blocky light around my character.

    Doesn't that basically just reduce the all the textures, very much what the system will do automatically when you set video memory to 128 MBs?

    If I read it right, it creates a treshold at which the client is forced to unload its textures. Might be wrong, though.

    The two tex_memory commands likely do that. /reduce_mip 1 and /worldTexLODLevel 2 will likely lower texture quality, which in turn uses less memory, but you can do that in the settings.

    I might try using the tex_memory commands, see if that helps.

    So...I have the problem on multiple machines

    32bit Windows XP
    32bit Windows 7

    AMD Phenom II Black Quad Core
    Intel i7 Quad Core

    Nvidia and Radeon Graphics Cards Various Configurations


    I don't have a problem on AMD Six core with Windows 8 64 bit

    I updated the Windows XP 32bit to Windows 7 64-bit on my Athlon Phenom with Radeon HD 6800 Video and the problem seems to have gone away.

    I realize that the problem may come back...but I've been bug free with perfect textures on highest quality for a few hours now....while before the problem would arise after about 20-30 minutes. I could restart the client with the aforementioned diminishing returns.... but 64 bit seems to have done the trick.

    I'm going to upgrade the rest of my systems to 64 bit and will let everyone know my findings.

    So far I am very hopeful.

    I have had both the color blocks and space going to all white also. Just trying different things, in video settings under Troubleshooting I changed Video Memory Limit from Auto to 1024+ MB, and haven't had it happen again in the last 2-3 days except once when I was in the shipyard. If it didn't fix it, it certainly made it better than it was. Might be something else to try for some.

    AMD Athlon II x4 645 Processor 3.10 Ghz
    ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024MB

    Has anyone noticed if there seems to be a relationship between this problem and how many sectors of space you have moved around in before this problem appears?
